The two giant Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan had traditional names: the larger statue was called Salsal ("light shines through the universe"), while the smaller one was known as Shahmama ("Queen Mother"). Carved into the cliffs in the 6th century, they stood for over 1,400 years before being destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
