Duggars and the environment

I was watching cheaper by the Duggars, and they do a few money saving things that are actually good for the planet. But they also don’t do that much and their carbon footprint must be huge.

they do a few things right….

  1. They buy used. I believe they have used furniture, used clothes, used shoes, used decorations, used cookware (pots, pans, cooking utensils), towels, sheets, bedding, toys, books, appliances and electronics.

  2. They have a vegetable garden (although I only ever heard of this once) so I don’t know If this was only for one or two seasons.

  3. they use bar soap- this is very minor but it does save on plastic and it takes less emissions to transport and create bar soap over liquid. If they have a bar of soap for every sink, and if they use soap to clean themselves in the shower this would actually save quite a bit of plastic.

  4. they use a wood stove to heat their home- this is actually a pretty big one.

  5. homemade laundry detergent- this is a pretty big plastic saver for them since they would go through so many plastic tubs of detergent. It also saves on transportation emissions of using liquid detergent. They probably save like 36 tubs of laundry detergent a year by doing this.

  6. They repair their stuff

  7. shorter showers - this saves on heating emissions, pumping the water out, and saves on water .

  8. washing their laundry in cold water. (This saves in about 90% of emissions on washing their laundry. It also makes the laundry last longer and better for getting stains out )

  9. reuse tissue paper and gift bags - this is minor, but it is something especially with that many people.

  10. reuse decorations for celebrations. - this is minor, but it is something , especially for how many celebrations they have.

  11. making their own cleaning supplies: this would cut down on their plastic footprint.

stuff they do wrong:

  1. disposable plates and cups for every meal. Yikes that’s an environmental disaster.

  2. Flying lots- not til later seasons but yeah. that’s a big footprint!

  3. eating a lot of ultra processed food- this has a significantly higher environmental footprint than cooking from scratch.

  4. Eating a lot of meat- in their defence they do seem to eat a little lower on the food chain by eating turkey and chicken a lot. But they also eat a lot of beef.

  5. Disposable diapers/ feminine hygiene product:I’m surprised they never made pre folds, or pads from old worn out t-shirts.

  6. no renewables for electricity (I’m Surprised they didn’t put some solar panels on their roof and sell back to the grid (this seems up Jim bobs alley) .)

  7. having a shit ton of kids.

  8. Gas guzzling vehicles: but besides not having kids what else are they supposed to do?

My take on Carmela

Carmela was stuck and she was trying to convince herself and everyone around her that she wasn’t.

Carmela made a bad decision as a teenager, and then was stuck with that decision.

Was Carmela financially abused? Yes. She had access to a joint account for household expenses and that’s it.

was Carmela in an abusive relationship? Yes. Even though Tony never physically beat Carmela, he was emotionally, psychologically and financially abusive. She also knew if she left he would make her life hell.

Everyone keeps saying Carmela should leave, but she has no education. She has no skills beyond domestic skills which are poorly paid. She has no access to money.

Even if she got a job, how much could she make? could she support herself and AJ? she tried to get money with the spec house and then learned she is not as smart as she thought she was which I don’t believe she thought she was that smart to begin with. I truly believe a lot of her “airs“ are an act.

if she divorces Tony she gets nothing because all of his money is made illegal, and Tony has access to way more resources than Carmela does.

She also feels guilty about staying married to Tony so she burries herself in religion as an excuse to herself about why she can’t leave. She becomes pious so she can accept cognitive dissonance as her own. “Divorce is wrong.” she also doesn’t want her kids to grow up in a “broken home.”

She lies To herself and says Tony loves her, so she feels humiliated that Tony can’t stay faithful to her. It reminds her that Tony doesn’t even love her. She is ok with staying married to him as long as he is discreet.

is she with Tony for the money? Yes and no. I believe she was initially attracted to Tony because of his power. She became accosted to a financially privileged life. she is financially abused and would have nothing if she left. She is leaning into the best part of her situation. She figures if she is selling her soul, she might as well enjoy the perks.

she knows she isn't that smart, she knows she isn’t that entrepreneurial, she has no real friends, and her family wouldn’t be that supportive if she left. she knows a divorce would be ugly and painful for everyone involved, and she is in an abusive relationship. She doesn’t want her kids to grow yo in a broken home in poverty.

She doesn’t want everyone else to know what she knows so she pretends this is what she wants.

Ecological benefits of bulk shopping

Buying in bulk CAN be better for the planet… if you do it this way….

  1. buy stuff in bigger packaging

I bought a 5 gallon pail of powder laundry detergent 3 years ago . it’s good for 1100 loads. this is less packaging, and it lowers emissions on transporting a bunch of smaller containers every couple months or so because it has lasted me years now. So there are transportation savings on both ends. one on my end, and the other on the factory to the stores end.

  1. if you buy from the bulk bins/ refilleries and bring your own containers.

I bring my reusable produce bags to the grocery store and fill what I need. When I get home I empty them out and fill my reused glass jars and Tupperware containers. I label them. this cuts down on packaging and is more sustainable.

I have a bottle of body wash I keep in my shower for guests. I have gone to the refillery and refilled that container twice now. So in this way I save on packaging and it’s more sustainable. (I use a bar of soap for my personal use.)

Now my question is…. is buying from the bulk section at a grocery store automatically more sustainable than buying a package of the same thing? If I use a plastic bag provided by the grocery store am I doing less harm Than just buying a pre packaged bag of lentils?

yes it is for me, because I save those plastic bags from the grocery store for my sister who uses them as dog poop bags. the pre filled bags are made of a different plastic and are harder to reuse.

but if you don’t bring your own containers or bags or reuse the bulk bags as dog poop bags, do you really save on waste just because you went to the bulk bin aisle?

Is it more sustainable just because it is the bulk foods aisle?

I think it’s safe to say having this many kids is a bad idea

I know people had bogger families in the past and things worked out. (though 19 is extreme, even for the past.)

But they didn’t have a choice in the past. this is like comparing parents in poverty to van life parents.

neither situation is ideal, but one is a choice the other is a consequence of things beyond your control. One you k with what you got, and another is adding more fuel to the fire.

I won’t judge parents in poverty unless they keep having more kids.

anyways 2 of their kids are in jail for sexual deviancy out of 19. if 10% if your children are in jail, those aren’t great stats. If 2 other children wrote a tell all that means 30% of your children didn’t have great childhoods.

Michelle Duggar always like to quite mother Theresa “saying there are too many children is like saying there are too many flowers.” You can have too many flowers, if you can’t take care of all your flowers and same goes for kids.

Mother Theresa wasn’t a parent, or a gardener and didn’t have to take care of children or Flowers. So maybe going by her quote isn’t a great idea. It’s nice to enjoy someone elses children or someone else’s flowers, but they are both work. Every parent/gardener should know their limits.

Those are the ones we know about. There might be more predators in this family.

In the summer I change my sheets once every 2 days

if I don’t, it feels damp to the touch.

I love clean sheets, but sometimes it feels like a lot and then I can’t sleep if I don’t change them.

I don’t have pets, and I am single. I should be able to get away with changing them once every 2 weeks, but nope. I have to change them every 2 days. Sometimes every day.

I have been thinking of getting a set of linen sheets, but they are so expensive. what’s anyone tried them? Are they worth it?

Personal changes

I know everyone says personal changes don’t make a difference, but I disagree.

I would love to hear some of your personal changes….

mine have been….

  1. switched my power to renewables.
  2. I buy renewable energy certificates on top of this.
  3. I buy renewable thermal certificates.
  4. I don’t have a car and I mainly use public transportation with an occasional uber.
  5. I buy a lot of my “new stuff“ used. I have used dishes, cookware, most of my small appliances, some used furniture, some used electronics, most of my clothes are used
  6. I compost
  7. I have very little food waste. I pack up all my leftovers and out them in containers and freeze them. I meal plan.
  8. I am a flexitarian who doesn’t eat beef or pork anymore. (I do still eat cheese, and I am trying to cut this down. Shame on me.)
  9. I recycle
  10. I cut down my plastic usage by…I use a steam mop with a reusable head,

I have a 5galleon pail of 1100 loads of powder laundry detergent. (I have had this for 3 years I have another 2 left.)

I buy tablets and refill my cleaning agent containers. I do this for dish soap, alll purpose cleaner and window cleaner

shampoo, conditioner bars, hand soap/ body wash bars

stain remover solid bar

I make my own popsicles

i don’t buy bottled water or pop.

I buy powder dishwasher detergent in tablets

safety razor,

toothbrush where I replace the head/compostsble floss

i reuse plastic bags

I cut my waste down at the grocery store by like 40to 50%. I get stuff in bulk and fill my own cloth bags, (produce bags do the trick ) (Oats, barley, hemp hearts, chia seeds, lentils, beans, rice, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, tea, nuts, chocolate chips, (I come home and fill them in reused glass jars, or Tupperware containers and label them.)

I buy the biggest bags of frozen fruit and vegetables, ( I reuse these bags. I save them for dog poop bags, litter bags and freezer bags (they re-seal) ) I buy fresh fruit and vegetables without plastic bags, I use my own cloth (produce bags) for mushrooms. I di not buy pre shredded cheese or slices , I buy the blocks and shred it/slice myself. it saves in packaging. If I do buy shrimp I buy it behind the meat counter and bring my own tin.) (I have stopped eating shrimp now) I get my olive oil bottles refilled at a different place. I make my own tomato sauce from canned tomatoes (which I recycle) I reuse the honey glass jars.

I make my own salad dressing, nutella, and nut butter.
(my sister makes jam, so I give her back the jars to reuse.)

I do have packaging for eggs (which I reuse, frozen fruit and vegetable (which I reuse) tinned tomatoes (which I recycle) and bread (I save these for my sister she reuses them as dog poop bags.) I have packaging for flour.(I use einkorn flour, so I buy the biggest bags I can) I have a herb garden.

i carry utensils around with me. So I don’t use plastic.

  1. I have a micro plastics filter on the back of my washing machine.

  2. I repair. Clothes, appliances, electronics, shoes.

  3. I sharpen all my blades including scissors and blender blades instead of buying new.

I14. I take 5 minute showers.

  1. I havent bought glaad bags or plastic wrap in years.

  2. I don’t have pets

  3. I no longer use spotify or YouTube. I do not use chat gbt. I still use google, email and Reddit.

  4. I wash all my laundry in cold water.

  5. I hang dry about half of my laundry.

  6. I save my egg cartons to be reused.

  7. I reuse gift bags and tissue paper

  8. I eat very few ultra processed foods. (Sometimes I will have a chocolate bar, or eat twizzlers around a campfire because YOLO)

  9. I don’t drink coffee.

  10. I reuse glass jars. I get my face cream, alcohol, and olive oil containers refilled.

  11. I use sulfate free soaps and detergents.

  12. I have energy efficient appliances and I use those lightbulbs.

##things I am ashamed of:

-I fly once a year.

Activism:

I write to companies suggesting more sustainable packaging.

-I write to my local politician about ideas to help fight climate change. My last one being that we need to make repair and sharpening services income tax deductible.

I feel so satisfied when I make a waste free meal

do you ever make a meal with zero waste and feel on top of the world?

You got most of your ingredients from the bulk section and you filled your own containers.

yu take out what you need, portion it out, prepare it, and then put everything back.

youre only left with the dishes which you put in the dishwasher or you wash them in the sink.

You threw nothing away. You recycled nothing and you composted nothing and you had a very satisfying/healthy meal.

I always find this very satisfactory. :)

oatmeal is the easiest one to do this with, but I have done it with other meals too like barley and lentil soup.

Ideas for sustainability

I find people will do the sustainable option when it is convenient for them. the rich will do things that are more sustainable if it’s considered more high brow.

my friend and I have been talking about ways to make things more sustainable or prestigious for people On a larger scale. If you can improve any of these ideas that would be amazing.

  1. have a “leave a bag take a bag” at local grocery stores. -this idea is kind of like ”leave a penny take a penny“ - have grocery stores wash donated reusable bags at the store, and leave them available at stores in case people forget their bags so they don’t have to buy new ones. If they prefer to buy new ones they still can. Participating stores would get a small tax deduction. Grocery delivery could have an option of taking old bags back to be reused for people without cars. Grocery delivery could also have an option for people wanting reused bags to be used instead of new ones.
  2. have more trains like the Orient expresss for rich people , and save air travel for crossing the ocean.
  3. have people drop off their glass jars with lids, somewhere in the city, companies can go pick up the glass jars, clean them out up to standards, and reuse them. Give businesses a small tax break for tsking their packaging back, cleaning it and reselling it.
  4. Have more passenger trains Instead of air or car travel.
  5. put a net or some kind of cover over outside garbage cans so the garbage can’t fly out.
  6. Have a mug/to go “library“at every coffee shop/fast food joint so you can pick one up and drop it off at your next location. Coffee shops/fast food joints can agree to run them through the dishwasher So they are clean. The cofffee shop /fast food would get a tax deduction for participating. Of course companies would have their disposable options too. This is more of a “we offer this service, for to go cups if it’s available. If it isn’t, and you didn’t bring a back up plan, that’s too bad. You can have a disposable to go cup. The disposable ones should be compostable.
  7. have a vase donation centre at your local florist.
  8. make repairs services tax deductible, (tailors( for clothing repairs) furniture repair, luggage repair, shoe repairs , small appliances, large appliances, electronics, and sharpening services, (knives, scissors, clippers, lawnmower blades, saw blades, pruning shears, blender blades, food processor blades, shears, skates, etc) I don’t think this should be for mechanics though.
  9. companies should be charged a large fine for planned obsolescence.
  10. furniture stores shouof have a “used furniture section“ where people drop off their old furniture , the company can treat every piece fir bedbugs, and re- poster, or the/finish the furniture And out it up for sale.
  11. give individuals/households/businesses chance to enter a cash prize if they prove how they lowered their waste eco footprint , by 30% in some way. Some examples could include: started composting, started recycling, bought carbon credits, switched to clesn energy, made a quilt/bathmat/ rug/bathmat from old clothes, only bought used clothing this year, brought own containers to fill bulk foods at the grocery store, cut down in food waste by freezing leftovers, started a herb garden, gave up a car and takes public transportation, switched to shampoo conditioner bars, switched to safety razor, uses tablets for cleaning supplies and reuses old containers etc. Indicidual cities and municipalities could do this. Have one for househoulds and one for businesses. It could be a cash prize of $15k. This would honestly pay for itself.
  12. put solar panels on public buildings.
  13. movie theatres could have reusable popcorn bowls. It would be optional whether to use them or not. people who use them would pay a small “fee” for washing the bowls If maybe $0.50. They could charge people on the number of cups of popcorn instead of filling up the bag.

any other ideas?

sustainable floss

-I know floss is probably the least of our environmental problems, but I bought some plant based biodegradable floss, which I do compost and I bought a tiny reusable floss pot, instead of the plastic disposable one.
I have been using it for a week now, and so far it hasn’t been bad, but I find it harder to take out if my teeth because it isn’t as waxy.

Its like in the the last things I have changed And I’m nervous about it. I hope I do t get cavities. It does feel good to throw my used floss in the compost bin though!

Doing the eco friendly thing

Sometimes doing the eco friendly thing is less work.

like using a dishwasher over washing by hand.

sometimes its more work…

like cleaning our your freezer and you could throw out your old food in a plastic bag and throw it out container and all. Or you could do the eco thing and open up the containers, compost the food inside, then washout and reuse the container, or wash out and recycle the packaging which includes flattening out the cardboard.

You could hang dry your laundry, instead of putting it all in the dryer. It is more work though.

Sometimes it sucks to be eco.

Pmos belly

I didn’t think mine was THAT bad, until my male friend (who has autism, so he is very honest) told me I wasn’t fat, and not to worry about my belly. He said this after I complained a little about gaining some weight, and I never mentioned my belly to him ever.

Also i was sucking in my belly, a bit and my 2 sisters saw, came over told me it looked like I lost weight and I looked absolutely beautiful.

I am about 10 lbs overweight from a healthy weight, i Was thinking if lipo. Has anyone done it? did it work?

I just can’t seem to get rid of this belly.

I’m sick of hearing about men’s mental health

they have the same resources as everyone else, they have 2 months dedicated to men’s mental health. I know they are used to special privileges. but do they think people give a shit about women’s mental health and they are really suffering more than everyone else? Yeah… no. But they cry and complain in “silence”

what else do they want? It’s called adulthood. No one cares. I say this as someone who has suffered depression from a brain tumour my whole life. you get therapy, the same ressources that I went to are available to them. It’s your responsibility to deal with your own mental health. Any time I say this to any man complaining about how opressed men are because no one cares about their mental health I get told that they dont care about my struggles.

I know idiot. That’s called being an adult. No one cares.

Bull frog power

Canadians,

I have signed up for bullfrog power and natural gas, (but you can do power alone.)

Basically for an extra fee they take what you use in the grid, and make sure they are creating that amount somewhere else in cheap energy. i live in an apartment do I pay less.

they have started a whole bunch of green power / heating initiatives.

https://bullfrogpower.com/choose-green-energy/?utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=cpc&utm\_campaign=Brand&utm\_term=%7Bkeyword)&gad\_source=1&gad\_campaignid=19630633599&gbraid=0AAAAApMHwPmeFxui3K\_akJSfmKEUJS61G&gclid=CjwKCAjwsfzSBhB5EiwAOGyqSfzmyk6XS9KUT7eXLt-ifb24oJqfxf9xIEyHSN7hwoWSe\_z5FxSuGRoC1DwQAvD\_BwE I am preventing 3.3 metric tonnes of c02 every year.

A list of what the lovely ucp has done

- wrecked unions in Alberta

- sold our personal information

- deregulated insurance companies and took off the caps

-handed over provincial management of campgrounds to private companies

- made it harder to get maid for people with debilitating diseases. The main reason maid was invented in the first place.

- made student loans harder to get.

-war room

-legislated cell phone use in classroom. ( a good thing)

-cut off trans healthcare for children going against doctors advice.

- stopped the construction of the super lab.

- opted out of the canadian dental plan.

-cancelled the rappel firefighting team.

-gets libraries to spy on people for the governmen.

- changed the curriculum to an absolute shit show one And implementes it in a horrible way.

- the time the beefed with netflix

- put a billion dollars towards a pipeline that never got built.

- tried to encourage people to grt COVID shots by promising people $100 and never paid them. (Though honestly those people who sold their ideals for $100 deserve ehat they ge lmao)

-scrapped the caps for utilities

- MH care scandal

- needlessly spent hundreds of millions of putting AHS under useless pillars and decentralizing it.

- destroyed legitimate petitions

- lied about sketchy ones to make them seem more legit

-gerrymandering

- overstepped provincial government bounds and made it so kids can’t go by a different name at school.

- banned books

-Gives less money to disabled people bu destroyinf aish and creating ADAP but gave a raise to MLAs because of inflation

- uses the notwithstanding clause as their own little cheat code to ensure they don’t have to follow canadian law.

- destroyed the clean water board

- started a provincial police force that nobody wanted.

- demanded more immigrant, and then blamed the Feds when more immigrants came.

- gave public education money to private schools

- changed healthcare, and now its not as good as it once was.

- made COVID vaccines harder to get by charging people for them.

- prevented clean energy from coming in

- essentially stole teachers pensions by creating bill 22 and “invested them how they want to invest them* how is that legal? Right they made their own bill to do it.

- got rid of gdl licenses. (this is a good thing)

- got rid of daylight savings time. (gives this government prerogative to not listen to referendums.)

- changed the id cards to have citizenship. (sketchy)

- gave everyone $100.00

-made it so you can do telephone doctor appointments (another good thing. I had to really think to try to make this list as unbiased as possible.)

things the ucp wants to do:

- data centres

- seperate

- make private healthcare

- wreck the public education system

- do the sketchiest carbon capture projects that are not very effective. I am for carbon capture projects by the way

-remove bike lanes

- build a high speed train in Alberta (although this will happen in 2000 and never is my joke.

is there anything else I’m missing? Is there any good things they have done? I would love to know from future ucp voters…

Why small individual actions matter

Sometimes things feel hopeless because we can’t go all solar, go fully vegan, because taking all those supplements and changin the way you eat seems expensive and exhausting. I know I don’t have the energy for that. we may not be able to get rid of our cars because we have shit public transit and we cant afford an ev. Plus everyone keeps telling us indivisual actions don’t matter. But they do matter. They matter less than industry for sure and I tell myself this if I goof up or I out out a little extra carbon due to life.
