I've forged a connection with a partner, which I appreciate, but the partner uses me for mundane tasks that don't require much actual thought---quick research on which statute might apply, proof-reading, and fill-in-the-blank type writing (e.g., writing "Ex. A" next to a section in a brief that flags the materials in Exhibit A). Consequently, I don't feel like my skills are growing, and I fear that, if I were to lateral elsewhere (as a senior associate), I wouldn't perform up to expectations.

I’ve tried a dozen times to open an account online. Each time, I’m told I need to apply in person. When I went in person, I was told that I need to bring my social security card (of course, I have my number memorized)—even though I had my American passport. Why is TD making it so difficult for me to open an account?

I've used my 3101fdw for a few years, and it's great. But I just ran out of toner---hours before I have a big project due. So I ran to Staples and bought the right replacement toner (138A). But now I'm getting an error stating that the cartridge memory is missing. I've tried unplugging / re-plugging and I've updated the firmware. Neither fix helps. Can someone please help?

My G0 was born during a time when the relevant province mandated civil birth registration but, for reasons unclear to me, my G-1s didn't register G0's birth until decades later. The original registration (which includes mother's name, father's name, birthdate, place of birth, and home address) was filed with the province and it's housed in the provincial archives. (I have three decades worth of Canada Census records to support that G0 was born on the date attested in the delayed registration to the mother who signed the delayed registration.) Is a delayed registration of birth going to confuse IRCC or land my application in PSU (not that it's really possible to predict who gets sent to PSU)?

I’ve left a large firm to go to a small shop, and since I don’t have five junior associates to help me, I’m considering using ChatGPT—but I don’t want AI slop; I want it to really work for me, not against me. (IME Claude has an annoying ‘personality’ and is wrong more often than GPT even on the highest thinking levels.) I’m happy to pay for the highest priced model. Beyond that, are there any plug-ins / add-ons I should use with GPT?

I’m wondering whether anyone in my living family would qualify for German citizenship by descent. We have many German ancestors who made their way to the U.S. in the 1700s (mostly Huguenots); I’m sharing details for the most recent German immigrant. 

My great-great grandmother Augusta was born in 1895 in West Prussia. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1903 (it’s my understanding that 1904 is a key year and my ancestor maybe immigrated a few weeks too early). She doesn’t appear to have naturalized before 1915, per U.S. and New York census records. (Her father never naturalized despite living in the U.S. for fifty years.) She married an American in 1920. Their daughter (born in 1922) is my dad’s mom’s mom. My dad is alive; everyone else is deceased. 

I figure it’s a stretch but I just want to be sure. I’d greatly appreciate your insight. 

My desktop sees the Proton VPN but all my other devices are using the original IP. This seems really strange. The GLI app says all devices are on the VPN but that’s just not true. What should I do?

I was born in the U.S. with dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship. I've lived my entire life in the States, and I graduated from a respected-but-not-elite American law school ten years ago. Over the past ten years, I've worked as an associate at a BigLaw firm and in highly regarded litigation boutiques. I also spent a couple years in government. I'm now hoping to join a New York office of a Canadian-based firm, and I don't know where to begin. I've reviewed Chambers rankings for my practice area, so I know which firms "play" in the New York market. But as best I can tell, these firms don't really seem to hire American lawyers; instead, I see a handful of attorneys licensed in Canada and authorized (I mean authorised) to consult in New York on Canadian matters. If anyone here is at a large Canadian firm with a New York presence, I'd love to be in touch with you.

Many of my ancestors were living in small Devon towns throughout the 1600s and into the late 1800s before immigrating to the United States. Towns like St. Giles in the Wood, Frithelstock, Monkleigh, and Roborough by Torrington.

I also have family from Essex that immigrated to the U.S. in the early-mid 1600s but those communities seem like they were more developed.

My wife died in May 2025, and so both June and July (and onward) were very difficult months. For whatever reason, July 4, 2025, was especially difficult. (I just chalked it up to the first holiday after she died, and there was lots of talk about happy people going to BBQs and parties.) I sensed things started to change when I moved in September. I've now passed the one year mark since my wife died, and while I am of course still grieving, I'm better than I was a year ago (and I have accepted I'll never be 'perfect' again). But once again it's July 4 and, once again, I'm feeling especially low. I'm in a committed relationship and am spending most of the day with my partner. Yet I can't shake the low feeling. I wonder if it's because I just remember feeling so bad a year ago. Or maybe it's because I remember a few instances on prior Independence Days when my wife and I had disagreements. I don't expect anyone to know. Just thought I'd share with the group.

Host is saying I was involved in a “collision” that messed up one of the vehicle’s tires. I wasn’t involved in a collision and I drove on ordinary city streets, so I don’t know what happened to the tire. The host didn’t say anything when I returned it to him in person. He didn’t even file a claim for 15 hours. I’m disputing but when I spoke with claims department by phone they made it sound like I’m going to be liable for almost $2,000 in damages. What more can I do?

I took a 0.5mg Ativan about seven hours ago for a flight. Next up is a red eye. I’ve never been able to sleep on planes so I’m considering taking the same supplement I take every night before bed: Stress Relax’s Tranquil Sleep (which includes 3mg melatonin, L-theanine, and 5-HTP. I’m sure I’ve taken the two before, about this far apart (in time), but I’m wondering whether others have, too. Fortunately I’m just taking an Uber once I land (and def not drinking).

I became a Mariners fan while living in Oregon and Alaska---and I think the Mariners are the "market" team for the largest geographic area of any team (Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana). It seems like, with the A's moving to Las Vegas, it's quite likely that MLB will put a new, expansion team in the PNW. Portland and Vancouver seem like the most viable options. (I'd personally love to see a new team in Oakland!) How would a new team, in the M's backyard, change the fandom? For Oregon / southern Washington or British Columbia fans: would you change allegiances?
