It seems that weezer so much bigger in America than they are in Europe
16f from Ireland. I could be wrong about this but it seems that Weezer are far less visible here in Europe than they are in America. I don’t really hear about them outside of the landscape of the internet. Just from an outsider's perspective of America it seems that they are pretty much a household name in the US. In my experience that’s not the case here. People do know about them but it seems to be more in alternative circles, but a lot of the time when I say 'Weezer are my favourite band' I get a lot of 'who are they?'. I’d understand if people my age didn’t know much about a 90s rock band, but I get it even from people who were young when they were at their peak popularity.
I was thinking that Weezer and Blur could be
compared. In Europe Blur are definitely a household name . I’ve seen Americans online calling them a one hit wonder and though it might seem like that to them, they have a massive, iconic catalogue . Weezer's situation seems to be like a similar story flipped maybe not to the same extent but you know what I mean.
I’m not saying they are unknown, and they get a lot of radio play and are still big it just seems like they are not as big as a deal in Europe and possibly the rest of the world
And just to add to this basically everyone I know who is a weezer fan is a teenager who found them through the internet. You think it would be the other way around with people in their 30s to 50s the only time I met an older weezer fan it was my my teacher who turned out to be a die hard fan , it was so funny because he seemed so surprised when I said I knew them and proceeded to talk about it for like 15 minutes.
