Looking to read (not run) Ravenloft

Hi, I'm a Castlevania fan and have been interested in Ravenloft for some time but not explored it at all. Where's the best place to start? Old source books modules? VRGtR? Horrified or Castle Ravenloft (boardgames)? The TSR novels? Something else?

I'm happy to add more details if needed to find the right thing.

More Thrawn

I know the newer Thrawn books had a mixed reaction/reception among EU folks. Does anyone know if Zahn is working on more? I'm about out of Zahn SW books to read (I think just Survivor's Quest and Choices of One at this point).

Necessary mods for '23 Transit 350?

We just got a full size van for the first time. Use is as a daily driver/road trips for above Aug size family with teens (7 of us total), not a camper van. What are some "necessary" mods or accessories you Transit owners like/couldn't live without? What can I skip? This is a 12 passenger, white, former fleet vehicle w/ a bit more than 60k on it.

I've seen and am thinking abt tinting (currently none), floormats (currently none. Do you all like weathertech $100 more than the less expensive alternatives? We do have rain and snow), and shocks (but not convinced, but I am the one driving), what else? Anything under the hood?

Fit/stretch question

I got some Smiths last fall and didn't wear them much because $$$, and have been wearing them more in the past 6 months and have discomfort in left shoe (outstep just toward ankle from pinky toe) and right shoe (around heel at top of shoe and one top of "ring" toe). I was fitted in my AE store and tried on a few sizes and went w the 11D. Probably worn around 15-20 times, usually around 8 hours but only a couple hours some (so total of maybe 50-70 hours?). They should be broken in, right?

can I do anything to stretch these where needed at home or can my local (highly reputable) cobbler do anything? Let me know if I should post a Pic.

I want these to work, they look great and I sure paid for them.

These are 5 year old shoes (or so). I didn't do a lot to care for them early on (trees in them but not a lot of cleaning/polishing), probably worn 1-2x/week for 3/4 of each year. The black marks on the upper are from my overshoes rubbing when it rains). I'd like to keep them going another year or so if possible (some holes inside to the back side of the upper). Do you think they can make it or am I dreaming? I usually condition w lotion or conditioner then cream polish then wax polish, rarely saddle soap at the start. Is the leather here of good enough quality to actually absorb the stuff I'm putting on (I can't tell but it reacts differently than my AEs).

Ought I soap these or start w conditioning?

Related question, I thought burnishing might help conceal some of the wear around the toes, can I do that effectively w black cream or wax polish or do I really need to strip the polish and use dye?

Getting a new bar for my kids

I have a 13 year old who asked about getting dumbells and I told him why barbells are better. He can't do the empty bar yet (5'8" 120# prob 4% body fat, lol) so I need something lighter. Should I get a short 5 or 10# Olympic (more expensive) or a 10# standard bar (i.e. 1", less expensive and I have 25# of standard plates to get him up to my empty bar). He's not training yet, just curious about learning the lifts.

GOG games won't launch

Well they launch and say "Playing" but actually don't. Talking about late-90s stuff, not bleeding edge. I could get a DOS game to launch. Installing through the software manager in LinuxMint, only GOG games, playing on desktop (only 1pc, no Steam Deck).

Any ideas?

EDIT: logfile https://dpaste.com/ALDWCL6LD

I've tried renaming the folder without special characters (and changing the wine prefix folder) and also have tried a different (more mainstream with same engine) game and had similar results (logfile here: https://dpaste.com/3JKZGLRME ).

USB ports switching on and off?

On my old mint install (and the new one) I've had a problem with my peripherals not communicating periodically (multiple times a minute, usually for 2-5 seconds). They are run through a USB hub. I'm assuming this is a driver or power issue? I have tried a different port (both 3.0) and have not had success with it either (and don't expect both ports are malfunctioning). It's a Beelink SER5.

Install an AppImage

I just finished my Maté reinstall (I mucked up a previous install, still new at this) and only have a couple programs left (MuseScore 4 and Grand Orgue 3.17) to install. Both come as AppImages by default (which I understand to be "run without installing" format). Since these are high-frequency programs that use a fair bit of customization, is there a more permanent way to install these programs (and update without needing to reinstall and redo all of my settings every time)?

Reinstall or try to fix (Linux Mint NOT a poweruser)

Hi, I put Mint on a new mini PC (Beelink SER5) last year or a bit longer ago, without really learning Linux and patched in fixes as needed. A lot of things on my system don't work (that I think should be): usb port timeouts, software that doesn't work properly (wine, heroic game launcher) and probably needs reconfigured or new install, I don't know what kind of stuff on the backend that I've used for a fix and now is taking up space, etc.

Should I backup files and do a fresh install of Mint or try to fix what I have? Does anyone have a recommended series (youtube) for learning mint as a new user? I was great w windows and did a lot of dos gaming as a kid but that was 30 years ago. Thanks!

I'm reading this thread, too, as there seem to be some common points:

Repair or not before trade

My 19 Kia Sedona (second owner, 99k), needs spark plugs and at least one coil (abt $1k), consuming oil faster than usual, generally fair to good condition. We are getting a new car soon anyway, is it worth paying for this repair before getting the new car (trade/sale value) or not and just getting the other car sooner?

Family PC for <$500 and monitor upgrade

Hi, I got some help picking out a Beelink SER5 last year and my wife wants to get a mini pc to replace her aging laptop and set up as a workstation for our growing children (one soon to be in highs school).

Use: Internet, Youtube, light streaming use (Netflix or whatever), MS Office, Shutterfly app, and vintage games (late 80s to maybe 2010 or so at most).

How much RAM, SSD, processing, etc. should I be looking for? I found a GMKtec for 290 the other day that looked good enough and like my BeeLink fine. Thinking about 300 for this.

I'm using a 24 in monitor I already have for that project (can't really go bigger for distance to screen) and will be upgrading my monitor to either 2 x 27 or more likely a curved 32 (I had been running an old 17 as a side screen for mt 24 before the new mini and miss the extra space). Anyone have opinions on curve monitors or one that size to replace my 17 + 24 setup?

Thanks!

Mini win (syntax)

I'm working on my reading fluency this summer with Comenius' Orbis (not advanced but a lot of vocab) and picked up Cambridge LC v3 again last night (bc it was upstairs and Comenius wasn't). I was surprised that while I was reading today I found myself taking in the Latin syntax in order instead of skimming sentences for different parts of speech to work it into English syntax. This isn't "real Latin" and not particularly difficult Latin syntax but I'm counting it as a mini win!

Running older games (GOG) with linux

Hello, I switched to linux (mint) about a year ago, learned enough to get it to work (web browser, word processing, games that run from steam, etc.). I've been working on getting some of my GOG titles (HoMM3) to run the past few days with no success, what am I missing?

I setup Wine and then tried to use Bottles but can't get the .exe to actually launch. I did get the install/setup .exe to go. Most of what I'm finding to help seems out of date, uses a different distro (I'm on mint), or is aimed at setting up a launcher and I really just want to run from my pc, not go through an app like steam if possible (is possible for GOG in windows).

Linking a video would be good help, I think, thanks.

P.S. happy for any learn linux better tips, too.

Idler pulley arm in GTD42EASJ2WW (ge elec dryer) popping out of place

Working on my sister's dryer (replaced broken belt, pulley, dryer bearings) and the idler pulley arm popped out of socket. It looks like it's supposed to be held in place by a metal tab that came folded back and got loose. I got everything working but it popped put on the second load this evening. Any ideas about what might be wrong? The arm is in fine condition.

Thanks!

Kindle Latin novels

I have some kindle credit and was thinking about a Latin language novel to supplement an LLPSI approach. I'm aware of the Hobbit, Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter (not interested), are any of these stand out or good. Are there better choices? I'd be inclined to The Hobbit BUT I've seen (elsewhere here O think) it is poor Latin in spots.

Thanks!
