Italy has kinda lost the early race for computer manufacturing (in the 1980s we had Olivetti and SIP, two early developers of hardware and software, but they were wiped out by the market).

But now, after three decades of stagnation because the boomers hated technology and progress, we are poor enough that the younger generation is actually in favor of data centers. This surprised me and gave me hope. When I see Americans against data centers, I am always surprised: why don't they want their technology and salaries to grow?

Well, I think ti myself, time is ripe to reduce the gap with their economy. Go go Italy, we have a chance to come back!

Billionaire's WARNING: I'm SELLING. The Crash Is Already Here!

Sorry for the clickbait title, it's the original one from the "Diary of a CEO" channel on Youtube.

In this episode (aired today), the interviewer asks Billionaire investor Jeremy Grantham about the stock market.

His suggestion sums up to this sentence:

"Buy a Broad-based index of non-US equities"

Now, the second part of the 90 minutes long interview is all about ecology and topics less related to trading. But the first part is a very clear bearish perspective on the current market. Grantham is extremely convinced the bubble will pop soon, because he predicted the dotcom one in 1999. He brings strong arguments to this.

However, especially when he talks about Mars, fertility rates, et cetera, he seems like an over-pessimistic wannabe expert of all. I felt he was very biased, with strong anti-US and pro-Keynes views.

Time will tell if he is right. My take is that of course a bubble will burst sooner or later, but it won't be soon, it won't be world-ending, and surely an S&P 500 ETF will end up rising again over it, with time.

German rail reliability in spotlight after nationwide outage

Deutsche Bahn suffered wide train stops across Germany this week. A comms system fault during maintenance caused the whole network to grind to a halt, with tens of thousands of people stuck, as well as tons of goods. Services are now running again but the backlash on reliability is already rolling in.

Abroad the German rail system still gets hyped as some gold standard. Germans know it has been unreliable and underfunded for years. Any real fix will need big public money and likely higher taxes or spending shifts.

Just another reminder of the ongoing issues weighing on the German economy. Worth watching for future DAX sentiment.

Why is Google down 3.55% today?

Just saw Alphabet ($GOOGL) get absolutely smoked today: down ~3.55% to the $355 zone with a nasty gap down on the chart. I tried understanding why and here’s what I found:

  • Nasdaq-100 & S&P 500 changes kicked in at open today, plus the big Russell reconstitution is happening this week. Alphabet is getting yanked out of the Russell 1000 Value index and shifting to Growth, so value funds are dumping shares.
  • The $80B+ stock offering they announced early in June to fund the AI buildout is still weighing on sentiment. Dilution fears + huge capex = bagholders getting nervous.
  • Mixed day overall with geopolitics in the background and some rotation happening in big tech/AI names (but S&P 500 is up, so I don't understand why Google is getting more heat from the Iran mess than others).

No big news popped up today, feels more like technical selling + leftover pressure from the capital raise.

Anyone else got extra info I missed?

So I was in this subreddit about a medieval game, and someone posted an AI rendering of one of the characters. Very beautiful and in good taste, in my opinion.

But no, the antis took over the mod team a few months ago, and quickly removed it. For a few minutes, it felt like OP and I were running from rabid people with pitchforks. Of note: in the same sub there are more rampant problems (all "-isms" you can imagine from fans of the Middle Ages, which is fine if kept as jokes about the good old days of patriarchy etc, but sometimes exxaggerates). But yeah, AI art is hated and quickly removed way faster than racism and islamophobia.

Ah, the times we live in.

Luckily, I managed to save the images a few seconds before they were deleted forever. Enjoy Lady Ruthard, one of the leading characters of the game.
