Am I about to be graduated from secured?

Hi, I got a Secured Card in January, did a $400 security deposit, first payment was due in March and I've made all my payments on time, if not earlier. I've made payments for 6 months (March-August), so does this mean I will be graduated to a Secured Card in a few days when my statement comes out? And I will get my check for my $400 deposit? Thanks!

Southwest vs Delta for flying out of DTW

I recently took a trip to NYC in May and used Delta. My airport is DTW, a Delta hub. It was my first time on a plane. I had a great experience. Flew into JFK directly, then EWR for my flight back with a stop in RDU. Nice flight attendants, even almost got $500 to volunteer my seat (in the end they didn't need any volunteers). Delta was nice but the problem is they charge more for flying out of a Delta hub.

Recently I had to book an upcoming flight to DTW to LAX, and Delta was $539 for Main Basic and $689 for Main Classic, but non-stop. I would have gone with Main Basic but you don't get to choose your seats (not even for a fee), and I prefer sitting in a window seat. Also you don't earn SkyMiles which never expire on Delta.

However Southwest (with a layover in DEN) was $406 for Basic or $516 USD for Choice. On Basic I know you can select your seat for a fee but it was actually more than getting a Choice ticket (since it's four flights with the layover) so I went with Choice.

I don't mind layovers at all and actually like them (double the takeoff and landing, exploring an airport, etc). Call me crazy but that's my honest opinion.

I don't mind that Southwest has no IFE, I did like the flight tracking app on Delta but I use headphones and stream from my phone even on Delta. In fact two of my flights on Delta were CRJ-900s, so no IFE, only on my last leg home with was an A320.

I am just bringing a carry on and don't need to check any bags. I would have taken advantage though of a free checked bag if that was still a thing.

Basically what matters to me the most on a flight is price and being able to select seats. Considering I would have to fork over $200 more for Delta (and the ability to choose seats), did I make the right choice by choosing Southwest for this flight? I have heard mixed things.

I think I'll probably stick with Delta if the fares are reasonable. I have a possible future trip in April to LAS and I remember the Delta fares not being super expensive, probably because LAS is not a Delta hub?

Sold a $500 camera with lens, FedEx damaged the lens, but I insured the package, how hard will getting a claim approved be?

Hi. I recently sold a $528 vintage camera with an included Canon lens. The camera doesn't really have an MSRP anymore since it's a vintage camera from the mid 1980s. The camera was sold for parts since I didn't know if the camera body itself functioned. I have photos of the lens and camera before it was shipped.

I shipped it using a FedEx label on eBay, insured the package for $528 using ShipCover (the full value of what the buyer paid me at auction) and packaged it well, in a secure box, etc etc.

Today the buyer got it and they are claiming the front of the lens is damaged and bent. They want to return the item for a full refund and have opened up an "Arrived damaged" return. The seller has provided some photos but not any big photos of the entire lens, just closeups - I've requested that they do that before I accept the return.

I opened up a claim using the seller hub under shipping labels (usually I've done this via the FedEx website). I was told that "If your buyer opened a claim in the Resolution Center, we'll use that case to verify your claim and process your refund".

I've usually never had an issue with FedEx and them approving claims, but am I likely to have to go though a bunch of hoops to get my claim approved? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Also, should I approve the return as soon as they send me more photos, or what? The website says "Whoever receives the damaged items needs to hold on to them until the claim is processed. If your buyer has the damaged items, ask the buyer to hold onto that evidence until the claim is processed."

3 days in LA without a car - how bad will this be?

Hi, so I am flying out to LA, specifically Burbank in September all by myself. I am flying into LAX on the night of the 18th and leaving the morning of the 22nd. I'm going out because I need to palletize some equipment in Burbank to be freight shipped and I have a friend in the area that should be able to help me. I have the 19th and 20th to do whatever I want, and then will palletize the items on the 21st.

The big problem? I don't have a driver's license, so I can't rent anything like a car.

I am aware of the LAX to Van Nuys Flyaway bus and will be using that, plus an Uber/Lyft to get from Van Nuys to my hotel in Burbank. The hotel is about a a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus stop.

I'm planning on mostly staying in the valley, I was thinking about maybe going down to the Hollywood/DTLA area using the B-line subway during one of my two "free days". I will be going to Woodland Hills on the 20th and plan on using Uber/Lyft one way and the bus system the way back.

I don't really have to go to Hollywood/DTLA or Woodland Hills but I'd like to take a day to enjoy and see what little I can see of LA. I'm ovbiously not planning on going to like Disneyland or anything super far. Just sight seeing and taking pictures, then doing the palletizing and heading home.

How is the LA metro bus system? I used public transit when I flew to NYC and it was great, but of course LA is a whole different ballpark compared to NYC. I'm wondering how reliable it usually is and how safe it is too. I've been looking on Google Maps and it seems fine, the only thing is it the time (about 1h 30m from Woodland Hills to Burbank)

I'm budgeting about $300 on Uber/Lyft rides. I plan on using the PayPal debit card to get 5% back on rides and transit.

Let me know any tips of what I should do to save on transit. Thanks!

How to get pallets and shipping materials

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but here goes.

I need to be in LA (Burbank) in mid-September to palletize items for a shipment. They should fit on four pallets. However, I need to find the pallets and the proper materials (straps, pallet wrap, and moving blankets for some of the more fragile items).

Problem is, I'm flying to LA and can't rent a car (no driver's license). So I am stuck using public transit and/or Uber/Lyft. The question is, how am I going to be able to even find four pallets and proper materials without a car?

I have a contact in the area that is happy to help, but I may need a fallback option just in case. Are there any options for me? All I need is the materials and I can palletize everything myself. Please let me know.

Filming a concert for the first time, any advice?

So I have volunteered to record a concert. It's at one of those small music venues. I'm not getting paid anything. It's just a labor of love that the band can use for promotional use and get some experience shooting.

The current HD cameras I have are a Sony PMW-EX3 and an a7 IV.

I know the EX3 is an old camera compared to the a7 IV and I'll probably get laughed at for using it, but I've rigged it up with a Hypderdeck Shuttle to record 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes HQ from the HD-SDI output.

I have only the standard 28-70mm kit lens for the a7 IV, but I have two lenses for the EX3, the stock Fujinon and a Canon 20x6.4. As far as I know the focal lengths are the same but maybe the Canon has better quality glass? It's an HD grade lens.

I'm planning on having the EX3 as the master wide shot, but not sure where to put the a7 IV. I was originally planning on using the a7 as a still camera since I don't have another HD camera (other than my phone lol). As much as I'd like to have multiple HD cameras and edit between them my budget right now doesn't really allow me to do that. I'm not sure if I should just go with just a static wide shot on the EX3 and use the a7 for stills.

As for the audio, I've already checked with the venue and they said they have a mixer with "24 XLR inputs and 4 XLR outputs". I'm not sure if the live mix will be in mono or stereo, so I'm assuming I should bring at least two 25ft XLR cables. I don't have any dedicated audio recorders like a Tascam, just an old Sony PCM-F1 (which is utterly useless unless I want to carry a VCR around). I'm planning on just plugging the XLR cable(s) directly into the inputs on my EX3. I know the EX3 has an internal microphone but I don't think I'd be able to record from it if I use both XLRs.

For recording audio on the a7 IV as a backup and scratch audio, should I get a shotgun microphone that plugs into the hotshoe? I don't have the XLR hotshoe adapter so I'm limited to microphones that plug into the hotshoe or the 3.5mm input.

For power I plan on using a v-mount battery to power the EX3 rig and some kind of dummy battery for the a7 IV.

Any advice is appreciated.

Brunt resistor, no schematic, am I screwed?

I have a old broadcast camera with a high voltage switching power supply for the imaging tubes. When I was unplugging some components a resistor went up in smoke. There wasn't any visible smoke but you could smell something was brunt, and after looking I found a charred resistor.

Surprisingly, when I test with a multimeter I'm getting a reading of 2.60K ohms, or 2.7K. What is the chance at all that this is the original value of the resistor? I don't want to go ahead and possibly replace with the wrong value and risk blowing something else up.

I have no schematic at all, just the camera. I've attached photos of the board, you can see where I've desoldered the brunt resistor.

Am I screwed unless I can somehow find a schematic?

New Pickup: Dell Ultrascan P780

Picked this one up for $300 CAD (about $224 USD), and someone had written on it with a sharpie which I removed with a magic eraser; I removed pretty much all of it but made the texture smooth, which I expected. Not sure if there was anything other way to get it off. Also the right "L" in the DELL logo got partially removed, I'm not sure if I can do anything to remedy that?

The base sadly cracked as soon as I put it on my desk; I think it's a common issue with the plastic getting brittle on these, I have a P991 that also had it's base crack. It's a stupid design because all the weight of the CRT is being put on the plastic base. If anyone knows where I can find a replacement please let me know.

Still waiting on a Displayport to VGA adapter to come so I can hook up my main PC to it.

[US] Is there any valid reason for someone not wanting to use PayPal or eBay, or is it always a scam?

I had someone on a Facebook group selling an old camera. He wanted $150. He claimed he could do free shipping because he had a FedEx account. Sounded good but maybe too good to be legit looking back.

He wanted to do Cashapp. Well the only thing I know about Cashapp is that it's probably like Zelle where it's not designed for goods. And I know scammers love it.

I ask if he can do PayPal G&S. I even offer to pay the 4% in fees myself which would only be $6. He then tells me that someone hacked his wife's PayPal and scammed them out of $6000 and that PP customer support was useless

I then ask if he can do eBay. Again I would pay eBay's fees. Simply responds "No sorry".

At that point I backed out. He of course insisted he wasn't a scammer and offered to "send his ID". He didn't get mad at me for backing out though.

Is there any reason someone would not be able to use PayPal or eBay? Did I avoid a scam here? If I had to guess looking back I avoided a scam.

Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 not working with SDI, only HDMI

I am trying to get a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 working with my Sony PMW-EX3 so I can record in 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes HQ.

The first Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 I bought from MPB wouldn't work with any SSD I gave it (Red light), so I decided to return it and buy another one. That one would detect SDI sources though and light up, just couldn't record because it wasn't playing nice with the SSD.

This new one I got working with an SSD, but none of the SDI functions work. It won't detect an SDI signal or output one. I connected it to my EX3, nothing. I verified my EX3 was outputting HD-SDI video to an SDI LCD monitor. I also tried connecting the Hyperdeck to an older Digital Betacam deck, it only does SD-SDI though. Still nothing.

However, the HDMI interface works perfectly. I was able to capture video to the SSD from my Sony a7 IV over HDMI, and it the Hyperdeck outputs fine to a TV with HDMI.

The only thing I haven't checked is the SDI cable, it's one of those weird plugs on the Hyperdeck. I checked with a multimeter and it seems to be OK though.

Is there a setting on the Hyperdeck I have overlooked, or this one possibly defective as well?

Looking for Fairly OddParents cels and production art; will buy

Hi, I am a big collector of FOP memorabilia and production material, and I'm looking to acquire cels (from the shorts, of course) and other production art like drawings, storyboards, etc. I obviously watch eBay like a hawk with saved searches and know most of the sellers that have inventory but decided to post on other forums to see if there's any chance of networking with other collectors that may be willing to sell, estates, or even people who have worked on the show (I did actually once buy a FOP cel from someone who DID work on the show, I didn't know until I saw the name on the package!)

I think I got into the "game" pretty late, I got my first FOP cel in 2020 and really started collecting in 2023. I've managed to get some nice cels, other drawings and even an original background, plus having a few signed by the voice actors. It's been fun but I feel like I "missed" when the cels were easy to find and get around 2003-2004 when you could buy them directly from Nickelodeon.

Does anyone have any advice? Maybe attend comic cons that might have vendors and potential sellers I could network with? Is "networking" even a thing? Thanks for any help in advance.

Scanning slides with existing carousel projector?

Hi, I'm a bit new to this. My grandmother's family took a lot of slides and they're all in carousel boxes. I want to scan them using my new Sony A7 IV. Can I modify this existing slide projector to scan them so I can save some money by using equipment I already have? It's definitely using some kind of incandescent bulb because it gets really hot. However, it still works pretty well as a slide projector and the images from it are very sharp and the colors are excellent. What lens will I need for the Sony? I just have the standard kit lens (24-70mm f/3.5-5.6)

Bought a used a7 IV off eBay, has a fingerprint on the sensor. What to do?

It doesn't look damaged. Just like somebody accidentally touched it. I don't know if I should return it. Other than that it looks perfectly fine and there's nothing wrong with it. I'm not sure how to clean the sensor so I want to make sure I don't damage it.

What's the most infamous building where lots of people have murdered inside (or similar event on the same scale), but still stands to this day and hasn't been torn down?

I would have to say Dean Corll's storage shed in Houston, TX. They found 17 of his victims there buried under the dirt floor. The photos from the shed are online and I've seen pictures of the actual bodies. I also read it was hell trying to dig out all the skeletons and remains, and they even found the served genitals of one of his victims in a bag. Despite this happening back in 1973 the shed is still standing to this day and being used. They did put in a concrete floor since but it still exists.

I know Sandy Hook was torn down after the shooting, as well as the building where the Parkland shooting happened. Maybe Norris Hall at Virginia Tech? What else other than mass shootings?

Deinterlacing with MPC-BE and madVR?

Hi, I'm dealing with some interlaced MPEG-2 (XDCAM EX 35) video from a Sony PMW-EX3 (and I also deal with other types of interlaced footage like DV and DVD), and madVR isn't deinterlacing it at all. I have to change the renderer to MPC Video Renderer to get it to deinterlace. Does madVR support deinterlacing or not?

What would it feel like to have an icepick driven though your ears and brain?

When reading about the Toolbox Killers, they drove an icepick though the head of one of their victims, going into one ear, through the brain, and out the other ear. There's a crime scene picture of the skill they recovered (the bodies were found months after the murders and were just bones)

Apparently it didn't instantly kill her because they had to strangle her afterwards. My question is what did it probably feel like before they strangled her? Did she instantly become like a vegetable or something before they strangled her? Or is it likely she died instantly from the icepick and they just strangled her to make sure she was dead? Could she have survived and just been a vegetable for the rest of her life?

What is happening with this Certified Mail?

https://preview.redd.it/h39u26gaa99h1.png?width=1290&format=png&auto=webp&s=1bafcf740492421db1ab126b3c9e260b6f402bc9

Hi, I sent Certified Mail with a signature required to someone in Rhode Island, and USPS tried to deliver it on June 18th, but the tracking says "No Access to Delivery Location". I assume nobody was there and they left PS Form 3849? It says they would deliver on the next business day (June 19th) but it doesn't seem like they did. Will it be returned to me as undeliverable?

Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle 2 - Red light on SSD

Hello, I bought a used HyperDeck Shuttle 2 from MPB. It will be used with my PMW-EX3 to record in ProResHQ 4:2:2. I've already set the HyperDeck up on my PC using a USB cable.

However, I can not get it to work with any SSD. I have tried three so far, a Crucial BX100 240GB, a SanDisk 64GB (would never use a 64GB SSD but just had one on hand and had to test), and just now a Transcend SSD420 512GB. They just cause the red light to stay on forever. And none of the buttons respond, I can't even try to make a recording or anything.

I've formatted every SSD I've tried as an GPT partition table, with a single exFAT partition. That's what the manual says to do. But it doesn't fix anything.

How do I find out if I have a defective HyperDeck or just the wrong SSD? I'm tempted to buy an Samsung 870 EVO as my next troubleshooting step since it's on the "approved" SSD list from BlackMagic. I would figure at least that it would at least TRY to make a recording on any SSD instead of just failing to do anything. Which makes me think it could be a defective unit.
