As per official documents, 1,742.6 hectares of forest land will be diverted for the purpose. Felling of 4.48 lakh trees is proposed.
The Environment Ministry has granted environmental clearance for the Kente extension integrated coal block in Chhattisgarh's Hasdeo-Arand forests, paving the way for mining with a projected production capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum.
The clearance comes weeks after the project received in-principle forest approval and marks the third major coal mining project to receive clearance in the Hasdeo forests. The Kente extension coal block, allotted to Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Ltd, will be developed and operated by the Adani Group.
The approval has come despite a 2021 biodiversity assessment by the Wildlife Institute of India recommending that no further mining be undertaken in the Hasdeo-Arand coalfields, citing the likely impact on biodiversity. The project involves the diversion of 1,742.6 hectares of forest land and the phased felling of 4.48 lakh trees, while local tribal communities and the Congress have opposed the project over concerns of large-scale deforestation and its impact on forest-dependent communities.
