How to block out sound

I live with my grandparent who is getting groomed by someone in our home country. Yes he is sharp and alert but he has always sadly bent over backwards for people of a lower caste who are not related

So every morning this guy phones around 6.30am asking for money or giving an update on small tasks he has been given(which also relate to giving away money to poor people). Then the calls come one after the other for several hours every half hour. And that disturbance causes me a huge headache and mind fog all day

I have so far turned the volume down of the phone. Don't know what's next. I don't want to go too far as my grandad is sharp and may well ask someone to check and turn it up again

Did your community send money back

Mine does and did. Getting less common. They spent decades of their life telling their kids to sacrifice and later you find out they were sending hundreds of pounds a month for a big house, lavish living and waste

there was never enough money to eat at school or buy souvenirs on school trips at the museum. I went hungry thinking I was helping my parents

This thing has followed me round all my life. Now my grandad is old and I'm living here partially because I can find nowhere else and also because my grandma asked me to for him as she now can't walk .

He gets calls every morning from a man in India who does a bit of small chit chat and essentially just wants money. And I can hear him now asking for 1 lac(£1000). These phone calls happen at 6-8am in the morning waking me up and are a trigger for me tbh

How long do you think this will last? And how are you coping in the short term

From personal experience and the last recession was when I was in high school, I'm forecasting 18 months+

I've got a good record and always walked into roles. So currently working part time in a warehouse although it's incredibly strenuous, meaning my other part time job I've had for several years is getting dragged down too in terms of earnings.

I can't see another way in the short term.

How are others seeing this through?

How on earth are analyses not mentioning the elephant in the room which is Gaza

This is the second article I read today in the Guardian (other from John Harris) asking how on earth did he lose..

Gaza is not a byword. It's not a side thing. It is a huge thing. Our PM approved more weapons exports licences to Israel than the Tories. 20k kids were killed including 1000 babies. And he went through stages of saying it was ok to cut off all water to Gaza, refusing to back calls for a ceasefire.

He also arrested what we might call vandals and is still trying to prosecute them for terrorism for objecting to killing.

Starmer shook hands with a war criminal wanted by the ICC on the steps of Downing Street

It doesn't matter whether we call it a genocide or a bloodbath or massacre...

Why do I feel it's so important in getting him out of power? It's the optics. The public didn't understand his fixation with resisting calls for sanctions and an end to military flights on behalf of Israel during the 2 years(more than 600 flights). It didn't matter if people were pro Gaza or Israel. It stood out as odd. As did his attempt to then get Israeli football hooligans (some of them accused of being involved in the Israeli military) allowed in the country

He picked the wrong fight. His team is operating like it's 97. The public are better informed and will not be swayed by the Sun newspaper so much

edit- why is Gaza so important? imo because it raises deep questions of democracy and accountability in our politics. if they're spending so much energy defending this, why are they not spending so much time doing the actual job and so bothered about other things and misrepresenting events

My boss was Jeff

Was on a plane this week watching this after several years and reminded me...

I used to work for a company where my boss was basically like Jeff. He was cool, calm, collected, looked like a ginger version of Jeff. I think about the guy every day. He was so comfortable in his own skin that he could talk about any subject. He was also a lawyer by qualification and had a solid mind that could interrogate any subject and grasp ideas quick .And he could remember the exact details of obscure sitcoms from 15 years ago. I'm a Muslim and he's a white guy but we had so many conversations on politics and religion and ofc work. I'm not sure I'll meet another like him . The more I knew him the more I respected him. Watching this program brought back good memories and sad ones that I don't see him anymore

Would you move elsewhere

Born in the UK up North. Ever since the international students wave and the economy drying up together, my opportunities are limited. I don't have many qualifications but could still do better than local talent. I'm wasting years being dry through recessions. Going to interviews where I'm sure if I was a white girl with no experience they would train me. As an Asian with experience getting few bites. This area has had Asians for 70 years now. How many more years are we second class citizens

Boris Johnson has totally fkd up the market

Happy to be proven wrong but the amount of Boriswave people working their way through the system before they go home is absolutely insane.

International students were hoodwinked into thinking we needed lots of grads, and cheap labour if they didn't quite hit the mark. And then we had dependants as well as those attached to carers.

Then the rules changed.

At this moment I'm seeing so many posts asking whether they should study in x place in the arse end of nowhere that usually sees foreigners when they're getting off the boat and heading as far away as possible from where they landed. These are places that do not need more applications for jobs and wth is Poole university. I mean you couldn't make it up.

Ofc I feel sorry for these kids being duped but this is crazy even after rule changes people think it's a way out, till they are stacking shelves on a night shift 3 years from now contemplating how much money they are losing.

And I also feel sorry for me. I'm born here with a foreign name and my family has been here nearly 70 years. The amount of people needing sponsorship and not being clear and ticking the right box on applications is crazy. Some are weeded out early and some think the recruiter will make an exception at the end when they realise what a fantastic candidate they have (that's just wasted everyone's time...ooh just one small problem btw). Most companies cannot increase their headcount budget nor do they want the faff of paperwork. It doesn't matter how well you speak

It's all just white noise as they say. It's time to stop this debacle and use international students for genuine cultural exchange programs where they know they will not be working or those who are genuinely gifted and can contribute in r and d and very in demand industries

The current riots

I have to say, I think Farage has now morphed into the extreme right with a very culture war mentality willing to use violence. Previously he was on the sidelines and easy to ignore and was more about a little England village mentality. Jenrick has always been one of his core supporters and did a good disappearing act with the Southport riots after fanning the flames

I struggle to understand though why no one involved in encouraging violence and chaos has been arrested including Farage and Lennon.

We have seen Starmer arrest the Palestine Action protestors including GPs , vicars, pensioners , blind people and those people didn't use violence and wanted an end to it in fact.

This all feels dystopian to me.

My grandad is getting groomed

We are Indian and been in the country for 3 generations. My grandad and many others used to send money home. Over time that morphed into the village..now most people are well off and don't ask for money. Except one guy.

He's self made a role for himself to become an unofficial admin for my grandad to distribute charitable funds. basically he takes money round. this is not his official job. he is a street seller. He will get money for that and he takes it round personally. And he has invented or exaggerated numerous personal tragedies over the last couple of months including some kind of miscarriage or labour issue with his daughter needing hospital funds(already provided free for Indian citizens in govt hospitals), a motorcycle accident for which he got a car and a fridge.

I think it also allows him to build a network, be a guy who gives money and a guy through whom money is got over there. I am sure most of the recipients nowadays are well and not in need. And it allows him to keep milking for funds and keep the wheels lubricated.

He also phones a lot. And is quite rude although my grandad doesn't acknowledge that. For my grandad to make the 7 metre journey from bathroom to phone takes several minutes. You get the gist. When I say phones a lot he phones non stop, consecutively till he gets an answer. And if one of the other people in the family say he is coming and will be a few minutes, he slams the phone down . And then starts again half an hour later

For me, I'm not bothered about the money but I'm living here as support and these calls start at 06:55 ruining my sleep and giving me a headache. And the calls last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. It takes me an hour to get back to sleep and I might get 20 mins or half an hour before the next call and so on till about 11.

In the past these calls can happen in the afternoon. Sometimes he's keen for several days and then stops

I did turn the phone off today temporarily so I could sleep and my grandad realised and put it back in. He is house bound (although he does sneak off very slowly on a four leg stick to give money to the agent) and my grandmother is bed bound. I don't know if she is awoken but basically she's very ill. These calls reverberate around the house as there are two phones and it's a small house.

I'm thinking of packing my bags and leaving. I can't cope with sleep deprivation

Austerity has wrecked our country

It's so visible everywhere. Closed libraries, underfunded libraries, closed randomly for staffing issues, other libraries overwhelmed with people who have social and economic issues and need professional help. Libraries that lack basic software for job searchers. Closed during working hours.

Police who've lost their best staff to enforced voluntary redundancy.

Roads full because public transport doesn't work. Roads jammed because those same roads need maintenance

it's just everywhere but we don't seem to get to the crux of the issue that it was political

Who pays in this situation

This is an actual scenario

Customer applies for a tourism package.

Scenario a. They send a taxi to the airport. Company asks for £25 in advance . Customer replies they will pay on arrival . Customs failure and the person never gets through.

Scenario b. Tour guide applies for a visa which arrives later than expected. Tour doesn't go ahead for logistical reasons. Money was never discussed. And neither party mentioned it

Why are some of our communities so obsessed with village gossip in home countries

Bit of a rant tbh

Why are some so obsessed with societies running on their own , compared to establishing ourselves here. It doesn't make sense. I have seen people neglect their kids with time and money. And then slave away doing Ubereats to make money back(to fill in the holes in their home finances like bills and mortgage)

And I've seen people have their wives work while they just send lots of money abroad to people who don't always need it.

I don't get it

My parents would advise me based on their own financial situation.

When it came to post 16 studies I wanted to go to a religious institution for the stability and routine as my house had none. My parents made many excuses not to send me as they just didn't want to spend the money. But they framed it as being a bad choice for me.

When I went off to the gap year because they could not afford to give me any money at all, my mother complained that my actions had made them lose out govt assistance. In my opinion it would be in the region of a month's wage for me for the year. But for that they wanted me to lose a whole years worth of pay

Recently I asked for some financial help for myself to buy a house. I have been in unstable situations for years with housing . I am adult and offered them a legal share per their proportion in the house and rental payable on that by me to them. They wanted the money for something else which is fine. But my dad presented it to me as the house being unsuitable for my needs. I think he knows it's a lie. And tbh it hurts that he lies to me as a 36 year old. And even tho they are not obliged it hurts that he didn't want to make a small sacrifice for me.

Avoiding student finance

This is more of a social question but would like to ask if anyone out there asked their parents (UK) for financial assistance. How did they respond and how did you proceed in the end

Orders sat around on Eid

Just shows the drivers people take for granted are crucial to this pyramid scheme. Most of the vendors today could neither make the food on time, nor were there drivers.

i was only out because my work finished late. but I can see exactly why some drivers and very casual ones make up the bulk chose not to go out. where I live you'd need danger money. there's a lot of fast expensive cars on on these days harrasing and tailgating. we don't just deliver. we save people hassle and inconvenience and take it on ourselves

Something feels sweet about seeing that and I think for some on a day to day basis like Morrisons and Asda it will be a real issue at least where I am. It might seem clever to send drivers off empty handed or dismiss them. At some point customers twig that other supermarkets are faster even if they don't realise what we put up with in their name..they might just use Uber to order off another supermarket.

.I'm declining more and more of their orders and I would not be surprised if customers are seeing their order bounce round for an hour or two along with cancellation after going to site. 60 items for £5 would fill an entire car and we don't get paid fairly nor tipped by many customers when it's cases of water or exceptionally poor parking at their house, never mind having to get a trolley and a quid and wheel it all the way to the back of the car park

I did have one customer absolutely at his wits end once and ask if I would indeed deliver after so many had cancelled. it does happen!

It used to be Mcds round here till they got their act together. There's only so many drivers these apps can conjure out of thin air when we are told to go away for simply asking for any Comms, or they are rude to us or think the Uber customers should wait till all the in house customers are served their food(which could be several hours) and that drivers should come back(we would if we were being paid nmw) and stop being annoying (by turning up to collect food for their customers based on the prep time input by their company on the system)

avoid UK study for residency my sincere experience

My honest experience . My_qualifications is living there and being Indian myself

Many students were conned to uproot their lives with dependants, take loans and sell land and assets

Then the rules changed and many people were left stuck working low paid jobs

Now many are returning and the first will return this year and then every year from now for three years with debt

the racism has only increased as many Indians are working low paid jobs in small towns which never had international students, many staying in non uni towns in poor quality housing.

Now the govt showed its true colours. For residency please don't consider if you have taken such huge sacrifices.

Some people think they have to do something, anything to succeed. This is not a question of daring or courage or luck. You need hard skills in stem and still a lot of luck. The jobs market is bad there for locals. For many this is not calculated risk but a huge crazy gamble. If you think it is bad now, how does it help you to return with debt you didn't have or need

edit- I think the bulk of the discussion has happened. finally just to state I am not a failure for pr. I am not even an Indian national or born in India. I am simply trying to warn people. if anything I am a failure in my own right as I work manual jobs now and I am surrounded by people who took the above route.

as expected some people have taken offence at me wanting to "pull up the ladder". fine you do what you want. Others have told me I'm a loser trying to get pr. as per my above edit, I am not needing pr. I am trying to warn people as a fellow human with sympathy for Indians because of how bad it would be to return with. nothing and unnecessary debt. it can't get worse , some people say. well if you return with debt ,yes it just did.

Anyone ever been in Starmers position in a job?

Been there a few times, although probably didn't cock up as much as him 🤣

Had someone new start or told to train an existing person. And the writing was on the wall. Also had a temp who had covered me on holiday that the production manager liked, mysteriously turn up to a major meeting with my line manager on my return from holiday

then it was just a case of officially being told. always never something they had a solid reason for. just "business needs", change in requirements
