So Close...So Close...

So there I am, playing FF7 Remake. My 10 year old son walks by

Son: woah...what are you playing?

Me: Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Son: dude... This looks so cool. That's the most beautiful animation I have ever seen

Me: ya it's pretty awesome (trying to keep it casual). Do you... Wanna play?

Son: Ya!

Me: Sweet, let me finish this spot and I'll get you set up

I just walked into a fight that I needed to finish before I could turn it off.

Son: oh... This looks kinda hard. No worries dad I'll play when I'm older

Me: no no no it's cool, there's an easy mode I'll get you set up!

Son: it's okay dad, I don't want to play

Been sad all day over this ha ha one day he'll play I'm sure, but I felt like an awesome father son moment just slipped through my fingers

Just Finished The 1982 Film and I loved it. Which omnibus should I read?

Basically the title. I know the movie isn't a great representation of Conan and his story, but I absolutely loved the movie. I wanna pick up an omnibus and just start reading. What should I grab?

Why do I love the idea of having no plans, but get anxious when it actually happens?

So one of my favorite things to hear from my wife is 'We have no plans this weekend'. Fills me with joy. We get to hang around the house, read, play video games, and my kids get some downtime as well, it's great.

Around 2-6 though on those weekends where we have nothing planned, I get incredibly anxious, like I'm wasting the day. I'll sit down and read, and be enjoying the story, but there is always this itch in the back of my head saying 'hey, you should get out of the house and do something that's actually good.' it's like I value outdoor activities more than indoors activities, but I love the idea of being inside and drag my feet if I have to leave the house. It's quite frustrating.

Anybody else feel this way? Any tips on how to get through it?

Does anyone know the song that is playing in this scene?

Every time I watch this scene, I'm reminded that I still don't know if there is a full version of this song or not cause I love the vibe of it

Wife wants to start a podcast with me, I need it to be low overhead for her

So one my wife and I's favorite thing to do is to yell at the TV while we watch shows like Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, shows like that. Well last night she said she would love to do a podcast where we do sort of a watch and react type show (it's mostly for fun for us, I don't think we're going to go viral or anything).

I'm just wondering what would be the best set up to do this with very little overhead. She's not gonna want to go to a sound booth or prep a script. I want to be able to sit on the couch, turn on the mic, hot play, and just go. any tips to make this work? I think it will be mostly just a really fun bonding moment for her and I

Just picked up Storyfold Wildwoods for $20 on a whim. Good reviews? Good experience?

Odyssey, Myths, and Voyages

My brothers and I are getting ready to see The Odyssey in July, so we want to watch a bunch of movies around that theme. Doesn't have to be movies that are different telling of the Odyssey, though O Brother Where Art thou is on my list already.

I'm looking for movies that are based around a Myth/Legend, that are particularly focused on going on some kind of journey

What were some of the most impactful TV shows when you were around 10 years old?

Trying to expand my son's horizons when it comes to what he watches so I was thinking of presenting a couple TV shows we can watch this summer. Any good suggestions?

Looking for a better method to record, Discord isn't cutting it

Situation: 3 hosts, 3 different locations. Episodes are 1.5 hours to 2 hours of recording time. Audio only podcast - but looking to switch to Video sometime in the near future.

We have been using Discord and Craigbot to record our podcast and it's been working for a while but we have been running into Internet issues lately that have led to some choppy audio or disconnects.

My thought is that we can still do the podcast via Discord, maybe use Craig as a back up, but thinking we can record locally with Audacity and then upload the files so that one of our hosts can edit the episode.

Is there a better option? Preferably free.

Is it pretty normal for a family to parallel play most weekends?

Family - Me (34M), wife (36F), Son (M10), daughter (F8)

So a typical thing that happens in my family is I'll ask my wife what plans we have this weekend. She says 'Nothing', and we both cheer in excitement.

What this leads to often is we spend Saturday getting the house cleaned up, finish up any projects, and maybe go out to the park for an hour or so.

Sundays are usually our 'Choll day' and typically our whole day consists of us working on our personal projects or engaging in our hobbies. For instance right now - we're all in the living room and I'm playing a game on my PC, my wife is working on her novel, my son is playing Minecraft, and my daughter is reading a book. We do this for 6 hours out of the day, waiting up hobbies frequently, and we often will pop our heads up and make a comment of what we're working on. But then it's back to our hobbies.

I often worry about getting my kids getting out or doing more family based activities, but everyone seems really happy with this so I'm wondering if maybe I'm just judging myself too harshly, or maybe I'm worrying over nothing.

Do other families do this?

Any Tips on Longplay, No commentary play through?

I've played with the idea of making some Let's Play videos but I've just concluded that I just don't have the time to sit down, play a game for a couple hours, and commentate while doing it.

I still have this itch to do something though. So I was thinking of just recording myself playing the game, taking pauses when I need to for kids and such, and stitching it all together.

I'm just wondering if there is anything I should be aware of when doing this. Should the vibe be 'im playing this with a plan' or should it have the vibe of 'I 'm playing this for the first time?

Thanks for the feedback :)

Addon Maker is no longer allowing my son to make Nextbots

Incoming parent here who doesn't play Minecraft :)

So my special needs son loves to play Minecraft and he also likes to create his own Nextbots which he spawns in his own worlds - he likes to make escape rooms and if you don't pick the right door a Nextbots comes out and attacks you.

He would make these Nextbots with Addon Maker by Joycraft studios. In the past week or so he would input all the same things, add his photo, etc but when he goes to hit the checkmark in the top right corner nothing happens.

At first I thought his iPad storage was full so I cleaned it out but nothing changed. Then I wondered if the image he used was too big, but when I go to edit it on Addon Maker the size of it doesn't matter. I went on YouTube and watched some people's tutorial on how to make Nextbots in Minecraft, followed them to the best I could, but still nothing changed.

Any ideas or tips?

Edit: in terms of the version he's using, I think it would be titled the Bedrock edition? It's just the one you download from the Apple Store

Movies that heavily feature a synthisizer in the soundtrack

My brothers and I pick a theme every month and try and watch as many movies based around that theme. My older brother picked the theme of 'Forgive ne father, for I have Sinthed". And he explained that it's movies that really focus on that synthesizer sound.

This is not my area of expertise so help me out!

Should I make Longform Videos and create Shorts from it, or create Shorts and the. Combine them for Longform Videos?

Starting a YouTube channel where I'm starting out simple and just summarizing each issue of a comic series. Shooting to expand and do reviews, read alongs, and deep dives.

The title is my question - when putting up panels of comic books I can line them up so they look nice and clean in a long form video, but then they look too zoomed in for a short. If I line it up for a short it doesn't fill up the screen for Longform content.

Also, should I be trying to fill in the empty space in the video? I have a looping, slightly blurred background, but often the left and right side are empty space with the panel I'm focusing on in the middle of the screen. Should I try and fill in the whole space or is it fine to leave it empty? .

So I usually don't talk about finances so this is a bit of a vulnerable moment for me but I've just been down in the dumps, feeling like I'm behind in life so looking for either a pat on the back or just a little guidance.

I work as one of the managers for a family mobile car detailing company. Dad still runs it but hopefully will step back sometime soon and hand it over to me and my older brother.

I make 65k a year steadily, sometimes that can jump to 70k if we get some big insurance jobs.

I also have two special needs kids, and they each get about $950 a month from social security. So all in all I'd say I make about 73k a year.

Wife and I own a house, purchased it in 2019 for $395k at 3.5%. We're paying $2200 a month for the mortgage.

In terms of debt we have about 2k in debt another 4k on a personal loan.

We own both our cars right out

We have about 5k in savings. But we don't have anything saved for retirement. Something I know that I need to change, I guess I'm just worried that paying into that monthly is gonna mess up our day to day, feel like I can't afford it.

Wife and I are in our mid thirties, with a 8 and a 10 year old and love outside of the Portland Oregon area. My disabled father in law also lives with us and will mostly likely do so until he passes away.

Am I screwed? Am I doing okay? Any nudge?

What brought this up is my brother in law is heavily invested into Crypto and my older brother dabbles in it. I never had the urge to do that, or felt like I had the money to do it.
