Sigma f1.4 40mm - how much to stop down maximum?

Hi,

I was taking photos on a sunny day and I wanted as much in focus as possible.
I also want maximum sharpness that’s why I got this bulky and heavy lens in the first place.

The question is how much should I stop down maximum so I won’t lose sharpness?

It can be stepped down to F14 or F16 don’t remember now.

Thanks!

Waiting for a cheque (is this normal?) [scammers]

Hi,

So Virgin is trying to scam me, moved to new house where Virgin isn’t available.

Sent them many emails with many documents proving change of address to their 2 emails they provided.

Then they charged me £400 pretending no emails were sent.

Contacted them again and they said they refunded.
Few weeks later contacted again and they said they sent a cheque.

That was 16 days ago.
Contacted them now and they told me 1-2 more days and it will arrive.

Did anyone have a similar story with those scammers?

If I won’t receive a cheque in 2 days I’m doing a court claim.

How to take care of those succulents?

Hi,

I bought them cheap from a lady after I’ve heard it goes to charity.
I only know P. Afras and Sarcocaulis from succulents.

There are 2 images of what look like same plant, but with different labels?

And on one of them you can see the the bottom leaves dying and falling off easily.

They are in normal potting soil with pebbles on top.
I always use a mix of 3 lava types, zeolite and baked clay.

Wondering if I should repot them asap?

And how do I know when they need water?

With P. Afra it’s not the best technique but when leaves wrinkle you know it’s time to water.

Thanks in advace

Partial eclipse tips? (Dslr and iPhone)

Hi,

Where I live there is going to be partial eclipse, 93%.

It’s going to be in the direction of sea with some nice landscape around it, and quite low on the horizon.

I only have a Lumix S5 with Sigma 40mm f1.4 lens.
Trying to image the sun only would be silly at 40mm, so I would like to include the foreground.

The problem is if I buy a filter and put it on the lens, the foreground will be probably pitch black.

The only way of doing it I can think of is composite, but I don’t like the idea of for example selecting the sun and pasting it into other image. So is there anything else I can do?

Also I’ve seen some timelapses on YT with foreground shot with smartphones, how come?

Is it safe for an iPhone since you use the wide angle?
It’s also going to be low on horizon.

Thanks

How to shape my Ficus?

I want to transform it into something else, something better especially.

Any tips please?

Thanks

Astilbe problem

Bought them through RHS, arrived in bad condition in 1L pots.

I can’t plant it in the ground yet unfortunately, so repotted to something larger with nice drainage and good soil with pumice etc.

But they seem to worsen, brown leaf ends.

They were in a spot where they would get some sun but not much, moved it to even shadier spot.

What could be wrong?
And if the leaves or branches die, can it come back?

I’ve seen a guy plant it by putting bare roots into soil.

Thanks

Anyone has Ficus Salicaria? (Europe)

Hi,

I really love this one but it’s extremely rare in the UK.

I had a contact to one of you from Germany but somehow lost it, and don’t remember the nickname. 😥

Anyway I would like to buy a small tree or cuttings.

Please PM me if you have it and where are you from.

Thanks

Attracting Blue Tits (what house and feeder?)

Hi,

I want to attract them to live in or close to my garden.
I have a bunch of trees around my garden so not sure they will find it.

Anyway I found some food for them on Amazon.
But I want to buy nice houses for them (so other birds can’t get in) and some feeders.

Is there anything on Amazon you can folks recommend?

I know nothing of birds.

Thanks!

How people have so many plants without pests? (Animal friendly)

So far had a rose in previous house and in the current house I just moved in.

In both cases there was whole “zoo” living on it.
We have tried using stuff like neem oil, dish soap etc.
But nothing ever worked.

There were aphids, spider mites, fungus gnats and flies and ants eating stuff from this one tree.. oh even tiny birds!

I’m new to gardening and I can’t understand how people have so many roses and other plants without having to constantly fight pests?

Perhaps they are using hard chemicals?

I’m against it since I have a cat, neighbours cats, and even birds eating those bugs so using chemicals probably isn’t a good idea!

I see people having hundreds of trees/plants and not having any issues.

I have sycamore large trees and some tree with those green fruits turning red later on I believe.

Also all infested with ants.

Soil improver?

Hi,

So I want to plant trees and stuff but after digging like 5-10cm there is some old anti weed material, underneath it is super muddy boggy soil, like compacted clay or something.

Someone suggested this product:

https://www.diy.com/departments/verve-peat-free-soil-improver-50l/5063022070302\_BQ.prd

But I want to make sure it will help and how it works.

Do I just dig like 30-50cm wide hole and mix that “mud” with this product? And then it will be like proper soil for years or how does it work?

And how is this different from normal organic compost?
I have few large bags of top soil and compost.

Thanks in advance

Can I even grow anything here?

So I just moved into this house and thought this spot would be perfect to plant some tree like Chinese Elm or some other stuff.

I did dig a bit and found there is this old filthy material (cloth like) and underneath is very very boggy soil like mud or something.

Is there anything I can actually try doing here? 😥

Here is a list of plants I’m interested in having, I have to be careful also due to having a cat.

- Flamingo tree
- Rosemary
- Red Patio Roses
- Lavender
- Fuchsia
- Ostrich Ferns
- Astilbe
- Heuchera
- Salvia “Hot Lips”
- Astrantia major “Rubra”
- Geum flames of passion
- Pussy willow
- Purple beech

Are these Astilbe worth planting?

Bought them online, arrived in bad shape and I assume half dead?

I water them once a day sometimes twice.
Received them few days ago, was refunded fortunately.

I’m wondering though if I should plant them now, or keep them in pots for now and see if they will survive?

I guess repotting might put more stress on them?

Thanks in advance

[iOS 26.4] Text styling, selecting text - Mail/Notes

Hi,

  1. How can I for example copy and paste text into email or notes without copying the font styling?

  2. How can I make multiple quotes while writing email to respond to multiple paragraphs separately?

  3. How do I easily copy all text in notes and other apps?
It’s frustrating and I have to mess with it a lot to finally get the option “select all”.

Thanks

Maple trees invasion

So I have a few maple trees in my garden.
There is also one massive on council land but it covers big part of the house and garden.

I didn’t know that Maple spreads so easily and grows like crazy.

I now other than having a lot of weeds growing constantly, also have hundreds of young Maple trees growing out of the ground.

The ground is mixed with gravel and there is some old material over the soil. (Old and filthy but it’s a rental house)

Removing weeds is easy peasy compared to young Maple growth.

I suspect that the whole ground is full of Maple thick roots.
I don’t know if they grow from the roots or those damn little Maple helicopters.

Is there anything I can do?
Or is my destiny having to cut them every few days to make them less visible?

I’m not exactly a gardener so sorry for silly questions lol

How to dispose of soil/gravel/dead wood? / good bags?

So I have a lot of trees in/outside my garden.

The garden is full of gravel mixed with soil and dead wood/leaves and woodlice bugs. 🪲

I want to get rid of some of it but I’ve been told I would have to separate it all and recycle.

Issue is it would take me a year to separate it all.

So whats the best and cheapest way to do it? (Except dumping it into a forest lol)

Can I just put it all into bags and recycle for free? (North Somerset)

Or should I get someone locally to get rid of it for me?

Also does anyone have some good heavy duty bags battle tested to recommend? (Preferably Amazon)

I have a large builders bag but I would really prefer to be able to tie it before putting into our cars.

Thanks in advance

Outdoor cat into mostly indoor cat

So my cat was always outdoor cat.
We moved to a new house and she was getting lost every night but had GPS installed.

I’m now trying to not let her out at night.
She can spend all day in the garden.

The problem is she is going from door to door and crying 😿

Is she going to get used to it soon?

During day she mostly chills in the garden.

Also she uses cat litter tray sometimes, and sometimes uses my new garden as a toilet.

Thanks for any tips
