Games that feel like dnd? (That aren't isometric CRPGs)

So Ive got a Saturday and Tuesday night ttrpg group, but sometimes it isnt enough, its a bit too slowly paced (being once a week and all), or I just wanna do something else but still want to play dnd and cant.

And therefore, Im trying to fill that hole with a video game. But it seems all the best ones are isometric CRPGS, and Ive played a ton of them.

Also, it may just be me, but as much as I do in fact LOVE the isometric games, I always feel a bit distant from my character/the game itself because of the isometric view. 1st person is probably the best for that, but personally I prefer 3rd because I like being able to see my characters gear level up with them.

Frankly, Oblivion or Skyrim would both be the perfect game for what Im feeling and asking for. But Ive played those games to absolute hell, so they dont appeal much very often anymore. But I am absolutely chasing the feeling I got the first time I played through Oblivion. As a Dark Brotherhood member, I remember RPing stalking people in their houses, sitting in their corner chair while they slept. Just waiting for the right moment to kill them, instead of using the "wait" feature. I probably havent felt that connected to a game or its world any time other than playing RDR2 for the first time.

Ive been thinking about trying Neverwinter Nights, especially since its on sale rn and its pretty much the only game Beam Dog has published that I havent played yet. But I thought Id see if anyone here had any recommendations.

So does anyone have any other good suggestions for me?

Anyone know where the popular fantasy ores came from?

I know this probably seems like a kind of silly question, but I watch a lot of fantasy anime and play tons of fantasy RPG games. What do most of them have in common for weapon types? Steel is shit. Only the weak noobs wear that shit. But whats stronger than steel? Titanium? Sometimes, yeah. Or often times its silver (ironically enough, cause steel weapons would be much better than silver Id wager...unless youre fighting a ghost ofc) But what if you want something stronger? Then suddenly we're wearing Mithril, or Adamite/Adamantium/whatever, maybe Orichalcum. But why? Where did we collectively get these from? As a long time Runescape player, I cant help but notice when they pop up in other games. And I know Runescape didn't invent them, so they got the idea from the cultural fantasy mythos just the same as everyone else.

I know Mithril is in LotR, which seems to be where 75% of modern fantasy pulls its ideas from. But idk if it was the first or not.

Anyway, its just something I come back to wonder every now and then. Didnt know if anyone had an etymology they could share.

How did Persona overtake SMT to become the new mainline focus?

Just something ive been curious about, as I haven't really been into either series, or even the genre, for very long now compared to many others. And the answer could be as simple as "it sold better, and just kept selling better" lol but I thought Id ask you guys in case there was more to it, or anything interesting behind how it played out that way.

Thanks for any answers, I appreciate your doing so! 🙏

Favorite game(s)/era?

Im sure this has been asked before, but Im just curious what you guys have to say. The series has a pretty good amount of games now, and so theres quite a few to choose from at this point.

I havent played all of them yet, but Id have to pick Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. But close behind are probably the GBA games. But the Greil games have the better map designs by far. And Titania, ofc 😂

I know a lot of people really like the newer ones, and I had a lot of fun being addicted to them for awhile too. But I just really like the straight forwardness of the GBA games, and think that the Greil games have the sweet spot of exposition and actual gameplay. Whereas the newer ones, I feel like I spend more time doing all the extra stuff than I do in actual battles. Not complaining or anything, I know thats a lot of people's favorite part. Just explaining my opinion. The DS/3DS games have a good balance as well, but I havent played them as much as the GBA, and for whatever reason, Im just super partial to GBA over DS. Probably cause I didnt have one growing up. But I did really like the whole "having your kids be units" thing in Awakening. Which is a great game in general.

And yes, I do plan on buying a Switch 2 just for Fortunes Weave. And yes, Im mad about it 😭

Anyway, give me your favorites. And if you have the time, your reasons why.

Just wanted to make a Lammis appreciation post 🖤

Just finishing S1 now, after having it on my list for awhile. And Ive seen a lot of anime, for better or worse, but I think out of all of them so far, the "Most perfect woman" award goes to Lammis. Dont get me wrong, anime is absolutely rife with amazing, powerful, beautiful women. Its practically a genre at this point. And Im sure, depending on whatever criteria you have, she may not even make your top 20 list. But imo, she ticks all the boxes (no pun intended) of what an all around, good person is and exceeds it in every way. Shes an absolute precious gem of a gal, and the world would be a better place if we were all Lammises 😂 world peace would be achieved over night (sorry Anya).

I would become a vending machine in a second if it came with having a Lammis 🖤

Edit: sorry about the picture quality. Idk what happened 😅

Finally started P5 a couple days ago.

Bought it literally like 2 or 3 years ago with the intention to go through all of the Persona games and well...didnt. I played about 30 hrs of P3r on gamepass, and thought it was pretty good. A bit repetitive, but the music was great and still gets stuck in my head. But it didnt really have me dying to play the other games.

Decided to play it on a whim, after wanting to either start P3r over or play 5. And I gotta say, Ive been ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED since my first couple hours.

Ive always loved the Persona visual style, dont get me wrong. But the game being much more linear than P3r's dungeons has really made all the difference to how enjoyable it is for longer play sessions. I love all the characters, from Horny Coffee Dad Replacement Guy to Sexy Goth Doctor, to Angrily Nice Best Friend. All the classic archetypes (no pun intended). But my absolute favorite part, and what made me really fall in love with the game? Morgana. Why didnt anyone tell me about Morgana??? He says hes not a cat, but from the second he opened his mouth, there was no hiding that that was the Palmtop Tiger 😂 I never skip Morgana's lines just because I love Cassandra Lee Morris's voice acting so much. Especially because I literally just played tjepugh FE3H a couple weeks ago, and she was great there too. And between that and the constant flirting with Ann, I may have a new character obsession. And yes, Im looking for a plush rn.

Thats all I wanted to say. Great game, really wish I had gotten into it sooner, but playing through a game you love for the first time is never something to complain about.

CRPG players - any experience with these?

I like to use my TV as a big monitor and play in bed because my laptop weighs a thousand pounds and is kind of unruly to use in bed. Could be much worse, but I have other options and so I use them.

That said, I bought a BT, 3/4ths keyboard with a track pad to use for CRPGs because we all know what its like playing them with a controller. Works great except for the fact that since its a bit too big to hold like a controller, the track pad is pretty hard to use when Im laying in bed, with my legs up, using them to support the keyboard while its on my stomach, which is how im comfortable.

So I was looking at something smaller since its not like I need to be able to lay out abunch of macros super quickly or anything, the little keyboard should be more than okay.

Yes, I know I can just use a wireless mouse, and Ive been. But it would be great to have a little thing I can just hold and chill in bed with. So I just wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with any of these little, handheld kb-trackpad/ball things and what they think. Doesn't have the be the exact one pictured, although this seems to be a popular choice for cyberdecks, phones, and whatnot. But Im wide open to others. My biggest concern is that CRPGs often have wide, open worlds that are navigated by moving to the edge of the screen, which is whats making my current one hard to use. And so such a small trackpad would need to be calibrated to a pretty high sensitivity, at which point it may be hard navigating UIs and menus. So one with a stick/ball may be better? Not sure tbh. But theres really only a handful or so to choose from, so if theyre viable, Id like the one best fitted specifically for these isometric games I love so much.

Thanks for any advice, I appreciate you lending your time 🙏

Late 90s/early 2000s, which RPGs do you prefer?

Just curious which you guys find better as a whole. We have CRPGs like Baulders Gate 1&2, Fallout, and Planescape Torment, or the console focused Nintendo and Sony games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Chronotrigger. Both genres are great, and there are definitely some JRPGs I like better than other CRPGs, but personally Id have to go with CRPGs. Although if I could only have one genre exist in a timeline, Im really not sure which I would go with, and may actually choose JRPGs in that regard. Certainly JRPGs if we're looking at the entire catalog, since there are just so many more of them. And although CRPGs have definitely had a renaissance in the last decade or so, I kept it to late 90/early 2000s, because it was seen as kind of a golden age for both genres.

Feel free to explain your answer if youd like! Im just curious what you guys think, no one is right or wrong! Thanks 🙏

Has the Switch port been updated at all?

Thought it would be awesome to have in my Odin 2 mini, but Ive heard the Switch version is riddled with problems. But that was some time ago and didnt know if it had been updated to a playable state or not. Or am I better off just getting the Android version?

Favorite party compositions?

Hey guys, like a lot of us, Im a big Infinity Engine game fan who just watched Josh Strife Hayes' Icewind Dale video. I really like the party he made up of an Undead focused pally, cleric, ranged-based fighter, mage/thief, and bard. Definitely seems like a well-rounded party made by someone who is obviously familiar with the IP.

So I was wondering what kinds of parties you guys are setting up. Which ones are your favorite, which are the best performing, which were the most fun, etc. Whatever criteria youd like to include! As much as I love these games, I actually haven't played IWD yet. So its as much research as it is just a curiosity.

Thanks guys 🙏

Looking for book recommendations!

The post body is in the comments. Ive tried to post this literally 6 different ways, and the AI system just wont let me. The first time it flagged it as me trying to identify something, and the other times, it keeps saying I have paragraphs over 1000 or 700 characters, no matter how I try to break it up.

So please bare with me here, cause I cant seem to get it 😅

Thanks for any help 🙏

Cool FE merch?

I love, love, LOVE this series. I first played Path of Radiance like 3 or so years ago, only having played it a very small amount as a kid. And ive been hooked since 🤷 sure, there are probably "better" tactical rpgs out there. Games with better stories, deeper mechanics, etc. But for me, none of them hit the right spot the same way Fire Emblem does.

And so, I wanted to get some cool merch. Buuuuut, the truth is that the series just doesnt lend itself much to that sorta thing. One thing I wanted specifically was a black shirt with the GBA Fire Emblem logo, and I found exactly that. But there's not really much else I can think of. The problem is that its based so much on the characters, not really "the franchise" itself. And those characters are just generic anime people. Which is fine for like, a shirt of one of the specific games like Engage or Three Houses. But even then, the pickings are pretty damn slim.

Anyway, I wanted to see if you guys had any merch you like a lot! Im not sure if comments can have pics here or not, but if they are, please feel free to show and tell. If not, links are cool too! Idc if its clothing necessarily, it can be whatever. I know, for example, I saw a really cool Engage rug on Etsy that I wouldnt have minded buying if I could.

Thanks! I appreciate anything ya got 🙏

Longer length isekai?

Imo, theres almost nothing worse than watching an isekai you're really enjoying and then getting cut off at ep 12, knowing there will never be a second season. Truly horrible..

But I feel like Ive seen all the good, more established ones. Tensura, Shield Hero, Overlord, Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, Tsukimichi, etc.

I honestly thought for a long time now that I was just burnt out, or it was my depression, that was keeping me from enjoying anime as much as I did. But then last week I started Ascendance of a Bookworm and watched all 3 seasons + the 5 released from S4 in a 2 day binge.

So, Im wanting some more of that I guess 😅

Anyone have anything good? As always, youre all very much appreciated 🙏

What do you guys think of Sword of Convallaria?

I stumbled on the reddit for SoC randomly and decided to look it up. I thought it looked interesting, but am automatically SERIOUSLY turned off by the fact its a mobile game. Nothing against mobile gamers, but personally, I haven't found a single one yet that isnt just a shameless cash grab and/or gambling simulator. So I totally avoid Android/ios games as a whole. But Im sure there are some out there that are actually good games, and I may be missing out by ignoring the platform entirely. But when I saw it has a gacha system, it definitely didnt make me feel any more confident.

So I just wanted to ask you guys here what you thought of the game in general. If its worth taking a look at, or is just a waste of time. How it compares to Fire Emblem (whatever gen of the series) or other similar games. And most importantly, if its a real game and not just a money sucking pit with the clothing of a Square-Enix TRPG. I dont want to sound like Im denigrating mobile gamers or anything. You can enjoy whatever you'd like, of course. I just have a really bad impression of mobile games from my time trying several of them in the past. But Im more than open to trying them if theyre good games!

Pushing the limits of mens fashion

I just wanted to make this post because its a thought Ive had a lot these last few years, and I just wanted to share the sentiment with anyone here who it may apply to.

But seriously, women have all the options and we're so relegated to such a small amount of options in comparison. I grew up in alternative subcultures, with giant mohawks, all kinds of colored hair, jackets with hundreds of spikes, studs, and chains, big 80s metal hair, flair pants, even long dresses. All kinds of stuff. People did look at me and my friends sideways in our small town of 20k people, and the smaller villages outlining them. But it was fun, and it became just what I was comfortable wearing despite being a rather mild mannered person otherwise.

I see you guys looking at musicians, characters in movies and anime, or in the video games you play. Customizing your characters with all kinds of cool outfits and things you would never wear yourself, despite how much you enjoy them. From cool armors, capes and cloaks, vambraces, hats, over-coats, etc. Im not saying you should dress up like Jon Snow (because I know we've all wanted to). I mean, you can if ya want. But like, find ways to incorporate your inspirations into your style. If you want your style to look like a background character in Night City, or you see a cool, beat to shit, jacket in Fallout, go for it. If you want to wear a jacket with a giant hood that makes you feel like a Sith lord all winter, go for it. A musician whos style you love and think "I could never pull that off"? You *can* pull it off, in your own way. Whatever it is youre into, try to find ways to incorporate and push the limits of your fashion. Men's fashion doesnt have to be the same black tee and pants, or a suit. Not that those things look bad, they definitely dont. And they're easy. But try jewelry, paint your nails, try some eyeliner or eye shadow. Or whatever tf, doesnt have to be "alternative" if thats not you.

Just do some different things, and dont be afraid to try to really push your own boundaries, as well as the conventional ones, as long as *you* like it. Because if those of us with the want and passion dont do it, or think "I really like it, but I could never do it", it'll be "jeans and a tee shirt" for ever. I know a reddit post isnt going to change the environment or anything, but Id really just like to see us all experiment and try new things more. I still see women doing so, but it just seems the men I see both online and in public arent doing so very much anymore. And it makes me kinda sad to see, cause I know most of us love it just as much. That's all 🙏

Similar to Ascendance of a Bookworm?

Just finished the whole (released) series in the last 2 days. Absolutely loving it, super upset that I have to wait till more episodes release. Itd been on my list for awhile, and it really is the first anime in a long time thats been able to capture my attention so thoroughly.

So, while I wait, I thought id see what you guys have to suggest. I really enjoy isekai, along with the "knowledge from another (our) world/time" aspects. I really enjoy city building as well, and wish it had more of that but whatever. I also like the setting as well.

Ive enjoyed the other popular isekai anime as well. Tensura, Overlord, and Mushoku being my favorites so far. That said, Ive seen a lot of the more popular ones, but definitely not all. So even if you think theres a good chance Ive seen it, feel more than free to suggest whatever, just in case I havent, or maybe someone else may be interested as well.

Thanks guys, counting on ya to help me find a good one! I appreciate it a lot 🙏

Can someone explain the ending of S2? (Spoilers)

As the title says, Im fully expecting some spoiling. Thats fine. Im just wondering what happened after Shadow went atomic and ended up back in his old world.

Did the two collide and combine? It looked like Nishino used some kind of magic on her weapon before she was attacked. So thats my best guess.

I dont need the whole thing spoiled or anything. Just looking for some closure for S2 while Im impatiently waiting for the movie next year. Could I read the LN or something? Yes, and I may. But rn I don't have the time. So I appreciate it if you can help me wrap S2 up in my head!

Thanks a ton 🙏

What games do you guys play while listening to vocaloid?

Maybe not the best sub for this, so sorry if so. But I've been getting into vocaloid music pretty hard the last few months. Ive been a musician since I was about 9 years old, but after dealing with depression for so long, I pretty much all but stopped playing or listening to music. I usually listen to other music like hardcore punk, post punk, cold wave, thrash metal. But vocaloid has really made me love music again. Ive even started producing again because its like a whole new world has opened up to me and its inspiring! Its actually very wonderful to feel again.

Anyway, Ive been trying to find time to listen to music during my day more. So I figured itd be great to do while I play games. I usually play more story focused games, so music doesnt really work well with it. Mostly western RPGs, CRPGs, JRPGs, and ARPGs. Lotta different RPGS 😅 I mean, its fine for like Path of Exile or even older JRPGs that dont have cutscenes or sound that demands attention. So Ive been playing Chronotrigger and Minish Cap.

But I wanted to get some suggestions from you guys. You sit down at your desk/couch/bed, pull out whatever device, put on your cat ear headphones and start a playlist. What game are you playing?

(Sorry, this wasnt intended as an appreciation post, but it turned into one. But I do alao want some games that dont mind some background music! Thanks for any suggestions!)
