Stan Wawrinka bids an emotional farewell to Gstaad, 23 years after his ATP journey began there
Stan Wawrinka received an emotional farewell at the Swiss Open Gstaad, the tournament where his ATP Tour journey began in 2003. The 41-year-old battled Portugal’s Jaime Faria for two hours and 38 minutes in his final appearance at the event. Wawrinka won the opening set and struck 16 aces, but Faria recovered to claim a 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-4 victory.
After the match, the home crowd gave Wawrinka a long standing ovation as Swiss flags filled the arena, while tournament organizers presented him with custom “Stan the Man” skis during the farewell ceremony. Wawrinka made 14 appearances in Gstaad and won the doubles title with Dominic Stricker in 2023, although he never captured the singles championship. The three-time Grand Slam champion will continue competing before retiring at the end of the 2026 season.
