Some Oscar buzzy movies I saw in July:

• The Odyssey (duh)
• The Invite (Director, writing, maybe actors?)
• Minions (Animation)
• Next week is Spiderman (probably won't get anything - but visual effects? I dunno)

I feel like there's nothing coming out this week, though. I'm also looking through the Indie theaters, but I'm not finding anything cross-referenced with my lists.

Don't get me wrong, I see more than Oscar-buzzy movies, but it's apt for this sub. (I also watched the newest Evil Dead..)

Anything coming out this week that should be on my radar? (Honestly, even if it's not Oscar-buzzy- just something that might be good.)

I'm currently reading a book where the main character has DID. (It's a book from the 1950s, so I believe back then it was known as Multiple Personality Disorder.) - I know the media widely exaggerates it in books and movies - but does it come close? Are there distinctly named personalities? Are they very different? What are the main aspects?

I've tried googling articles but they're so overwritten and some are kind of vague.

I feel like the short story, The Lottery is every schoolkid's introduction to Shirley Jackson. It's so memorable, decades later it has such influence on my own writing and tastes in movies & books. So whhhyy did I wait so long to read her other novels?

At least a decade ago, I read The Haunting of Hillhouse and it remains one of my favorite books of all times. I've read it several times since. Nell's inner monologue is so relatable and interesting. She's so good at subtle scares that creep under your skin. I also love the '60s movie adaptation and Mike Flanagan's series is one of my favorite TV shows of all time.

I've only recently, within the last couple of years), ventured into her other novels. I love each and every one. Some are so weird: The Sundial, & some so sadly psychological: Hangsaman. Not all are pure horror. I've adapted The Road Through the Wall (in my head only) into a futuristic sci-fi film set on another planet about Aliens capturing humans and forcing them to live a typical 1950s existence in order to teach their aliens kids how to adapt and inevitably invade Earth. (This is not at all what the book is about, but it is canon in my head...)

I've only got 2 left: I'm halfway through The Bird's Nest. I tend to read most at lunchtime during work, and I've had so much trouble putting this one down to get back to work. The only one I haven't read yet is We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I saw the movie years ago without realizing it was based on a Shirley Jackson novel. I didn't like the movie, so I put it off for a while, but I will eventually read it.

It's a shame she died so young. I know there was way more in her.

There are plenty of films that take places in the 19th & 18th centuries Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Favourite, but what about earlier? The only super early one I can think of is Alexander which takes places in the 300s BC. Are there any others around that time or even earlier?

What are your favorite period pieces that have a queer romance? (Maybe 19th century and before?)

I’ve been trying to get her to watch Dark for years, but since the pandemic, she's had a hard time concentrating on shows that need...well...concentration. But after constantly referencing it, I finally broke her down. She had nothing to do this weekend so she decided to start it. She started texting me things about the show and I made her promise to at least pause the show if she was going to text me, and she did promise that she'd fully pay attention. (I also gave her the website so she could keep track of characters.)

We were just on the phone for about an hour so she can tell me all her speculations and theories, genuinely excited, after only about 6 episodes. And I had to bite my tongue most of the time and just let her talk.

She's very smart and likes to find themes and motifs. One thing she pointed out, which never occurred to me was a non-spoilery motif - which is the use of lipstick on the show: putting it on, smearing it off, even Elizabeth's theft of it from Franziska. It doesn't necessarily mean anything significant, but it's still a cool thing to notice. I look forward to more of that from her.
