Japan ranks #3 in a small global mood experiment — does 6.9/10 sound right to you?I've been looking at a small dataset of 5,976 anonymous mood reports from around the world, where people rate how they feel from 1 to 10 and can leave a short comment.

Japan currently averages 6.90/10 (n=41), placing it third among countries with at least 40 responses.

What I find even more interesting are the comments on the map. Some people mention being tired or bored, while others talk about enjoying their work or looking forward to holidays.

Of course, this is a small, self-selected sample, not a representative survey of Japan.

For those living in Japan, does 6.9/10 feel about right? Or surprisingly high?

Mood2know, a 7-Month Update

Here’s the updated World Mood infographic, based on 5,907 mood entries across six continents:

🥇 Oceania: 6.26 → 6.21 (−0.05)
🥈 Asia: 6.09 → 6.14 (+0.05)
🥉 Europe: 6.11 → 6.13 (+0.02)
4. Africa: 6.02 → 6.03 (+0.01)
5. North America: 5.80 → 5.76 (−0.04)
6. South America: 5.95 → 5.74 (−0.21)

These averages reflect voluntary contributions to mood2know, not representative samples of each continent’s population. Entries aren’t necessarily unique participants, and sample sizes vary considerably.

The illustration was created with AI; all figures were calculated from the collected data and verified.

Friday evening is the saddest part of the week?

I took the latest 5,951 Mood2Know submissions and converted every entry to the participant’s local time before grouping moods by weekday and time of day.

The pattern is pretty striking:

Friday evening is the lowest point
Sunday afternoon/evening is among the highest
Monday morning stays surprisingly high

As always, this is a self-selected sample, not a representative survey - but it’s a fun pattern to keep watching as more moods come in.

Sunday is still the happiest day 🌍

Updated with 5,935 anonymous moods worldwide.

Sunday still comes out on top: 6.19/10, just ahead of Monday.

Friday is now the lowest at 5.63/10.

Mood2Know data is starting to travel on its own 🌍

Small project update 🌍

Mood2Know data has started being shared outside the project itself, including by statistics / knowledge accounts on X, Instagram and Threads.

I’ve spotted reposts or adaptations from stats_feed (X), quick_knowledge_ (Instagram), knowledgeworld4615 (Thread) and u/global_statistics__ (Instagram).

Pretty fun to see the data starting to travel on its own.

Mood2Know data is starting to travel on its own 🌍

A small but pretty cool milestone for Mood2Know.

I discovered that an Instagram account had taken data from the project and turned it into its own infographic - 5,822 anonymous moods across 29 countries.

I didn't make the graphic and didn't know the creator.

Seeing someone independently find the dataset interesting enough to visualize it feels like a nice little milestone for the project.

Hopefully the beginning of more people exploring what the world is feeling. 🌍

I made the world mood map talk: you can now see what people around the world are actually feeling

I’ve been building Mood2Know, a side project where people anonymously share their mood (1–10) and, optionally, a short message.

The messages were already there, but until now they were mostly hidden behind individual mood entries.

I’ve just changed that.

1. You can now see people’s messages directly on the world map 🌍

Zoom around and you’ll see little snapshots of what people are experiencing right now — from “Great day” and “AMAZING” to “Just existing”, “I’m tired” or “Afraid of the future.”

2. After submitting your own mood, you can browse the recent messages as a feed.

I really like how this changes the project. It’s no longer just a map of numbers and smileys — you can actually read the little stories behind them.

Everything remains anonymous and free.

I’d love some feedback: does seeing the messages make the map feel more alive, or is it getting too crowded?

I added world events to my mood chart until it looked like I understood geopolitics

5,877 voluntary mood check-ins. A rolling average of 100 observations. Then I looked up whatever happened on the dates where the line changed direction.

Correlation: untested.
Causation: not established.

I was curious whether U.S. presidents really are getting older, so I plotted the age of every president when they first took office.

For most of U.S. history, presidents were remarkably concentrated around their 50s. The recent jump really stands out.

Theodore Roosevelt: 42
Joe Biden: 78
Donald Trump in 2025: 78

What surprised me most is how unusual the last few inaugurations look compared with the previous 200+ years.

How to play:

I’ll start 10 comment chains: Group 1 → Group 10.
Players 1–9 each reply with ONE letter.
Player 10 must make the longest English word possible using only those letters.
You don't have to use every letter.
Each letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the chain.

Example:

A → R → T → E → S → P → L → N → O

I analyzed 5,785 anonymous mood responses collected on a 0–10 scale. To avoid rankings based on very small samples, I included only countries with at least 100 responses.

France and the Netherlands recorded the highest averages among the qualifying countries.

This is a self-selected online sample and is not representative of national populations. It should be viewed as a descriptive snapshot rather than a scientific ranking.

Feedback on the visualization and methodology is welcome.
