Album review: Mike D will release Thank You this month

On August 24, Michael “Mike D” Diamond will release his first official solo album, and the first new music—aside from a guest appearance—from a member of the Beastie Boys since the legendary trio’s 2011 release Hot Sauce Comittee Part 2. It’s been 15 years since the group met its untimely end.  The untimely passing of Adam “MCA” Yauch forced the remaining two members into a seemingly permanent musical hiatus...

Live music review: Black Moth Super Rainbow set weekend vibe at Radio East

It’s been an uncomfortable year between perimenopause and aging and three different car wrecks, so forgive me for not keeping up with the setlist for Friday’s bad-ass Black Moth Super Rainbow (BMSR) show at Radio East. I’m thankful that it’s near my house and a delightful place to see an outdoor show, so even if I’m feeling oddly antisocial, I can typically make myself get out to see a show there. Even at my most awkward, I wasn’t missing this BMSR show, and I’m glad I...

Live music review: Legendary punks ALL played Chicago’s Thalia Hall for a rare treat

Whenever someone goes to see Descendents or ALL, there’s one universal truth: we’re all there, at least in part, to pay homage to Bill Stevenson, a legendary punk rock pioneer. The band played Chicago’s Thalia Hall on Wednesday, August 5...

Live music review: Tomahawk and Melvins descended on a sold-out Emo’s

Mike Patton has spent three decades collecting bands like other people collect vinyl, and every one of them draws the same crowd, showing up less for the setlist than for whatever version of Patton decides to appear. This time it was Nashville’s Tomahawk, and the Monday, July 20 stop at Emo’s Austin sold out fast. After a canceled Sick New World Festival in 2025 for the band’s 25th anniversary, Tomahawk’s reunion after 12 years off took a backseat until now.

Live music review: Hardcore music festival The Rumble featured Hatebreed, Turmoil and more

On Friday, July 17 as part of the annual festival The Rumble, Turmoil made their way back to Chicago for a triumphant return, playing songs from The Process Of and giving it everything they had in the process. I felt like a kid again, bobbing to the riffs of “Let It Die” while screaming along to the opening salvo of the hardest intro of all time, yelling “what the fuck?” alongside frontman John Gula...

Live music review: Flagman brought deep fried alt metal to Lost Well

Seattle-by-way-of-Orlando trio Flagman made their way south this summer to deliver their slap-bass mayhem to Austin metal stronghold Lost Well on July 16 – the second stop on their summer tour to spread their self-proclaimed brand of “deep-fried alt-metal.” Formed in 2015 around frontman and bass virtuoso Sam Stewart, the band has rotated through members over the years while keeping the bassist as the focal point of their roadshow. Since the dawn of the doomscroll era, artists and brands alike have been riding the algorithm to rack up streams and hopefully, enough chump change for Denny’s on the road. If you’re a Primus guy or a Mr. Bungle kind of weirdo, this band is for you.

The Wynton Marsalis Septet live at Red Butte Gardens Amphitheater

Wynton Marsalis performing live at Red Butte Garden Amphitheater in Salt Lake City on Wednesday. It was a seminal performance as evidenced by the short clip provided.

The show was briefly paused due to nearby storms which caused wind gusts that blew sheet music and mics around the stage. After a short break, the group returned to finish the performance. Most of audience stayed through the delay to see this New Orleans trumpet legend and his band perform.

Live music review: Billy Strings returned to stage for Austin City Limits TV taping

Flat-picking mega star Billy Strings returned to the stage for his first full-band gig since April after busting his leg doing an ill-fated skateboard trick backstage at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. After an unintentional break, Strings and his associates returned to ACL Live for Season 52 of Austin City Limits TV. For each consecutive season of the long-running PBS program, there is a show or two that sees high demand, with tons of hopeful fans waiting in line hoping to get a spot for the coveted performances. This was one of those...

Live music preview: Stoner metal act Bong Wizard comes to Ace’s High Saloon Wednesday

This Wednesday, July 1, Houston stoner metal act Bong Wizard comes to Salt Lake City metal haven Ace’s High Saloon. The power trio will bring new music from their latest, Transilvanian Munchies which was just released four days ago. The group is essentially a parody band, taking black metal classics and making them their own with sludgy, doom metal treatments to the songs. The thing is, despite Bong Wizard’s irreverence, their music is...

Interview: Austin artist Shakey Graves is coming to Utah Arts Festival with a great new record

When The Cosmic Clash got to Salt Lake City one of the first annual events we heard about was the Utah Arts Festival. We were duly impressed that a city SLC’s size, invested so heavily in visual art, music and literature. There were panels, live music and tons of visual artists represented. It seemed like the story of Salt Lake’s Mormon monoculture was exaggerated fiction. In town, at least culturally it kind of is. The city founded by Mormons has more similarities to Austin, Texas than it does to the Vatican; Blue dot in a red sea, state capitol, big public university north of downtown? Sounds like ATX. We learned the UAF is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, doubling down on quality musical headliners including…
