Tabletop Perspective:
I’d personally rather have an elite melee option where ranged capability is sacrificed for increased melee performance. This would also make it easier to keep hidden, and the unit alive in general

Aesthetics/Weapon Dynamics:
Both the Spears and Axes are made to be wielded two handed, and thus the position of holding the shaft of the weapon aloft parallel to the ground and pointed down the battlefield is normal.
For a single handed sword, pointing your sword at the enemy seems silly, not to mention the sword is definitely extremely heavy. I suppose the Custodian could deactivate the swords power field and lay it on top of the shield to provide a platform to fire from, but that’s never been depicted by GW and obviously wasn’t their intent.

Rule of Cool:
Look how much sicker the Blade Champions one and two handed swords are. They’re sleek and pretty. The Sentinel swords are goofy and unwieldy looking, and unnecessarily bulky. It isn’t plausible these swords could be wielded with the Custodes renowned speed one handed.

In a figurative way, the old writers of the setting gave us a beautiful, beautiful, baby that is 40k
