Shasta transfer student

I'm about to start college at Shasta CC as a chem major and plan on transferring to CSUC to get a BS in chemistry. Does anyone know roughly how much of the student population transfers from Shasta make up, especially in my major?

Shasta college questions

Hi all, I'm a trans dude, though I'm not yet on testosterone. I pass very well for a guy, minus my voice, and I'm not willing to be very open about being trans. I didn't see any gender neutral bathrooms as Shasta college, are there any single restrooms? Going into women's restrooms has been a little bit of an issue for me in the past. Would going into the men's potentially turn into a problem for me?

How's having a pacemaker?

To preface this post, I'm 18 FtM but pre anything medical, I've been seeing a cardiologist for a few years. She has not given me an official diagnosis of POTS, but has said that sounds like some of the things I'm experiencing (I would like to pursue that further, but she hasn't done any tests for that). She's told me that I could outgrow it. I have unrelated heart issues that I may need to get a pacemaker for.

What's it like having a pacemaker? Is it possible to have it work with your dysautonomia, or does it make your symptoms worse?

Maybe I'm a little gay?

Generally I consider myself a straight dude. I don't want to have sex with men, but I do maybe find them a bit attractive at times. Mainly this is getting a little aroused when looking at bottom surgery results (or cis men's genitals for the sake of comparison). I don't know if this is just because I want that for myself and am extremely turned on by the thought of getting to penetrate women or if maybe I'm a little attracted to men too.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I could use some fatherly advice

I need advice from someone who has more life experience than me.

I've been journaling for quite some time now as my life has gotten mighty difficult. I usually do it so I'm not stuck wallowing in my emotions, and I've noticed that when I write I frequently end up more upset than I was before.

Is there a better way of journaling of do I have to accept that it's not for me?

Trans tape alternative

I need an alternative binding tape from the brand Trans Tape. I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to the adhesive, but I've never had this sort of skin reaction to other adhesives. I need it to be strong since I plan on using it for swimming. I don't like KT tape because of how much smaller the strips are and that they have a design rather than being totally skin colored.

Thanks for any help you all can give me!

Beginner egg collection questions

Hi all, I'm here for questions about egg collection.

I'm an 18 y/o trans guy but I haven't been able to start medically transitioning, and won't be able to for another couple of years. In the meantime I'd like to do egg collection.

I can't have my family knowing about this. Is it a "mild" enough procedure that I could get away with saying I was going out with friends for a while? Are there any other things I should be aware of that may make it harder to hide?

How do you usually take the hormones needed? If it's a daily injection, can you inject into your thigh or does it have to be in your belly?

Do the hormones have a feminizing effect on your body? Should I expect to have my breasts grow?

I'm hoping to have maybe as many as three kids in the future. Is there a certain number of times I should do egg collection that's recommended for my goals or is it just do it as much as you can?

Are you put to sleep for the procedure? Can you opt for local anaesthetic instead?

Thanks for any information you all can give me.

Can you do egg retrieval as part of a hysterectomy?

I plan on getting my ovaries removed as part of my hysterectomy. Would it be possible to do egg retrieval then or something similar?

Campus transportation

I'll be transferring as a chemistry student in a couple years. Are the classes far apart enough that I'd want a bike to move between classes or are they generally all in the same building?

Should I go to a new/different cardiologist

Hi all, I (18 FtM but pre-transition) have been seeing a cardiologist for about two years.

It started when I went in for a normal pediatrician appointment and had high blood pressure when mine is usually low. My pediatrician asked if I have a family history of heart problems, and I do, so I was referred to a pediatric cardiologist with a specialty in adult congenital heart disease.

My echocardiogram showed no signs of hypertension, but other problems showed up. Specifically that my mitral valve buckles when it closes and an AV block. Since then I've had yearly check ups to see if things are getting worse.

At my first appointment I asked about how I had recently started having trouble with being able to feel my own heart beat when I was doing things that weren't especially physically exerting. My cardiologist brushed this off as dysautonomia, but hasn't done any testing to see if that's true or not.

After that appointment I got a 2 week heart monitor put on. My heart rate dropped as low as 31 bpm with Type 2 AV Block while I was asleep at 4 in the morning. At my follow up appointment my cardiologist didn't mention that.

I've had another yearly check up, and no concern was expressed. Afterwards I wore a 1 week heart monitor where my heart rate dropped as low as 27 bpm with Type 2 AV Block while I was asleep at 4 in the morning. I logged symptoms including chest pain (though at different times/caused by something else), and was not called for a follow up appointment. I rescheduled my yearly appointment to be at the end of next month because of the chest pain I've been experiencing along with strange heart beat feelings and how for an entire week I would repeatedly have a nightmare and wake up in 4 in the morning then start to feel restless as I could feel my heart rate dropping.

I recently had a conversation with my pediatrician (I have no idea why I'm still going to a pediatrician past my 18th birthday, but I am) where she was unhappy about my cardiologist's lack of concern. Should I go see a different cardiologist?

How/will AI impact analytical chemistry jobs?

Hi all,

I know similar questions have been asked here many times before, but I wanted to ask this now that we are seeing AI do poorly when implemented in many work places and greater distrust/dislike for AI.

I'm about to start college, and in high school I got to do a science elective that involved using pH and conductivity meters a lot. I really enjoyed doing measurement work, and looked through the entire spreadsheet for the data collected from our rock dissolution experiment for the fun of it, which makes me want to go into analytical chemistry.

I was recently talking with one of the chemists that my class got to work with and asked about how career progression works as an analytical chemist. He gave me a nice breakdown of how it goes, and that at a certain point you start to more so focus on data analysis. Whenever I hear positive things about AI, it's about data analysis, which makes me worried that this could take over that part of work, removing something I may enjoy, and making career progression more difficult. So, if AI gets implemented into analytical chemistry jobs, what sort of changes can be expected?

Additionally, has AI already been implemented in ways that are worth pointing out or in ways I may not have considered by way of having too narrow of an idea for what counts as AI?

Thanks all.

How might a strapless bra look?

Sorry if that title sounds wild for an ftm space. I cannot wear binders because of a condition I have that makes it hard to breathe at times. I cannot wear binding tape because not only does it look worse than when I just throw on a bralette, but my skin does not react nicely to the adhesive. I want to try wearing strapless bras because I HATE having straps showing. The problem isn't that I'm wearing feminine clothing like those shirts with the neck cut so that the opening is super wide. I normally wear button ups, and having the top button popped just looks nice, but the straps of most of the sports bras I wear are very close to my neck and thick.

I'm pre-everything and I pass extremely well. I'm over 6 feet tall and skinny. I'm somewhere around a B cup, and my chest generally isn't noticeable. I'd like to keep it that way. So, would a strapless bra that is not marketed as a push up bra still have an effect that would make my chest more noticeable?

Should I get a 64 GB Y1 and immediately replace the Micro SD card with a higher capacity one?

I've heard that the internal micro SD card of the Y1 dies after about a year and a half. Sooner or later I'd have to replace the micro SD card, would it be ok to use one that has a higher storage capacity than the original internal micro SD card?

Needing better terminology

Hi all, I'm a pre-everything trans guy. I pass super well (so far I've had people think I'm a girl without my saying so a few times), but because I'm living with my family I can't go stealth. I want to go stealth largely because I don't consider being trans to be part of my identity.

Because everyone I know either knows me as a trans guy or thinks I'm a girl I generally don't shy away from saying things in conversation that point towards me being trans (though I have learned that not talking about my dysphoria helps to not create more of it). So, I'll sometimes call things gender affirming. I hate the term gender affirming because I feel it puts my being trans far more front and center than my being a man. So, what can I do? Do I just keep my mouth shut, or can I word things better?

Heart rate monitoring question

Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a Garmin watch for myself. I have a few different heart and health issues that've lead to my heart rate ranging from just below 30 bpm to a bit below 200 bpm on a normal basis, though my heart rate is in a normal/healthy spot most of the time.

Will my Garmin alert me or anything because of my heart issues? I do not want to be repeatedly woken up at 4 in the morning because my heart rate was low.

Thanks all.

Edit: Solved, thank you!

Summer roommates?

Hey all, when I finish CC I plan on moving out of state to a 4-year university, and I do not want to come back.

How easy is it to get roommates to stay during the summer? I'm sure there'll be some people who also won't want to go back home, or may simply already live in the area, but I doubt the pool of people will be that great. Does anyone have experience with this?

What to do about self transportation when I transfer out of state?

I plan on transferring to a 4-year university out of state once I finish community college, probably not even neighboring with where I currently live and I know I'll need a way to get to doctors appointments without having to repeatedly order ubers or anything.

So, what do I do? Is my only option to buy a car where I'll be moving to?

Can you get into materials science as a chemistry major?

I'm about to go into community college, and will transfer to a 4-year university afterwards. I'll be majoring in chemistry, and one possible career option I'm looking into is materials science. Would I need to change my major? Would there be enough overlap that if I change my major when I transfer that I'll still be able to finish school at the university in 2 years?

Thanks.

Can a chemistry major go into metallurgy?

I'm about to go into community college, and after that I'll be transferring to a 4-year university. My major will be chemistry but one career possibility I'm looking at is metallurgy. Would I have to do a drastic change of major to be able to get into metallurgy or would I be fine with a BS in chem?

Thanks.
