Judge Dread - My DIng A Ling

One can say that novelty track must've quite the colourful history, with the first known recording dating all the way back in 1952, by NOLA bandleader Dave Bartholomew. However, given Berry's pivotal role in the birth of rock 'n' roll, his lone chart-topping hit would be a live track that nearly got him BANNED from UK radio on obscenity charges.

That didn't stop a toy manufacturer in the 1970s from unleashing a toy line with the name Ding-A-Lings. Such a pity that Berry didn't license the song to them so it would have had a better chance to take off

Real airlines in TV drama

This could be the very first time to see an actual airline be featured on a TV drama series. Most of the time it tends to be made-up air carriers like Oceanic Air for Lost.

In Beef, though, you have a real airline - and a national one at that - featured in this scene. Has this ever happened before - where a real carrier would be featured as an important plot device?

What if the Philippines abolished the concept of money and material wealth as a signifier of status?

Is it possible that whoever becomes the next President of the Philippines does away with money and material wealth? Instead, all Filipinos, regardless of educational status or familial background, will be given a card that will be loaded every month with a fixed amount. Accumulation of wealth of any kind will be outlawed.

Said fixed amount will very on a monthly basis depending on national productivity levels. In the meantime, the State will subsidize all electricity and gas usage for all Filipino families.

What do you think? At least, each and every Filipino will be equal, there will be no rich or poor.

What if South Korea takes over the Philippines?

Face it...as long as Filipinos run this country, we can never progress. You got dynastic families that will never budge, a social system held hostage by taboos enacted by a couple of dusty old books written millenia ago and voters with the combined intelligence of dog manure.

How about we get the South Koreans to run the country?

Not the Americans, and NEVER the Chinese!!!!

Sure, you have to deal with mandatory military service, along with nearly everything you own, eat and drink being provided by your friendly neighborhood chaebol, but when they are getting millions employed globally, who's complaining?

Looking for songs by Southern rock/country artists with a distinctively funky vibe

When I rediscovered this track years ago I was amazed by the drum work on this track...definitely changed the way I viewed Southern rock!!!

Starting out at the height of the original British Invasion with "Bus Stop", "Carrie Ann" and "The Air That I Breathe", they would then flirt with 'Murrican swamp boogie with "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" (arguably the best CCR song without John Fogerty).

Then there's this intriguing shuffler from the mid-70s that's definitely primed for the dancefloor...still love this jam to bits

Bay City Rollers - Don't Stop The Music

Scotland 's tartan-clad glam pretty boys get their groove on in this infectious funky number from 1976

As they always say, timing does matter - especially when it comes to music.

When this song first dropped in 1988, it came off as a shining triumph of pure musicianship amidst the frenetic rush of rave stompers and over-produced New Jack fluff glutting UK radio at that time. What was even more miraculous was that it went to #1 in major English-speaking markets like the UK, Ireland and Australia.

In the US, that song reached number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, a cover by country act Baillie & the Boys fared better on the U.S. Country charts, reaching number 23 in 1990.

Come to think of it, a cover of this song would definitely chart high at this point. Maybe frontwoman Eddi Reader can re-record this with whoever US country act is selling (Jelly, Morgan, Luke, even Ella) and get a Fast Car-sized boost in her career

In order to silence all these arguments of certain beauty titlists having unfair "genetic advantages", how about searching for future Bb. Pilipinas candidates from among our indigenous tribes? That way we can assure that those who will be sent to represent us overseas would be 100% Filipino through and through.

>This is the story behind these photos of Michael Jackson guesting on the popular noontime show Student Canteen in 1976 (before "Thriller" and his physical transformation).

________

REMEMBERING THE JACKSON 5's VISIT TO STUDENT CANTEEN

________

.

Before he became the King of Pop, Michael Jackson was the lead singer of a family act from Gary, Indiana, USA. The Jackson 5, later known as The Jacksons, was one of the biggest pop groups in the 1970s.

Almost everyone knew who they were, but few people remember that at the height of the group's success, they visited the Philippines twice.

Eddie Ilarde, the former host of the now-defunct noontime variety show Student Canteen, recalls the warm reception of Filipino fans to the pop superstar when The Jackson 5 visited Manila again in 1976.

(The following Tagalog interview of Eddie Ilarde was taken from a Youtube video of his 24 Oras interview by Aubrey Carampel; transcribed word-for-word by yours truly, #PilipinasRetrostalgiaADMIN ☺)

"Naaalala ko nga iyon, dahil nasira ang aking sasakyan dahil sa dami ng tao. Noong mga panahon na yon, ang GMA ay napakaliit; para kaming nasa sauna room dun sa studio. Walang aircon... may aircon pero hindi kaya dahil sa dami ng tao nung malaman na pupunta si Michael Jackson. Naglagay ang GMA ng monitor sa labas."

--------

Ilarde describes Michael as the friendliest among the brothers, adding that he even talked about Filipinos at a US concert following his recent trip to the Philippines.

--------

"Si Michael Jackson ang pinaka-gracioso (most gracious) sa lahat, parang pinaka-friendly siya. Panay ang ano sa akin, 'Hi Ed! This is our second visit on your program!' "

"A few months after their second visit, nakatanggap ako ng sulat galing sa isang Pilipino na sumulat sa akin na,

'alam mo Kuya Eddie, nagkaroon ng concert si Michael Jackson kasama yung mga kapatid niya. Nung nakita niyang maraming Pilipino dun sa audience, sinabi niya na,

'Hey! I'm very happy to see Filipinos around, you beautiful people! <3 We've just been to Manila and...'

sabi daw ni Michael Jackson,

'... I was very happy and honored to have been invited on Student Canteen on Channel 7.' " ☺

--------

The February concerts were called "Love Jive", a series held at the Folk Arts Theater and the Araneta Coliseum. The group performed on six consecutive days, a concert experience that foreign artists no longer do when they come to perform in the country.

Following the series of concerts in the late 70s, Michael Jackson's next visit to the Philippines was as a solo artist. In December 1996, Michael came back for a historic two-night performance for his worldwide HIStory World Tour.

The tour was to be his final concert tour as a solo artist.

(Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50.)

Before his death, he was slated to have a series of comeback concerts in London.

★PHOTO TRIVIA

February 1976 - Michael Jackson and his brothers' second trip to the Philippines was for a 6-night Valentine's Day Concert titled "Love Jive". These faded photos were taken when The Jacksons guested for the second time in the top rated noontime show Student Canteen. The show had a Michael Jackson sing-a-like contest and Michael himself was the judge and the one to award the winner. Apparently, Michael looked very uncomfortable with the idea of having to select one winner and when the time came, Michael raised BOTH finalists' hands. ☺ Michael also sang "One Day In Your Life" on the popular noontime program.

photos: found on the web; credit to owner (photos enhanced from their original version)

Sorry if it may seem so low-effort here but I am awed that there has been pictorial evidence retained of such a historical moment...the future King Of Pop gracing a noontime show should easily rank up there with The Beatles' Manila concert - minus the disastrous blowback

 3. Children of Dune
 4. God Emperor of Dune

The reason why I am stressing this is because this quartet should teach us to distrust messianic figures. See as Paul Atreides, the scion of a noble family, winds up being adopted by the Fremen of Arrakis as one of their own. As he stands up against the rapacious onset of the Harkonnens and their CHOAM allies, he realises that heavy is the head where rests the crown and relinquishes his role as saviour to wander the deserts where the sandworm roam.

Aaminin ko, mahirap ipapilit magbasa mga Pinoy, palibhasa puro tutok sa TikTok. Certainly, there are quite a number of Filipinos familiar with Frank Herbert's magnum opus (thanks to the Denis Villeneuve films) but the messages he has imparted in the series are just as relevant in this day and age as they were back in the 1960s during their initial publication.
