Unsolicited Advice / Comments after job loss and death

I lost my nonprofit job of 8 years earlier this Spring since we ran out of funding for my project. It wasn't a surprise. Since my mom had stage IV, I decided to be pickier while job searching and also spend more time with her in my home state. She started declining suddenly - fortunately I had been with her a week.

I appreciate the outpouring of support after her passing. I've gotten some unsolicited advice and strange comments though. For example, my Uncle sees me at the visitation and goes "big year". I go "not the best" and then he asks me if my old organization is hiring. Lol the answer is no, but it has financial problems and is disorganized, so why would I wanna go back there. Also some people have given me unsolicited career advice even if I told them of my plans to take time off and travel some. I don't think they understand the grieving process. Please be more sensitive to people who have lost a family member as well as a job. The best thing is to listen first and see how they would like to be supported.

Power Issues?

Anyone else experiencing power issues? House in Braeloch neighborhood and the lights started flickering and AC reset itself. Trying to figure out if it is just our house or a larger issue.

News travels fast even if you've left the org

Just a reminder that news travels fast and people talk about you even after you leave. I was let go after my project funding ran out earlier this year. I'm still friends with a few of my old coworkers on social media. They found out that my mom had passed. The next day one of old coworkers that I went on a date with after I left (we are not connected on social media) reached out asking how I was. He probably heard people talking about me and maybe didn't know exactly what had happened.

In good news, in some ways I don't have a job right now. My old organization has a lot of issues and I was confused what was going to happen for three months and let go suddenly. At least I was able to spend more time with my mom before she passed (she lived out of state). Also when my dad passed, it was weird to go back to the office after 2 weeks. People sometimes were awkward around me and didn't know what to say. I'm relieved I also didn't find a new job yet since I may not have any leave.

How to explain you are able to take time off and travel?

This year hasn't been going the best. I recently lost my nonprofit job in Washington, DC and the job market isn't very good. My mom has terminal cancer and isn't doing well. She may only have a few months left at most. I'm thinking that after she passes I may want to take some time off and travel. I know I am lucky and privileged to have the resources to do this.

Just wondering how if anyone else has been able to travel and explain this to friends without feeling like you are bragging or them becoming jealous? I think a lot of my worries come from that after my dad passed away in 2024, I told a friend at that a time I may buy a condo and also could take time off from work and she said something strange comments that I think were out of jealousy. I ended up ending the friendship over comments she said to me on another topic. I know I'm making this decision because I feel like it is the best for my situation, but people definitely don't understand that and aren't always supportive. Anyone else experience anything similar?

Getting allergy shots administered while traveling?

I'm visiting another state while doing allergy shots every week. My allergist gave me my serum and said I could get it administered from an urgent care. I tried one and they don't do them because they didn't prescribe it. Has anyone had to do this before and had success? Should I try other urgent care, primary care, or allergists? I can see the liability concerns.

Where to get allergy shots administered with serum from another practice

I'm visiting from out of state and doing allergy shots every week. My allergist gave me my serum and said I could get it administered from an urgent care. I tried UNC Urgent Care and they don't do them because they didn't prescribe it. Before I call other urgent care, primary care, and allergists, anyone have suggestions?

Oil of Oregano & Serrapeptase or Cyclosporiasis

Did anyone take oil of oregano and serrapeptase and have stomach upset- mainly cramps and explosive diarrhea? I chose today to start both for confirmed SIBO treatment. I had an oil oregano capsule during lunch and felt fine and then had a serrapeptase capsule 3 hours after lunch. Around 8 pm I started getting a stomach ache and bad diarrhea. This has continued on and off like 3 hrs. Problem is I know these are also the symptoms of cyclosporiasis that is going on in the US... I would find it strange that I would happen to have symptoms on the same day I started these new supplements though.

Cat outside a travel center

Saw this cat while I happened to be driving with my cat through the state. I had food and poor thing was so hungry. Very friendly kitty. I've contacted several local rescues who can hopefully try to pick him or her up.

Don't be afraid to push for SIBO test

I've had GI symptoms off and on for several years (bloating, pain, diarrhea, and constipation). I was thinking that it could be IBS or maybe endometriosis too (I definitely have an ovarian endometrioma). I've done a mix of digestive enzymes, IB Guard, antacids, pepto bismal. Low FODMAP and atrantil seemed to help the most. My GI doctor didn't mention SIBO testing, but I asked about it. She said something like " a lot of people would have that and it requires a special diet." I was like "that's fine."

Turna out my lactulose breath test is positive for both hydrogen-predominant SIBO and methane overgrowth (IMO)! Gonna discuss treatment options soon.

How to explain to friends that you are able to take a break from work?

34F, single. I recently lost my nonprofit job but I decided to take a break from work since my mom has stage IV cancer. I'm going to spend a month with her out of state this summer. My dad passed away a few years ago and inherited a little over a million $. So while my life has had a lot of stress in the past couple years, fortunately I don't have to worry about $ if I don't go crazy. My friends don't know that I have an inheritance, but I get the sense that some wonder how I'm able to be okay right now (including taking a trip after I lost my job). I don't want people too worry, but I don't want to brag either... I just say "I'm OK financially." I wonder if there is another way to explain it? I know I'm very lucky to be able to do this with the economy the way it is and living in an expensive city

I think a lot of my worries come from that last year I told a friend I may buy a condo and also could take time off from work and I think she became jealous and insecure. I ended up ending the friendship over comments she said to me on another topic. So maybe I'm just overworrying. Anyone else have to do deal with anything similar when they inherited money/ had good careers?

Has anyone been able to repair relationships with family member who has resentment and other issues, but refuses to get help

My brother 36M definitely has some unresolved issues with us siblings and maybe parents. It is coming out as resentment and obsession with how much he can inherit.

He has a bachelor's degree but didn't really figure out a career path and became a caregiver for my late dad and now my mom. My parents had $ but didn't want to hire caregivers - maybe some codependency issues.

The three of us other siblings all have good careers. I think he resents us for being able to work while our parents asked him to be a caregiver. Our Dad passed away a few years ago and each of us has inherited a good amount of $. Now my mom is sick and for some reason my mom told him he will inherit the family house worth maybe $1 million.

It is true that my brother is the caregiver for my mom, but he also doesn't pay rent and lives in a sibling's house. He even admits that he has some undiagnosed ADHD or something else, but doesn't want to get help for it. It seems his plan is just to live off his inheritance.

I think because of this he resents us siblings and is obsessed with how much $ he could aquire. I'm 35 and said how now at this age I don't think my career is as important too me. Not saying I don't want to work, but I want to focus on settling down. He goes "your master degree (that I got 9 years ago) was funded by the sale of the beach house our dad inherited." I don't think that's true, but I didn't understand how this was relevant...

He also resents my mom. I think this has gotten better, but he even blamed her on getting cancer recently!

But anyone have positive stories of people like this eventually getting help for their issues? I don't see how our relationship can improve if he keeps resenting us and not trying to understand where these feelings come from.

DAE stop caring so much about their career and wanted to focus on meeting someone + having kids?

35F... Single and my job recently ended due to funding. I have a Masters + have worked hard on national projects for the last 8 years... I'm also fortunate to be financially secure. I liked my job and I had good performance reviews, but it just ended since the funding dried up. Now since I'm job searching and also on dating apps, I realize I don't really want to focus so much on my career right now. I froze my eggs too, but I still feel like I want most of my energy to be focused on a long-term relationship and having kids in the next 5 years. It's not that I don't want to work, but I don't want to have to do another Masters or something else that will require a lot of training. Anyone else experience this?

35F- How do I explain to dates that I'm job searching, but financially secure?

35F in the US. Seeking advice on how to share to dates that I'm job searching. My project ended, but I'm okay with taking time off. I'm financially secure (inherited $), but don't want to share this inheritance info with dates. I kind of say "I'm job searching, but have time to find something good." How does this sound? Do you think I should try to split the dates on first dates? I just don't want to give the impression to guys that I would be financially reliant on them.

Does Anybody Else Have Elderly Relatives that Act Strange on Social Media?

Anyone else have elderly relatives that act strange (compared to how Millennials and Gen Z behave) on social media? My aunt is probably 85, and she knows how to use social media, but she uses a lot of it to watch your Instagram or Facebook stories and not actually post content or reply. But I found if I hide my stories because I only want some close friends to see it, then she'll try to find you on my other social media platforms. For example, I stopped posting on Instagram stories and then she found me on Threads. Then she told me the stuff she saw and even things like from the past (say 6 months ago) and I'm like, oh, I didn't realize she really read that.

She also sometimes sends me random things on Messenger that don't relate to my interests. For example clips from a TV show that I don't watch or words in French. Maybe these are accidental shares- not sure. If she also wanted to talk to me she could message or call, but she doesn't too much. Anyone else have similar experiences? What explains the lurking behavior?

Friends not Getting what it likes to have a parent with stage IV cancer

Just a rant. My friend is a good friend otherwise and means well. But I recently lost my job and since my mom has stage IV breast cancer, I'm going to spend time with her for a month this summer (out of state). We don't know how much time she has left and if I get a new job soon, I may not be able to spend as much time with her. She's on oxygen too and in a wheelchair and my sibling who is the main caregiver for her is burnt out. But my friend know a lot of these details and said "I hope you have a relaxing trip." I did go into more details and so she did probably realize why it won't be, but sigh some people really don't know what it is like to have a sick parent until you spell it out for them.

Guy near Dupont calling women idiot and ugly randomly

FYI I was walking on R St near 19th or 18th St today when another woman and I both passed a man and he randomly goes "idiot." Then I asked her to confirm what he said and he yells "ugly too." We are both Asian, so not sure if it was racially motivated.. He was white, blue eyes, maybe 40s, red shirt, and shaved head or balding hairline.

Do you have friends that give bad advice?

I went on a date with someone who is single and has a 3 yr old daughter. I recently lost my job, but am job searching, have savings, and am gonna go out of town for a month soon. The guy sometimes needs someone to watch his daughter. My friend said I should be his daughter's nanny. To me that's such a bad idea to mix business with pleasure. And if you break up you have to end it suddenly which may be hard if the child is attached to you.

Anyone else have friends who give bad advice?
