How do I respectfully address a mechanic that was negligent and didn’t fix the issue?

Pretty much what the title says. I had a mechanic work on my car -not only was the issue not fixed, but the car was worse after picking it up.

I tried to have him re-check his work, but he kept saying it must be another problem with the car.

It took me paying for a diagnoses of the first mechanics work at another shop to get confirmation that the first guy installed at least one wrong part and could have damaged the car if I had continued driving it.

The original mechanic continued to deny that he made a mistake, but finally accepted a refund on the wrong part and refunded me.

However, the car is still not running right, so he hasn’t fixed the issue. I’m assuming it’s the other part he put in, since I now realize how absolutely clueless he is with more technical repairs.

I want to approach him about the fact that the car is still not running right, and even ask him to potentially return/refund that second part as well.

However, he has gaslit me so much throughout this process, on top of being unwilling to double check or warranty his work or the parts.

I would like to get the remainder of my money back since he didn’t resolve the issue, and now I have a $650 useless part I’ve paid for, not including labor.

I’m going to need to start fresh with another -more reputable - shop.

Any advice on how to handle this very uncomfortable situation appreciated!

Perfectionism and Changes - can anyone relate?

Does anyone have intense distress around if something you own gets even a small defect. This isn’t all objects I own, but many - especially newer items.

I also get distressed over things not being straight or a certain way. For example, I purchased a gift card the other day for a friend, and the worker put the security sticker on crooked. I became highly distressed. Or perhaps I’m writing in a greeting card, and I notice the whole thing I wrote is at an angle. I can’t let it go.

Not so much a perfectionist thing, but I struggle with things that change in manufacturing. Which is hard, as things are always changing. Whether it be the fit/material of a shirt brand/style, a change in label, the look of an item, etc. I now purchase multiple of the same thing sometimes if I like it, so I have back ups. I’ve gone so far as to hunt the original items down on eBay often.

Has anyone had similar experiences and success managing these issues?

Thank you.

OCD around perfectionism?

I have been diagnosed with mostly pure OCD, and some that manifests physically.

Are thoughts or distress around perfectionism a specific form of OCD. Like if something I own gets even a small defect, I get very distressed. This isn’t all objects I own, but many - especially newer items.

Driveshaft and mechanic troubles - looking for advice.

2006 w 187k. I have had major issues with a mechanic that replaced my front and rear driveshafts with aftermarket parts. The reason I had them replaced, was there were signs the front one was done, and the rear one was on its way out. Yes, I now know thanks to these forums that I could have kept my OEM parts and had the joints replaced.

I picked up my car after the repair and the entire car was violently shaking at highway speeds. Long story short, the mechanic denied an issue with the new parts, and I had to pay for a secondary diagnoses by another mechanic. They focused on the rear as it seemed after driving it, that was likely the culprit. I didn’t have them check the front driveshaft, though I should have in retrospect.

They said the slip yoke appeared to be seized on output shaft of transmission, and no free movement for the driveshaft to move (slip) freely during travel. It has destroyed u-joint at the rear dif. I also had to pay to have it towed back to the original mechanic, as the vibration was so bad - I was told continuing to drive it could damage surrounding parts.

After a lot of bs, with the original mechanic that I will spare you, as I did initially try and have them warranty the part, they agreed to put my old OEM rear driveshaft back on and refund me the rear part/labor. When I picked up the car, they randomly informed me the rear driveshaft they purchased was a few inches longer than my OEM. I am looking for confirmation that this is an issue and likely was causing the issues diagnosed by the first mechanic. They also tried to tell me the rear u-joint was not damaged, but as far as I know it should not be moving in such a stiff jolty way. I’ll include a video of the rear u-joint vs the front u-joint for reference. Can someone confirm for me a u-joint should be moving more freely?

My car is vibrating much less with the rear OEM driveshaft, but still vibrating and not running right. I called a trusted transmission shop who offered to try and replace the u-joints on my OEM parts, as they work with a powertrain shop on town.

I want to go back to the original mechanic once more and discuss the issues with the rear part they installed, and also ask them to remove and refund me for the front driveshaft as I have zero competence the part or installation is correct, and it might be causing the issue.

Either that, or I wait to have the transmission shop diagnose, repair, and if there is an issue with the front driveshaft, go back to them then and ask for a refund.

I don’t want the original shop doing any more work on my car, which is why I am going to push for a refund. I have to start new with the other shop for diagnoses fees/repairs, etc.

I have had a lot of feedback that the situation with the first mechanic was negligence.

I appreciate any input on this matter.

Deck condition? Worth sanding before re-staining?

Reposting this with some close up photos.

Ten year old deck, but the boards are very dry, chipped, etc. Would like to get a few more years out before replacing it. Was planning to soft-wash and stain, however one contractor I spoke with mentioned I should sand in-between. Is it worth the money/time to sand a deck this shot? Thanks.

Empress/Princess tree eradication advice?

Our forest took a big hit from hurricane Helene in NC. I don’t know if we had a few of these empress/princess trees before, but they have definitely taken the opportunity to start growing in some clearings. My concern after reading about them, and watching them, is how fast they grow and spread. I am afraid these are going to start taking over before some of the native trees have a chance.

I’ve read mixed reviews on how to deal with these. The root structures are huge, I don’t know if we can get a machine up there to get them out, due to the incline. Is the next best bet to cut them down and paint the stump with a systemic herbicide. I was also told you could potentially inject the tree to kill it before cutting it down. I read one person cut theirs and they ended up having others pop up around it from the original root system (not sure if this actually happens).

I’m unfamiliar with these trees and appreciate any advice to get on top of them before they get out of control.

Thank you! 🌱

Star Cactus Rescue Advice

Hey there, my plant was doing great for the past two years. Was watering when dry, but I must have overwatered it. It was getting adequate light. Suddenly it was looking awful. I salvaged what I could. Can I transplant these pieces? A few have roots and a few don’t. Should I let the bottoms harden off for a few days and then stick back in the soil . Thank you!

New CV Axles- do these look ok?

Paid to have new CV axles installed on the front L/R of my car. I looked under the car today and noticed they look a little rough. They have only been on there a few weeks. Are these actually new parts? Does the install look ok? Thank you.

Novice hear - why does my front driveshaft look like this?

Why is my front driveshaft dented in like this. Long story short, I had front driveshaft replaced by mechanic , and am having trouble with the aftermarket part. They gave me my OEM one back. Why are there indentations on this front part (not sure of the technical name)? Thanks.

Driveshaft length when replacing - OEM to aftermarket?

I had new aftermarket rear and front driveshafts installed on my 2016 Jeep Liberty, 186k. After pickup, I noticed heavy vibration. Long story short, after getting a diagnosis from a secondary shop that there was an issue with the new rear driveshaft part or install, I had the original mechanic take the aftermarket one off and put my old one back on (still has some life in it). This has decreased the vibration immensely, although I’m still suspecting some issue with the new front driveshaft as well. When I picked up the car, they went out of their way to show me that my OEM driveshaft was substantially shorter by a few inches than the one they ordered and installed. I have no idea why they pointed this out to me. After doing research - am I correct that replacement driveshafts should be the same length as OEM, and could this have been causing the binding and heavy vibrations. The vibration was so bad, the second mechanic that looked at it advised me not to drive it, as not to cause any damage to surrounding parts - so I had it towed back to the original shop.

Should replacement driveshafts be the same length as the OEM? Is there any likelihood damage was done for the 30 minutes of driving I did with aftermarket one in?

Thanks!

Driveshaft wear and replacement - advice?

Has anyone successfully replaced their driveshafts with aftermarket parts and not had any issues with vibrations, etc.

Been in a mess trying to get driveshafts successfully repaired/replaced on a 2006 with 186k, and am just now learning that aftermarket driveshafts on Liberty’s can be hit or miss.

Would appreciate any experience or pro knowledge in this area. Thank you.

Inquiry into deck staining estimates?

What am I looking at for a fair estimate to hire someone to re-stain a 250 sq ft platform deck? No stairs, no balusters (hog wire). I live in the southeast - rural area. The deck will be professionally cleaned/soft washed prior to staining. I am supplying the stain. Stain I am using calls for one coat. Just looking for some input here on what is a reasonable going rate these days. Thank you.

Trouble in paradise with therapist - disassociation (DPDR) and IFS/Parts. Any advice?

I’ve been with my current therapist three years now. The past few months I’ve been heavily struggling with my mental health - so much so that I’m looking into a residential treatment or an IOP. My therapist knows what a sensitive state I’ve been in and that I also struggle heavily with DPDR and pure ocd.

Yesterday during our session I mentioned how terrified I am of being stuck with DPDR forever. And instead of giving me reassurance that this is something that can be worked through, she tells me that she feels that “part” will always be there. I guess from her viewpoint, a very practical answer.

She likes IFS work, so this is what she was referring to. I dislike IFS, as I take parts very literally and not metaphorically. I should note we were not doing any parts work at the time, nor is this a modality I have chosen to use, except a few times it’s come up in conversation.

Well this comment scared me to death and I can not stop thinking about what she said. I feel almost betrayed. I feel scared - as this isn’t Joe Shmoe on the street saying this to me, but a professional I trusted. I understand that she was coming at it from the IFS framework, however considering my state I don’t think that was the answer I needed at the time.

It concerns me that after three years and with her having a trauma informed background, that she was not more aware of her use of language and her approach. I understand that without having experienced DPDR, folks cannot truly understand how difficult it can be.

Can anyone tell me how you would feel if this happened with your therapist? I’m just at a loss.
