Some police dogs don't fail training because they are weak; they fail because they're just too friendly. Police work demands intense focus, real confidence, and a strong drive to chase, search, or protect on command. Yet not every recruit has that edge, and some simply want to play instead of patrol. A dog that gets distracted by every passing stranger, or greets a suspect like a long-lost friend, isn't exactly cut out for the force. So when that happens, trainers pull them from the programme, opening the door to adoption. Not every rejected recruit ends up in a family home, since some return to breeders or move into other specialist roles instead. But several police forces do run proper rehoming programmes for the dogs that do not make the cut. So somewhere out there, a dog once labelled too friendly for crime fighting might be curled up on a couch right now, guarding nothing more than the remote control. They failed police school. But they passed the good boy test with flying colors.

Senator Mitch McConnell has kept his full salary for more than two months while recovering from a June fall, according to Newsweek. That's more paid time off than most women who give birth in his home state of Kentucky can count on. McConnell was hospitalized in mid-June, moved to rehab, and was discharged in early August to keep recovering at home. He has stayed on the federal payroll the entire time. Congress has no official paid sick leave policy, so members can draw their salary indefinitely while on medical leave. Meanwhile, millions of American women who give birth each year have no guaranteed paid maternity leave, Newsweek reports. Beth Wanner, founder of Mother Cover, said the comparison extends beyond pay. Margaret Quinlan, a professor and director of the Health and Medical Humanities program at UNC Charlotte, told Newsweek McConnell's leave shows what a humane response to a health event looks like: time, pay, and job security -- calling it an exhausting irony that Americans recovering from childbirth cannot count on those same protections. McConnell's office says he continues to need recovery time; he has lived with lasting effects of childhood polio. Supporters say he deserves whatever time is necessary. Critics say it shows how unequally recovery is treated depending on who you are. There is still no federal law guaranteeing paid sick leave or paid parental leave for American workers. Congress can take fully paid medical leave without limit, but has never extended that guarantee to the people it represents.

Scientists have detected evidence of landslides on Pluto for the first time. A paper published in the journal Icarus reports that images taken by the New Horizons spacecraft during a flyby revealed six large landslides in three impact craters.

These mass movements of ice, rock and debris are common on Earth and have been detected elsewhere in our solar system, including Mars and Ceres, a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. But evidence from icy Pluto has been nonexistent until now, even though it has steep crater walls and rugged icy terrain where landslides could occur.
