What do you think about a player having two PCs at once?

Im just curious of your thoughts on this idea, system agnostically.

To me the only issue is about share or time in the spotlight; but I think a good player/gm could easily keep this reasonable. Afterall, plenty of games already have PCs with pets, or underlings they control or RP as. And of course, the GM plays dozens of characters.

But Im just curious what the general feeling is.

If you think its a bad idea, would you be more or less okay with it if it was 1 char sheet and the "2 characters" part was purely role play, like split personality ala Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I'm addicted y'all

2 more tokens for magic the gathering, both have the reverse on the other side.

The crown is just highlightered, as a test.

I got into linocut printing recently and thought y'all might like my bookmarks

(flamingo is incidental, frog is the goblin core part)

I realized I can make tokens for me and my friends Magic the Gathering decks!

What should I do next?

Are homemade tokens allowed here?

I designed and printed my friend some bird tokens for his rendmaw deck

My very first linocut! It is the symbol for my ttrpg The Price Of Power (WIP)

u/ataraxic89 — 12 days ago

So it begins!

My heart has been aching because of the beauty of the pictures I see here. And before that one of my favorite local artists is a printmaker.

So today I finally made my own!

The symbol is the icon for my tabletop RPG, the price of power. The concept is mine but a friend of mine did the actual visual design in the pixel art (just his preferred medium).

I absolutely love it!

Micro Horror Story: Interruptions!

I cant stand a player who wont let the GM finish the "Describe the surroundings/situation" phase of the rpg gameloop. Like you walk into a room, and the gm starts "It smells sweetly of roses, you see in the corner"WHAT COLOR ARE THE ROSES?"...in the corner, hold on, in the corner a big"WHICH CORNER? NORTH SIDE?".. wait!" and so on, for every room.

Or, we we going over a new mechanic for the first time and the GM says "give me a second Ill, read out some general info for this mechanic before we get to it" and literally 1 sentence in they were asking about aspects of that mechanic that the GM was trying to get.

They got the boot soon after.

How does your game handle knowledge for PCs?

Im particularly interested in systems which dont make it the same as physical skills.

Also, how does a PC do research on things they dont know?

I like to support local info/news Via Huntsville Blast but the ads are *insane* and the website is formatted terribly.

I find their news about new shops and events very helpful for planning weekends but by god its too much!

In a town with 100,000 software dves Im sure yall can find someone to make your wbesite/newsletters laid out less atrocious. And I get the need to adverts, life aint free. But jesus can it not have 3-5 in a row?

Or hell, id pay a few bucks a month to remove them all.

And yes, to the curmudgeons, I realize that even the local events is its own advertisement; but its the one i want to know about. I realize the irony of paying to see only the ads I want, but thats the way it is.

Interested in joining a monthly indie TTRPG review club?

On the Rules As Written ttrpg development server we have a community run monthly review of member's ttrpgs. People submit, vote on who to review, make reviews (public), and move to the next month.

Anyway, if youre interested in that, or just joining a ttrpg dev focused discord, come on over!

My one piece of advice for new designers; don't try to design a new Core Resolution Mechanic.

First let me say, its not a terrible thing if you ignore this or just want to do it for fun. But I very often see desginers here and elsewhere who get very hung up on trying to design the "perfect" resolution system. They seem to spend a long time on it and very often end up just making a bad CRM.

Btw, if youre not familiar with this term, Im just talking about the way uncertain things are decided in the game, like d20+mod, roll over DC in D&D.

So my thesis:

  1. Making a very good CRM does not make your game good. Most of the value of a ttrpg is in tone, feel, and how the broader mechanics and system match the needs of the audience. Yes, CRM is a part of that. But for my money it is one of the smaller parts outside of some gimmick CRMs, like DREAD.

  2. Making a bad CRM absolutely will ruin an otherwise good game. A clunky or bad CRM, or worse, one whose math literally doesnt work out the way you think it does, will kill a game no matter what else youve done.

  3. Making a good CRM is actually a pretty high design skill task and not a great one to start with before you have some systems under your belt. It is like trying to start to learn blacksmithing by making a Katana as your first project.

So, I suggest looking for a CRM which sounds right for your game, and just using it. Usually just a few small modifications will be able to fit it to your needs and you gain the benefit of broader audience familiarity.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

edit: because some have misunderstood me I want to restate my point in as clear a way as I can muster:

> A NEW designers time and creative energy is better spent on the things that make TTRPGs unique and interesting to consumers (which doesnt mean commercial use, anyone consuming your product); unique systems and mechanics which support and reinforce interesting worldbuilding and themes. The CRM is one of the least impactful and most difficult ways to do that. Thus it stands to reason to come back to it after youve developed a few systems and have a better grasp on what makes a good CRM tick.

The Rule of Cruel

https://i.imgur.com/oFyA3Ey.png

Im reading the rules for the soon-to-release game Tales From Elsewhere - Clockworld and I just loved this small section in the introduction and its play on Rule of Cool. :)

edit: I realize I have not properly contextualized this game/passage. Sorry. So this game is a horror survival in the weird west. It is meant to be somewhat scary and tense and the art and basic lore (which ive only read a little) set the stage well for this passage feeling right at home. I also just enjoyed the wordplay :)

In the spirit of anti-perfectionism please share your worst painted models!

I saw comments on a post from earlier about how sad it is that new people in the hobby feel so pressured to be perfect due to social media.

I strong agree that the idea of "perfectly optimal" has infected and ruined many things we do, not just painting models. So in this spirit or revolt against paralytic perfectionism, please share the worst painted models you personally have ever made!

Would this offend you?

Maybe an odd question but Ive been working on a table top RPG for about 8 years now. One of the playable species in this game are a bovinefolk which look like minotaurs (but fully furry, with hooved feet)

At the time I stuggled to name them so I was just looking for cow-like mythology and found Nandi. At the time I dont think I really even looked where the name came from. But since then they have been called in the game Nandians.

So I guess Im just here to ask how that strikes you.

Do any of the top end brands allow you to set an exact emptying rate (for base stations)?

I got a Dreame X60 but it has only a "high freuqency" which is still wayyyyy to few times when you have a couple furry pets. It sometimes gets impacted and cant empty. Im thinking of returning it and getting something else.

I dont get it, it would be trivial to just allow us to set "empty every X square feet cleaned". The hardware is pretty good, Its such an easy software fix.

Does any brand's software let you set a specific area cleaned per empty?

Can't edit Google docs, keyboard doesn't show

I can't edit from my phone. No other account. In editing mode. Hell, even the font controls show. Just no keyboard (gboard even).

The weird thing is it does work sometimes but not by any means of mine. Restarted app, keyboard app, phone itself. Doesn't help
