Using two characters—Terminyanator and Supernyan—from the same series, Yo-kai Watch, as examples of “bad” and “good.”
Starting with the "bad" example—Terminyanator is an obvious reference to the T-800 from Terminator and much like it's name, I think it's design is a way to on the nose. They feel more like they're just flat out cosplaying them.
As for the "good" example—Supernyan is a reference to Superman from DC and I think it's design is much better. Making the inspection clear with the color scheme and symbol but actually adding differences like the mask. If the latter was designed like the former, they would've just slapped on Clark's hair too.
Thoughts?
Characters like the Overlords who were important enough to get names but wouldn't be relevant enough to get backstories.
