Questions about using another Reddit forum to promote short script

I was curious if anyone would be willing to explain best practices for the forum on Reddit called Produce my short script. I tried asking one of my questions to the moderator, but I received no response.

I'd like to know if anyone has any stories, both of success and failure (I define success as the script is either made or got close to it, and failure as a script was sent but that was the last the writer heard of it), of using this forum. What I'm most concerned with is the safety of it...how does one vet the safety aspect? I know this would be an odd question, but does one have to immediately reveal their name and personal info (location etc.) if there is a request? It would seem like one would have to, but that does make me nervous (maybe because I am most likely older than most here).

Also, I have some handicaps (both mental/physical) that would prevent me from being involved in making the film - is that a dealbreaker? How much involvement is expected? As I mentioned, I am an older person, and believe it or not, I only have a phone for emergencies and don't have a webcam on my desktop, so I don't Zoom...does that put me at a severe disadvantage?

I am basically a hobbyist writer who got only as far as having a screenplay considered by a major streamer...that's it, and that consideration was pretty much done because I have a fear of flying and couldn't get out to L.A.

Yet, I have a very high-concept short with one location, and a version of it was published as a short story. It's been my dream to get something I wrote adapted, but my anxiety - which is severe and hampered me in life - has kept me back. Nevertheless, I write, and everyone here will understand why - it's impossible not to do so.

But if I post there and someone wants to make the short, and if I tell them all this - can't Zoom, etc. - is that basically it, is it a no-go? I've often read filmmakers would really like the writer to stay out of the picture once a script is accepted, but I'm not sure that's how it works on this level. So, yes, this is a bit of a weird set of questions, but if anyone would like to answer them, it would be appreciated (and no matter what, I probably will promote my script at that forum anyway, because like I say, it's hard not to).

Question about digital download sales

Does anyone know how big digital comic sales are? I thought about this as I purchased a few digital comics this week (I intend on doing this from time to time to save space). I did a search but the response could not be correct - it said something like over $4 billion. Perhaps that is actually the entire industry, print and digital, with the majority of that going to print? It just seems like something got erroneously conflated by Gemini in its analysis.

Question for Doug about particular satire

Can you tell me if the satire of the television show "Project UFO" was ever collected in a super special or one of the Barnes and Noble books? In terms of the former, was thinking of that one super special from years ago that had a lot of science fiction stuff in it (e.g., Lost in Space, Invaders from Mars, etc.)

Buying annuities for the homeless and other poor individuals

Should philanthropists focus on buying lifetime fixed-income annuities for the homeless and poor individuals such as older people who didn't plan well and have chronic illness and not much of a safety net? I was thinking of people like Warren Buffet and Mackenzie Scott...would their billions be better off annuitized and cash-transferred to the poor?

Question about sending message

I want to ask a question of a celebrity musician. I was just about to do so but noticed the following:

"After you've sent your message, download the Cameo app so you can view the whole conversation. Please understand that you are not guaranteed a response."

Two questions I have:

  1. Can I view the conversation on the website under my account if I log in? I am older and never got into smart-phone usage, I only have a very old one for emergencies. Without the app on a phone, can I not do this?

  2. If I do not get a response, am I still charged the money?

Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

NPR concert - what song would you add?

If you could have thrown in one more song to the unique NPR desk concert, which one would it be? The only rule for this question is that it would be a song that in your opinion would have fit the performance.

For me, I think a reasonable answer would be It Doesn't Matter to Me. What would be your answer?

Question about Bob1 and 2 video

I'm sure everyone has seen the interview with Bob 1/2 together, where they are discussing their guitars. For those who know about guitars and stage stuff, I have a question.

There's a point in the interview where 1 says something like "This is a trade secret" referring to some equipment that I think was connected to the guitars and were marked either 1 or 2. My question is, are these special effects that are able to change the way the guitars sound? In other words, does this mean guitars don't have to be tuned in a certain way to sound as they should given the song...i.e., the "Peek-a-boo" guitar sound is different from Gates of Steel, so instead of swapping out the guitar, one merely hits a switch that then turns the guitar into a synthesizer that makes whatever tone is desired? Not even sure I know how to ask the question, but I'm sure someone understands what I am asking. I just never understood that part and what he meant.

Cameo question (Jerry)

Can't do it now, but one day I would like to have Jerry do a Cameo for me. Only reason I say can't do it now is because money is tight; I'll eventually save up enough to do it, though.

However, I just noticed something - you can message him for $3. I am curious - has anyone done this? This might be an economical solution for me, but I want to make sure that even the $3 is worth it. I basically just want to ask a couple questions. But, the one thing I sort-of don't like about the Cameo videos I have seen of him is they are a bit short...I know it wouldn't be worth it for the Cameo celebrities if they did long ones, but I figure maybe two minutes is what each one should be (and heck, maybe one could request a snippet of a song, although I doubt that is allowed from what I see).

So, I therefore am asking if anyone has done a Cameo message and what that experience is like. Thanks.

Question about retro classics and expired membership

I recently cancelled my PC Game Pass subscription (plan to re-subscribe at some point). I saw, though, that I could still access the app, and for the heck of it, tried to play the Retro Classics from Antstream (i.e., the Atari Activision games, as well as some other platforms). Even though it has been either 24 or 48 hours since the subscription stopped, I could still play the Retro Classics. Other games I tried such as Lego Star Wars, I could not. Just wondering - is there an exception with this game package? For some reason, am I allowed to keep it, or is there a delay before it disappears? I just want to make sure if I keep playing I don't trigger a new subscription at this time. Thanks for any info...

Intersegment Eliminations - Disney

Disney oftentimes sells stuff to itself, and these revenues are eventually eliminated via the concept of intersegment elimination.

So, to the best of my understanding, this means that if Disney's studio segment licenses a Marvel movie to ABC for $1 million, that $1 million is eventually taken away from the top-line tally, justified by the idea that a company cannot sell something to itself and book it as a successful capture of sales.

Okay, $1 million in the consolidated top line is gone...but...

Does ABC likewise see a disappearance of $1 million in cost? And is that $1 million in cost subtracted from the gross cost line (I assume it would not come from the SGA line, correct?)?

What I am getting at is this: for purposes of vertical integration, is the transaction essentially friction-less...in other words, does Disney essentially license that Marvel movie to ABC for free?

Now, there would be one cost that comes into play though: the fair-market value must be recorded and used to derive payments to profit participants, as well as generate payment statements for guild residuals. So, that isn't free, and that is going to emerge somewhere, in consolidated form, on an earnings report (where exactly is probably found in the 10Q). This is the sweetheart-deal issue.

Let's say the sweetheart-deal payment is $100,000...would the real cost of the movie to Disney in that transaction therefore be $900,000? And is that what ends up actually being eliminated on an intersegment basis, just the $900,000, or is it the full $1 million?

Thanks in advance...

Danny McBride's book

Just curious about something - anyone here, by any slim chance, reading Danny McBride's short-story collection Thrilling Tales of Modern Men?

The reason I ask is because I am making my way through the first story, and it feels very much like Stephen King, the Night-Shift King. McBride has stated he read King, Barker, Koontz when he was younger.

I am enjoying the story and although I know there is the chance the remaining pages won't be as great as are the ones I've completed so far, and that the rest of the stories may not be good (to my opinion, anyway, I don't mean that objectively for all), I felt compelled to make this post/inquiry...I am a slow reader and it would have been a long time before I would be able to ask this question if I waited until I was done.

Like I say, I am really curious...anyone reading this, by any chance? And what do you think? Do you get the King-storytelling feeling, his influence?

Question about Sean Astin compensation

I saw an article about Sean Astin and his compensation for Lord of the Rings. Not sure, but it seems like it is referencing an older interview, but the point is, he, and others from that movie, said they were not paid a lot. Supposedly, his payment was $250,000 and he added, "no residuals."

Now, I assume he would not accidentally or purposely mix up the terms "residuals" versus "profit participation," so he would literally mean guild residuals. (And to boot, he is now a leader in the relevant guild)

My question: Wouldn't residuals be mandated? Otherwise, is he saying one can opt out of them? That wouldn't make sense because it would be easy to force people to opt out of them, especially lower actors and crew. But a lot of times things just are as they are and don't make sense.

So, can people opt out, especially if they are stars, or, did he actually have backend he isn't mentioning? Or, was the trilogy non-union?

Dan Aykroyd novel coming this fall

Looking forward to Dan's novel coming out in October. Called Soulhider.

I always wanted him to write a book. A memoir, to be honest, but a fictional tome that has to do with aliens is fine by me. I hope this is the first of many books, and I definitely hope he writes a collection of short stories someday.

Question about Nasdaq funds

I want to put forth an argument to HR that it needs to get either a NASDAQ fund as an option (something like QQQ) or, since my plan is Vanguard-related, the tech-heavy VGT (or I think VITAX might be the equivalent fund). But something occurred to me, and I want to know my facts before mentioning this: how many here have the QQQ or something similar as an option? Is it possible it is standard procedure with these plans not to offer them because of potential volatility and drawdowns, preferring instead to focus on S&P/total funds? The brokerage option is, unfortunately, not an option because of the ridiculous fee structure.

Fledgling stage question

There is a young fledgling of a big black bird in my yard - not sure what type of bird it is, I always just call them the really big black birds (and then the smaller ones the medium black birds, followed by the big black birds, which are the grackles), but I assume a crow-type bird, if not an actual crow? Don't think it is a raven, would love it if it were, but I wouldn't be so lucky. Anyway, this crow-type fledgling has been around my yard for over a week. Been in and out of grass, etc. Just curious how long the stage lasts. I was concerned if it should have already been flying around (I'm nervous to approach it to see if it can fly because my instinct says it can't yet and I hate scaring them into the brush, but I would like to see if I can figure out how to throw it a piece of bread to see if it is hungry or not). I have seen two of the really big birds hang around at times in the morning so perhaps those are the parents, but they may just be getting the peanuts I put out for the squirrels.

What movie(s) for Halloween night?

Forgive if this has already been covered, because this probably has occurred to others, but...since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, what films do you think we will get? My presumption is there will be a Svengoolie and a House of Svengoolie double-feature. Also, what would you like to see?

I'm thinking possibly we see House of Svengoolie do The Monster Club or Blair Witch, essential repeats with new material added. But I wouldn't mind seeing the show do Prince of Darkness by John Carpenter (that could lead to a joke along the lines of, hey, we got Carpenter for Halloween...but not that film!) or the first Creepshow. (Monster Club would not be a bad choice though, I absolutely love that film and it would be great for Halloween.)

For Svengoolie, I suppose something like Night of the Demons could work. I know this won't be popular - please, go easy on me!! - but I, very sheepishly, say there would be nothing wrong with The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. I do like that film. I'm drawing a blank though on other ideas. You could go Universal classic, but I think something more directly tied to the holiday should be considered. What 1950s/60s/70s films take place directly on Halloween?

Question about Toht

Was watching a movie called "Invisible Agent" on Svengoolie. The host said that Toht was reportedly influenced by Peter Lorre's character in the film, but he intimated that this was not necessarily confirmed. Even before Svengoolie said this, just from the first sequence where Lorre's Baron character is about to attempt to extract information from the guy who would become the invisible agent, I said to myself, this really reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Ark. So I was interested to know...has it ever been confirmed that Toht is sourced to this 1940s-era film? It really does seem like Toht had to have been influenced by this.
