Toyota doubles down on EVs while rivals retreat

Partial excerpt from article:

“There is a particular kind of business decision that only looks brilliant in hindsight, and only after everyone who made the opposite call has finished writing off the difference. It rarely feels brave at the time. It usually feels like being the last person in the room who did not get the memo.”

“The American electric vehicle market spent most of the past decade running on a subsidy. That credit, worth $7,500 per car, expired on Sept. 30, 2025, and the correction arrived exactly on schedule. Automakers sold 462,892 all-electric vehicles in the first half of 2026, down 23.8% from the same period a year earlier, according to Cox Automotive.”

“The industry response was a stampede for the exits. Carmakers have booked nearly $70 billion in write-downs as they scrap and postpone electric programs, reported Automotive News. Honda alone canceled three North American electric projects and now expects its first annual net loss since 1957.”

“One automaker did not flinch. Toyota confirmed this month that it will keep rolling out new battery-electric models through the rest of the year, even as it trims spending elsewhere in the lineup.”

“The 2027 Highlander makes the point better than any executive quote could. Toyota redesigned its three-row family hauler as an electric-only vehicle, with a launch window running from later this year into the first quarter of 2027, according to Automotive News.”

“That is not a compliance car parked in a corner of the showroom. The Highlander is a school-run vehicle for suburban families with two kids and a dog. Committing it to batteries only, in the same quarter rivals were canceling flagship EVs, tells you what Toyota believes about where demand lands in 2028.”

(California) Toyota is offering $3,000 off bZ, if you trade in your old EV

After introducing the 2026 bZ, which dropped the former bZ4X name and received upgrades in just about every way, Toyota's electric SUV has suddenly become one of America's most popular EVS.

To make it even more tempting, Toyota is offering a $3,000 conquest cash offer this month toward the purchase of a new bZ if you trade in an old competitive EV.

The deal is available in California for owners of a 2020 to 2023 model year Tesla Model Y or Model 3, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen
ID.4, Kia EV6, or Nissan Leaf.

You have got to be kidding me…

Pulled up to a supercharger and found this gem… What would you do? I talked to the owner and asked them to not be such assholes and at least free one space up. They claimed they couldn’t charge their car any other way. 🤬🤬🤬

Audi Confirms 3-row Q7 e-tron (Late 2027) and A4 e-tron Sportback (Mid 2028)

“According to Q7 product manager Wolfgang Carl, the Q7 e-tron will likely come standard with a dual-motor setup and the option of three rows of seating.“

“Big changes are also afoot inside. The Q7 e-tron will have a completely different interior than the new gas-powered Q7 variant, with more subtle screen integration and plenty of buttons. Mohr said the company acknowledges that buyers are seeking a return to the golden era of Audi interiors, so it's likely that even the brand-new gas Q7 will be updated in time to match the EV.”

“It's a different story for the A4 e-tron, which is set to be available in both Sportback (a sedan with a big hatchback) and Avant station wagon guises — though the latter likely won't come to the U.S. The A4 is expected to be offered with single- and dual-motor configurations, and there should be a choice of battery sizes. Beyond that, Audi will likely offer a hotter S4 E-tron model. There could even be an electric RS 4 too.”

“Audi's chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr states that the electric Q7 e-tron will land in late 2027 or early 2028, while the A4 E-tron will get another six to 12 months of development time before it's introduced.”

Shoppers can soon save $3,500 on a new EV in California

“The California plan comes nearly two years after Newsom pledged shortly after President Donald Trump's 2024 election win that he would step in to offer electric vehicle tax credits to consumers if Trump followed through on campaign promises to end the popular $7,500 federal credit. Trump did follow through on those pledges when he pushed legislation through Congress that ended the federal tax credit on Sept. 30, 2025.

EV supporters praised California for stepping in to file at least part of the breach.

$135 million for first-time EV buyers, matched dollar-for-dollar by automakers, adds up to more than $270 million in welcome help for new EV buyers," said Mike Murphy, CEO of the American EV Jobs Alliance, an advocacy group that works with car manufacturers to push U.S. and state lawmakers to adopt EV-friendly policies. "This legislation will fund a $3,500 cash-on-the-hood credit for tens of thousands of first-time EV buyers in the Golden State."

Why Volvo Is Still All-In on Electric Vehicles

Partial excerpt from article:

“When you are a small company, you can’t bet on every horse in the race,” says Volvo chief commercial officer Erik Severinson. “If you bet on everything, you focus on nothing. We took a deliberate decision about five years ago to focus our internal resources on electric vehicles and software-defined vehicles.”

It is admittedly an expensive bet and a tough journey, he says, but it would have been even more difficult if Volvo was also investing in internal combustion engines to meet the latest emissions standards around the world.

Volvo’s CEO Håkan Samuelsson said he thinks EVs are better cars, plain and simple. They are lower cost and better for the environment. Electrification is the future and that is where he is allocating most of Volvo’s resources, engineering electric vehicle platforms and developing software.

But he recognizes the transition must be managed properly and in markets like the U.S., plug-in hybrids remain a bridge solution until there is a greater acceptance of pure EVs. In the interim, Volvo can share costs with Geely for platforms, powertrains, and basic technology, but with a Volvo top hat.

For those sick of paying for gas, take a look at used EVs. The prices may be a lot more attainable than you think.

Searched CarGurus near my ZIP, and these are examples of pricing for models less than 30K on the odometer.

There’s a ton of model variety and this slideshow of screenshots is just only a few in my search results that came up.

There are some other models not shown in the slideshow such as the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf that are selling for even less than $15K.

I think there is a misconception that EVs are some unattainable luxury product for the everyday person, but as you can see, they make a great value when purchased used.
