Last Saturday I watched 9th episode for the first time with managing to avoid all spoilers and had my watch not influenced by other’s opinions (which I am grateful for). I finished it with excitement but weird aftertaste soured it and left me thinking what I think know. I quite enjoyed seeing everyone slowly get together and fix circus and Gangle having mixed feelings for Jax.

Sadly, what I never expected, I didn’t enjoy Kinger here. First, he told everyone information about brain skans which felt like show off-handedly throwing us lore rather than characters realisation cast came to. Second, Kinger comforting Pomni felt weird? Like we are back in 3d episode where they were in exact same situation. Maybe it was supposed to be a sweet call back but it just didn’t feel that genuine. A plot device to solve Pomni and was too plain.

What I liked even less was Jax. I am of people who enjoyed this character previously and seeing more of Jax. But even for me it felt wrong. The episode was teased as some sort of thriller with deep psychological exploration but that was not that. The door sequence was completely unnecessary and just took place of more important stuff. If the episode was just that without significant active Jax involvement , all we needed was jump through memories and last talk. Another thing about teasing, the backstory did not deliver. With how Jax acted one would think something truly horrible happened and then it was just that? Sure verbal abuse is bad and mother’s maybe death traumatising but it felt underwhelming. First, it was a self defence and accident at worst. Second, show quickly dismisses it with Ribbit saying that she probably survived. Show doesn’t allow Jax to commit something truly worthy of being this scared to return to the real world. Third, how does it even connects to “it is not real” gimmick . One thing if Jax was just pretending to be someone he is not to hide insecurities but idk, the change was to drastic and doesn’t explain why he would think nothing was real. Idk how to explain. Also, we had Ragatha who was abused in home and Zooble with gender dissforia and none of them turned nearly as bad as Jax. I wish Goose did more with Jax. Recently listened to “Our word” from “36 questions” andx it feels like a much better backstory which also would fit gender identity much better.

Next, Pomni not checking on Jax undermines her character progression and message of the show. It was all about connection and “telling someone they are not loved is the worst thing you can do to someone” so why wouldn’t she check on Jax? It goes against her character and what we saw before. We can’t even chuck it to being post torture thing because Pomni was caring about Jax mid torture and it doesn’t make sense to not now.

Another thing, Jax abstraction, sidelines everyone else and all possible plot. We had something going on and the cut to abstraction. Also, after so much investment into Jax the abstraction doesn’t feel just bitter sweet, it feels like we didn’t get what we deserved. And also undermines stuff about being connected. Cast straight up allowed Jax to kill Jaxself.

I absolutely hate Caine popping back into existence. It absolutely undermines 8 episode,probably takes all gilt of him (blue AI?) gives us unnecessary scenes and speed runs redemption. I would have wanted his return only if Circus couldn’t function without Caine but others did great just like that.

And the worst offender- bad pacing, unnecessary scenes and story about people was only about one person and AI. I wanted everyone to work on circus and just grapple with new reality. I wanted Pomni to talk with Zooble about gun adventure, Ragatha apologise to Gangle for trying to “fix” her. I wanted the show about connections between about connections. Is it too much to ask?

Quick rewriting of what I wanted to see: The plot revolves around fixing circus, Jax separates further from everyone. Pomni goes to check on Jax who tries to abstract. She is the first one to break the cycle of indifference and saves Jax (yay!). Everyone fixes Circus with more talks. Kinger says he found something- Caine’s remains and they bring him back (as a red ball). Ballcaine starts to project real life information and everyone understands that he feels guilty. They decide to teach Ballcaine what being human means cue ending montage and credits where we see everything from his perspective. That’s all. Nothing big but satisfying

In Ukraine in recent years theatre became quite popular. Usually “screenings” are fully booked and halls are full. Tickets being relatively affordable is also a huge reason for it’s popularity
