King Bear was surrendered in late-July because his senior owner is unwell and unable to care for him… 🥲

He was a beloved neighborhood dog (I’ve attached photos of messages from previous neighbors of King Bear). The community is devastated to see him at-risk.

He is house-trained, good on/ off leash, loving, sweet, super cute, and playful. He is friendly with strangers, kids, and dogs (successfully lived with children and dogs previously). He is frequently described as a “couch-potato” by those who know him.

King Bear loves people and enjoys a good bath!

THE GOOD NEWS:

The adorable American Staffordshire Terrier-mix was found in a park and brought into NYCACC in late-June.

He is listed due to high stress and toy-fixation behaviors in the shelter environment (details listed below).

Rufferee is social, cute, affectionate, excitable, energetic, and healthy!

The good boy earned the 2nd best behavior rating during his medical exam… 🦴

While he is noted to be highly social, energetic, and affectionate with handlers during outdoor yard time, the confined space and noise of the facility have caused him severe anxiety.

Low Arousal Threshold: In the care center, he becomes easily overwhelmed. During one incident where he became highly over-excited trying to get into a toy storage bin, medical staff stepped in to check on and redirect him; he responded by lunging at their hand in an attempt to resource-guard.

Toy Fixation & Resource Guarding: Rufferee has an intense obsession with toys (like stuffies and tennis balls). He exhibits resource guarding behaviors in the shelter, including freezing, becoming tense, hovering over, and body-blocking his toys. This fixation also makes him very difficult to redirect on walks if he spots random toys.

Severe Shelter Anxiety: His official logs note that he shows clear physical signs of terror and confusion inside the building, such as trembling like a leaf. In one documented instance, he pulled himself into the supply area, tried to climb into a linen bin to hide, and then suffered an anxiety-induced collapse onto the floor out of sheer mental exhaustion and confusion.

This adorable boy is another dog whose previous owner had no time for him and hence was surrendered to NYCACC.

Lowkey Mischief is described as sweet, cuddly, well-behaved, housetrained, energetic, and knows cutes. He is friendly with strangers, and playful with kids and cats.

He loves treats and toys… 🧸

Decatur came to the shelter in late-July because his owner passed away and was brought in by police… 💔

This adorable senior is in-trouble for biting his kennel walls and not focusing/ “freezing” when he sees some dogs (though he’s done fine in playgroups).

Decatur is sweet, a sensitive soul, soft, eager for attention, adoptable, solid on-leash, and neutral (but curious) when passing strangers.

This boy just needs a safe place to land after the passing of his owner! Can you help?! 🛟

Apple Bloom was found after two weeks alone in an abandoned apartment. Her previous “family” was evicted and she was brought to the shelter in late-July.

She arrived nervous with her tail tucked between her legs, but she has since been improving. She has shown a sweet and brave side, eagerly taking chicken jerky from volunteers and even jumping into a pool. She has recently made progress with her handlers, becoming easier to leash and taking treats.

She is super cute (as you can see), engaging, is neutral in playgroups, and is healthy.

Baby Blue is looking for a home. He’s my foster. He was taken to ACC Queens and abandoned by his family. I’ve only had him for a week and he is just the sweetest guy. My chihuahua is ten time more aggressive. He knows how to do a lot of things like sleep on a pillow correctly. He isn’t destructive or aggressive at all. He is super cuddly and good with small dogs. He just wants to play all of the time and/or cuddle. He’s a very very good dog. He was placed on the euthanasia list because he was fearful but who wouldn’t be when you’re suddenly in a shelter? If you’re interested in adopting, dm me and I’ll put you in touch with the rescue that I got him through. He’s a good boy and deserves a good home. Lastly, he was listed as Buttons Blue but apparently hates that name so we just call him Baby Blue or Blue.

Heartbreaking Update: Flash was euthanized and sent to the rainbow bridge this morning by NYCACC.

I truly think we could’ve found him a home but he wasn’t given enough time. They just put him on the list yesterday so I thought he had more time.

But thank you all for sending love and support to him in his final hours, even if it was from afar.

I hope he knows that people cared about him and that he was loved.

Flash was dropped off at a police precinct and was brought into the shelter in late-June. He came in wounded and scared but has since warmed up with familiar staff.

He’s still somewhat timid but is wiggly, cute, young & engaging. He’s shy with strangers and is nervous but willing to greet dogs.

Flash (ID #258526) is on the at-risk list due to shelter-induced fear and behavioral escalation (leash biting, jumping up)
caused by the stress of kennel confinement. While he is physically healthy, the high-pressure shelter environment has impacted his behavior.

The Good News:
Volunteer and staff notes highlight that Flash is a completely different dog when he gets away from the noisy kennel hallways. In low-stress office spaces and the outdoor play yard, he becomes social, wiggly, playful, and actively seeks out belly rubs and attention from humans. He simply cannot cope with concrete cage environments and needs an experienced foster or rescue to help him decompress.

He is just over 35 lbs. Bluey was left abandoned tied to fence in the Bronx in early-July and was brought in.

Bluey is listed for being afraid/ tail-tucked, looks for exits & very nervous.

Petite, young, neutered & healthy.

Bluey is reported to be scared and has not been acclimating well to the shelter kennel environment, but advocates note that fear is not aggression.

It’s the LAST CALL for 3-y/o Seven, now out of chances & under kill command!

Seven (just under 25 lbs) was found as a stray and kept for 3 weeks by finder before surrendering him in early-June because he got in a conflict with resident dog… 🤧

He is cute and petite, bouncy, wiggly, super fun, and neutered.

He earned the 2nd best behavior rating, is friendly with strangers, but is looking to be a solo pet in the home.
