Diaspora African Indians

Salaam!

I’m of Indian heritage, my family, like many other Indian communities been based in Africa for over 200 years.

I’ve moved to the UK a few years ago and have noticed that as a female I’m struggling to connect with the local community of people who either haven’t been out of India for a while, and those who have moved over.

Most of it is cultural and to some extent even the way we practice Islam.

I have 0 connection to India except the colour of my skin. There’s no family there, we don’t speak the language, we don’t have land nor have we ever visited.

Have any of you struggled with the same issue?

Can I do an NPQ while on a sabbatical?

I want to do one of the NPQs offered to teachers ( pastoral/leadership etc) would I be able to do it while taking a break from teaching? Or do I need to be actively working in order for it to be funded?

Thanks!

Haq Bakshish- marriage to the quraan

Haq Bakshish- how do you justify it?

It is complete shirk.
Do people not care about their imaan?

Is this something that tends to happen even within educated communities? Or is it mainly village mentality?

I’ve recently come across this concept and I cannot understand how this is allowed in an Islamic country

Why are male animals the more attractive ones and do the mating whereas in humans it’s opposite?

Women are expected to attract the men and are expected to be presented as attractive towards men whereas it isn’t the case in animals at all

WTW for asking when someone will leave?

We have ETA for when someone will arrive, what is the best word for how long before they leave?

I use it ETA interchangeably ( I know it isn’t right) so I’ll ask, what’s your ETA on leaving…

Looking for the right word

Heartbroken- have to give up the Birks!

Despite wearing them for over a year, every time I wear them I have get blisters on the side of my underfoot.

I’ve recently been to a podiatrist who has told me I don’t really have flat feet and don’t require arch support which is why I don’t do well with the birks and that I need to let them go :(

Soo sad

AITAH for not wanting to financially contribute to a cousins baby shower?

My sister is having a baby shower soon which my mother and I have financed, my cousin is helping with little things like designing an e-vite or planning some games, however, there is no financial contribution from her end at all.

Edit: my cousin will also soon be requiring a baby shower.

My cousin has no siblings, and no other cousins except my sister and I. She does have parents who could arrange this for her.

Although I am absolutely keen to support my cousin and help plan a baby shower. WIBTAH for not wanting to contribute towards it and offer as much help as she has?

Couple of edits:
Happy to plan
Happy to bring a dish
Will most definitely be buying her a gift.

However, financing a shower isn’t cheap, especially when I’m financing my sisters and in addition buying a lot of gifts for my sister, while also having to buy 2 other cousins gifts for their babies coming soon

Thick thighs ruining pants!

Hello!

I’ve started buying trousers which I believe are quality however unfortunately my crotch area is repeatedly being torn regardless of how good the fabric is.

The trousers are brilliant quality otherwise apart from the thigh area ripping.

Is there a solution to this?

Getting bank holidays returned?

Do any of your schools give you bank holidays back?

We lose 7 bank holidays across the academic year. I’m surprised that the union hasn’t fought for these days to be turned to personal days of some sort.

I’m not a well liked teacher

My second year of high school teaching and I’ve come to accept that I’m not a well liked teacher. No thank you cards, no little gifts.

I don’t know how to be the strong teacher which is appreciated by students. I often wonder I’m if I’ve made a career mistake

Disappearing messages

It makes no sense that if person A has turned on the timer, person B is impacted as well.

I’ve just lost several important pictures because some other person turned on disappearing messages.

Absolutely dumb and WhatsApp really needs to fix this

Storms

Why doesn’t the UK experience storms after these heatwaves?

Where I’m from ( South Africa) after intense heat we’d usually have tropical storms in the evening

Is the humidity just not high enough?

Is it worth moving to London for the experience?

I currently live in Bagshot in a house share (750pcm) I love going into London, I will be taking about 3000 home if I move to London and I was wondering if it’s worth it? Or am I experiencing London with rose tinted glasses?

I don’t mind living in a house share, I just love London, I love the social aspects, I want to be able to access the theatre whenever I like, and the parks and the bakeries. I don’t drive so tubes are actually much more helpful.

English- how do I teach students to improve their spelling?

At secondary level, without SEN, apart from highlighting it and getting them to use a dictionary, I’m not sure what I can do to have students improve their spelling.

They’re incredibly bright with poor spelling.

I’m young and want to buy a car, but I live on my own with no family/friend support. The problem is that I don’t even know where to start in terms of buying the car, and when I do get the car, what do I need to do to make sure I’m maintaining it?
