Risk-averse parents with no financial portfolio or retirement planning
It seems like ever since I was born, my parents have been paying off some form of debt and barely investing.
In the early 2000s, they got duped into buying some stocks by some family members and lost their investment. They then gathered some money and came to Canada, and ever since then, every single moment of their lives has been about paying the bills.
The only investments I think they have made are my RESP, a plot of land, and some ounces of gold from TD Precious Metals.
Not a single dime into an ETF, stocks, bonds, or GICs. I think their life consists of paying off their mortgages and credit card bills. I know that different people have different risk tolerances, but it seems like they are of an older generation(especially of an immigrant background), and they have no idea how to invest money.
They also made a poor decision to mortgage one house to get another house.
Now I am left wondering how the hell they will plan for retirement. They don't even have an RRSP and a TFSA set up.
It has put a bit of pressure on me, because I fear that they think life will be all fine and dandy the minute I graduate from college. How should I deal with this?
