To be more specific, I'm referring to the Western Roman Empire between the 3rd and 7th centuries. As far as I know, one reason slavery became much less significant in the Middle Ages was that the Church held that Christians should not be enslaved. Did this idea already exist among Christian Romans?

I have been reading some older historical studies that describe the pre-Islamic Arabs as possessing a relatively unified culture. However, given the prominence of tribal affiliations during that period, did people primarily identify themselves as members of an Arab identity, or did tribal loyalties supersede any broader sense of being Arab?
