Ubisoft Connect Vs. Steam in a nutshell

Ubisoft actually allows users to disable push notifications thankfully, but there can't be any plausible reason for them being so much larger than Steam's notifications. Feel like it just stands as another instance to why people dislike the launcher so much, the interface is just dreadful.

XBOX 25th Anniversary graphics on their website

I just thought it'd be worth sharing these here, since I actually quite like a lot of these graphics, for whatever they're worth. I always enjoy it when Xbox reflects on their past console generations like this. Part of me wishes they'd go a bit further, I still remember back during the 20th anniversary when Xbox's site emulated the original Xbox and 360 aesthetics for a bit, that was pretty fun to see.

MARVEL Tokon: Another PlayStation port, another arbitrary PSN requirement

I have to appreciate the gall that Sony has, after all of the prior controversy surrounding forced PSN requirements, to nevertheless force it in this new release. I used to be pretty passive about it, but we already know now that it does literally nothing for the functionality of online and crossplay. Especially after having pulled away future singleplayer ports for PC, it just registers as a slap to the face. Game apparently doesn't work on Linux anyway, hell of a pity since it seems to be fairly enjoyable. Can't blame anyone who doesn't care either way, I just can't stand 3rd-party account requirements.

Digimon: Cyber Sleuth foil card prices, before and after discontinuation

Just thought I'd share this here, because it was pretty baffling to me when I first noticed it. Really odd circumstance where the developers decided to discontinue the trading cards feature for their game, while it's still presently available to purchase on Steam. What traditionally happens when Steam games featuring trading card support get delisted, those trading cards continue being dropped for those who purchased the game, but they (and the items earned via badge crafting) are made no longer purchasable or sellable on the market, and can only be traded. In this case, drops on these trading cards were disabled, yet they and said items continue being accessible through the market, and this has consequently resulted in the value for the cards and items skyrocketing.

It's particularly egregious in the case of the foiling cards from what I've seen. Pictured above is the Keisuke foil card. Previously available for only 90 cents, it jumped up immediately to $10 after the initial announcement of discontinuation, stabilized to $5, and now is being sold for $50, as much as the game itself is selling for right now. I really have to wonder if this is some sort of bug that's occurring, rather than some sort of intended effect. I assume trading cards are normally made inaccessible through the market after a game's delisting due to the potential abuse that could occur as a result, and this is probably one of the reasons; item values for said game exploding in value. Whether or not that's actually a good thing is up to the individual I guess, just thought it was funny to see these foil cards take on prices akin to actual valuable Pokemon cards or whatever.

In light of recent physical games uproar, game delisting is still a blight

I don't understand why some companies just insist on making it so difficult to support their games. This can obviously be remedied by sailing the seas on PC, but you don't really get that option on modern consoles, and you're effectively SOL if you didn't buy into them early, especially so once physical releases are phased out entirely. I don't see this point getting raised enough by people, but it's a fact that will be extremely difficult to ignore once consoles enter an all-digital era. Especially with virtually all mainstream sports games releasing annually, and delisting older titles after just a few years.

Already makes me cringe to see how much of a community has fostered around collecting delisted Steam games, and a market that subsequently sells off these keys, sometimes at ridiculously exorbitant prices. Makes me wish that Steam would just implement some kind of game trading feature which expands to existing games in one's library, and not just game gifts in their inventory.

Watching Jerma's latest TF2 stream was just depressing

I can never stand how adamant some people are within the community, to completely ruin a streamer's experience just for the sake of stream sniping. Especially if it's just a guy returning to the game after a few years of last playing it, doing literally everything they can to try and ruin the stream and potentially get it taken down with slurs in chat, names, guns. This is obviously nothing new, but it always goes to show how fucked this community is sometimes, and I seriously hope that Valve decides eventually to start taking stricter action towards players who grief with racism, inappropriate sprays, slurs in chat, and all that. Feels like every day that I'll run into some guy, or a stack of players, who are doing nothing more than spewing abhorrent shit. I've been playing the game for a long time, I know it's just the way that the community is, but it sucks that Jerma had to face the worst of it.

Can't install Conker or Blinx on the PC app?

I'm already subscribed to PC Game Pass, was able to install Crimson Skies and Fusion Frenzy, but Blinx and Conker haven't had any install prompt for me, only a prompt to subscribe to some higher tier in order to play with cloud. Wondering if anyone's having the same issue, and if there's a fix.

EDIT: It just took a bit longer to update on the page than the other two games, looks to be live now.

We must never take Steam's display names for granted

It baffles me how still, after all of these years, companies like Sony and Microsoft will charge their users if they want to change their display name. And how even other PC platforms like Epic, EA, or Ubisoft will force you to have a unique display name, one which can only be changed anywhere from a couple of weeks, to several months. I only wonder why other platforms have never mirrored Steam's system, and allowed users to use whatever display names they want, within reason. Just a completely innocuous feature in the grand scheme of things, but I still remember it being a breath of fresh air, being able to make my name as short or as generic as I wanted it to be, when making the jump to PC. Feel like I'd unironically be very upset if they ever decided to up and change how the system works, to make each display name strictly unique per user.

More bot shenanigans?

Got excited for a second, but I knew it was too good to be true. None of these games are even remotely close to these 3k player counts, but I've never seen it before that bots load up dedicated server apps. Don't really see what's to gain, not sure if it's indication of people playing pirated games either, since that'd usually be Spacewar? Not sure, pretty bizarre though.

How many of us first got into PC gaming on Christmas of 2013?

Family had purchased an all-in-one desktop computer for me when I was a kid, but it was obviously more for general use as the family PC at the time since we didn't have a computer prior. I was very into watching Garry's Mod and TF2 videos online, and really wanted to get a computer just so I could play those games. Was pretty lucky that Valve just happened to be giving L4D2 away for free from the 25-26th, ended up playing a tooon of it. Just funny to look back on as I was probably the golden demographic of users they were targeting with that, little kids who just got a PC for Christmas. Or if they weren't, it was just the perfect scenario for me at the time, lol. Really a shame that it doesn't seem they ever repeated this kind of giveaway since, I wonder how many others received the game under similar conditions as I had.

What is the reason for some layered launchers in Steam games?

I'm actually curious about this. I used to be pretty indifferent about this habit some publishers enforced, as I was always of the opinion that it was miles better than the console exclusivity practice. But over the course of time, it definitely has started to wear thin on me.

Just seems to make the simple act of getting into a game abundantly more difficult, much of the time. Feel like virtually every external launcher beyond Steam itself likes to conveniently forget at random, that I had saved my password, so they'll ask me to input my account details again, much of the time. And then they'll ask me to verify my email, again and again.. I could almost get the point of these launchers acting as DRM, or if the game is online + cross-platform, so all players use a dedicated online tag for that game or whatever. But with singleplayer offline games which also have a dedicated DRM layer on top of it, it almost quite literally serves as nothing more than a headache to me. It completely kills all of the motivation I would've initially had loading up a game, and it very frequently just makes me switch to a different game instead. It just feels like such an archaic practice at this point, which serves no other purpose than to punish a person for legally acquiring a game, versus a pirate. I still remember back when I purchased Trials Evolution on Steam, and only learned after the fact that it forces Ubisoft Connect to be running in the background, despite no disclaimer on the Steam page. And then the game just wouldn't launch due to Ubisoft's software not working, as if their servers were down or something, so I just had to refund the game. It would be less of a pain if these launchers were just fine, but they're not. Even after all of these years somehow, they're still about as half-baked and temperamental as I remember them.

Is there anything I'm missing, though? Truthfully, for singleplayer games, especially ones already loaded up with Denuvo, what is the reason for forcing someone who purchased through Steam to have Ubisoft Connect, EA Play, or some other obnoxious launcher loaded up in the background? All I can think of is it may help these publishers collect player statistics per game, and ultimately benefits them if they have their software loaded up on all PCs that wish to play an Ubisoft or EA game. I can already get the "they're evil" bit, but realistically, they must understand by this point that this practice only serves as incentive for people to go pirate, or to simply abstain from buying their games in the first place. If I wanted to use a game through your launcher, I would've purchased it through your launcher. And if you wanted to circumvent the 30% sale cut that Steam takes, you'd have just made the game exclusive to your launcher. I guess it'd be a shot in the dark to assume that anyone actually knows why this practice has held over the years, but I still have to imagine that there must be some kind of underlying incentive for them, which warrants keeping it in place despite all of the obvious backlash it has received.

Just some thoughts about the Steam Machine's living room experience, and some suggestions.

Just as a full disclosure, I 100% purchased this thing with the idea in mind that it could serve as a functional replacement to my PS5, which exists in the living room. I didn't purchase this under the illusion that it'll be a great price-to-performance proposition, and I'm fully cognizant of the current economic climate which makes this system be priced at hundreds beyond what it was initially intended to be worth. Functionally, at least as far as playing games is concerned, it works very well. I'm not a huge stickler for visual fidelity, and the bulk of games that I enjoy tend to be on the older side, as it is. Great to have specifically as a person who enjoys a lot of that older backlog, which is sorely lacking on the PS5. Even plays a few games of mine better, like Spyro Reignited, just because it doesn't have some arbitrary 30 FPS lock applied to it, carried over from the PS4 version of the game. I frankly don't know a ton of people who only use their console for games if it's in the living room, since entertainment apps are such a lifesaver in a lot of scenarios, but for the types who already have a Smart TV with a functional interface, and just wanted a dedicated game box for the living room, I think they'd be very happy with the system.

Point should also be made that the quiet noise while under load is a legitimate selling point. The thing is probably slightly less powerful than the base PS5, but it is very noticeably quieter, and it's certainly far quieter than many gaming laptops that I've used over the years. I don't typically find system noise to be so much of an issue with game consoles, but for what's packaged in this box, I don't think it's necessarily grasping for straws to point this out as a solid strength of the system.

In terms of gripes, while the Steam Controller is great, it's rough to have it lack a headphone jack, just as well as the Steam Machine. I've always used wired headphones, pretty much all of my game controllers have always had headphone jacks, and I just didn't really expect this to be a compromise for them. Unless you have USB-connected headphones I guess, you'll have to use wireless headphones or earbuds, and my AirPods have abysmal audio latency when connected to anything that isn't an Apple device, so that just won't work for me.

Steam's Big Picture mode is rough. Not sure if I preferred it more prior to the new interface which came with the Deck, but I know that I definitely don't enjoy it for the living room. Having virtually every page that isn't your library be some poorly optimized version of their respective webpage is really annoying, having to scroll through. Issue isn't really helped by resizing the interface, either. Also happens that the interface will occasionally bug out during gameplay, and become very choppy while in-game. It's just one of those things that the consoles have perfected over time I guess, still prefer it over the Switch 2's though. I just wish it was easier to do things like messaging friends, or voice chatting with them. That's the kind of thing which is slightly addressed on the consoles (only just), with some Discord integration on top of their own native voice chat and party interfaces. Steam has them too, it's just so much more of a headache to do with friends of mine, especially since most people just default to Discord anyway, which is a proper nightmare to navigate in the living room unless you're just using it on your phone.

Also, the lack of entertainment apps sucks. Most of the PC audience wouldn't give a damn, but it's been a old fever dream of mine to finally be able to navigate Netflix natively with a game controller on PC. The console-optimized apps just work perfectly for the living room, don't know why they couldn't just drag and drop those versions over to PC or something. It'd probably bloat up BPM, be more clutter that a lot of people probably wouldn't care for, but I promise that most people with a console in their living room are probably going to want to watch some TV shows on it, at some point.

Think the good thing is they could make updates to the software end of things, to expand its usability in this vain. Because I think there's so much more potential for this thing to serve super well in a living room environment, but the software just isn't doing enough to urge people to throw out their existing consoles in place of it, despite all of the good that it has going for it. Especially in light of recent events, I could use a good excuse to just pawn off my PS5 and stick to being pure PC. I just wanted more from the software, all in all. Whether this thing bombs or sells well, I really hope Valve commits to polishing up the Big Picture experience. I've been over consoles for a long time, I've certainly tried and failed to make a living room PC work on at least a few occasions now, and I think the Steam Machine is a very meaningful step towards polishing up that experience just a little more, definitely if it's putting the heat under Microsoft's heels to do the same with Windows.

TLDR: The Steam Machine is the best PC box I've used in the living room, but I'd still like to see more from the software to help it better compete with traditional consoles.

Does anyone know the artist behind Gabe Newell's old Steam profile picture?

Image was taken from the Wayback Machine, of his profile ID 'gabelogannewell' from 2008, though (I think) the ID has since been taken by someone else. His Steam account is a bit of an anomaly, but the profile picture is pretty fun, wonder if it was something done up by a fan, or some artist within Valve.

Any way to keep game details tab open in library?

https://preview.redd.it/vq95bqh0br8h1.png?width=990&format=png&auto=webp&s=58f75683b7210b10f89963f9493814f591e610d4

So I really like the information that's provided with the game details bar, after clicking the 'i' icon to the right. Only issue I've been having with it, is that it's very inconsistent, about whether or not it wants to stay open as I'm clicking through the different games in my library. Sometimes it will, and other times it'll vanish, and won't appear again unless I click the icon. Just seems really cumbersome to me, but I'm also the rare type who makes use of the game details bar I guess. Immediately details Steam Deck compatibility and controller support, which I get a ton of mileage out of. Would love to just have an option to keep this open at all times. If anyone has a solution to this, I'd love to hear it.

New store page scrolling up on its own, on FireFox

Just a weird issue I noticed pretty much immediately after learning of the store page refresh. Checked on FireFox, Chrome, and the Steam client, but it only seems to appear on FireFox, where the page will regularly jut upward in the page every 5 seconds. Curious if anyone else is having this issue, seems a bit annoying.

Edit: Seems to be fixed now, thanks Valve dev.

How often do you guys get monitors with dead/stuck pixels?

Trying to find out if it's purely bad luck on my side, or it really is some poor QA on the part of manufacturers for letting defective displays get cleared for shipping. Wanted to try a Pulsar monitor recently, so I purchased an ASUS monitor, thinking that was the more reliable brand of the Pulsar-equipped monitor brands, and it turned up with dead pixels day one, so I shipped it back. Samsung monitors as well, I'm probably 1-4 in terms of getting monitors without dead/stuck pixels. Before upgrading to my MSI monitor, I had an LG which also had several dead pixels present.

Bad batches will occur with virtually every manufacturer, but I've more or less just stuck with MSI of late, due to their monitors being the most consistent that I've received without defects so far. All together though, it feels of all the monitors I've had, 30% of them shipped without dead/stuck pixels. I'd be curious to hear other peoples' experience with monitors, because each time I get a new one, I'm always keeping the plastic attached in case it has to be immediately boxed up and sent back again, due to defects.
