PSA: emergency contraception for those over 165lbs

Saw someone ask about this and thought I'd just make a PSA cuz not just OP needs to know about it.

All emergency contraception is better than no emergency contraception, but...
If you take an emergency contraception pill with levonorgestrel (like Plan B One Step, Take Action, My Way, and others) and you weigh more than 165 pounds, it won't work as well.

ella is another emergency contraception pill that may work better for you. But if you weigh 195 pounds or more, ella won't work as well.

No matter how much you weigh, certain IUDs work as emergency contraception if you get it inserted within 120 hours (5 days) after having unprotected sex. This is the most effective type of emergency contraception. An IUD has to be put in by a doctor, nurse, or other health care provider. You can contact your nearest Planned Parenthood health center to find out more about getting an IUD.

Is Google just going to buy everything?

I've been transitioning off Google for awhile now and my biggest lift will be transferring all my files from Google Drive. Currently I'm using Proton but I mentioned this to a friend the other day and they were like "if enough people switch to Proton, Google will just buy them" and I brushed it off but now I'm wondering if they're right. Are we going to make all this effort to switch shit for Google to just buy them once they're popular enough?

Gendered restrooms were created by Big Restroom to create more restrooms

Between the women's and men's restrooms, there is a surplus of urinals/toilets, but by socially constructing the need for gendered restrooms, buildings will pay Big Restroom extra to build a second restroom that's never full (men's).

Are there any places that offer salt float baths in rooms instead of tanks/pods? Here's a photo for reference.

NSFW advice

Sorry if you guys are tired of seeing my username ask for sex advice but I am new-ish to sex so ya they has a lot of questions.

I am AFAB/bottom and dating someone AMAB/top. I am short and small fat and he is tall and big fat. He has an apron belly and all of the plus size people I've been with have had bellies that stick out so this is a new experience for me. My assumption is that there's not really anything to "know" on my end. He's had sex before so he knows what his body can and can't do. I've had sex before and know what I can and can't do. All bodies are different and I've managed to figure things out with everyone else so far.

That being said I am disabled and my body can mostly move the way a non-disabled body can, but occasionally it can't and I wish non-disabled people were more cognizant that they're making assumptions of how sex will go based on a normative non-disabled conception of sex. So...AMABs or tops with apron bellies, is there anything you wish your partners knew about having sex with your body beforehand?

Singer said it was disappointing that a speaking tour that was meant to be about the benefits of "effective altruism" has instead become focussed on infanticide.

What do I do with extra meds?

I no longer take a medicine (quetiapine) and don't know what to do with it. Is there somewhere in the city like a pharmacy that will take it?

Women's haircut surcharge

I am a women who had shaved hair for years and just decided to grow it out. I've only had long and shaved hair, but I figured it would make the most sense to get my short hair cut at a barbers since it was cheaper and most of their clientele have that length. Some of them wouldn't even take me because I was a woman and they didn't do "women's haircuts" (I was asking for a trim not to have flowers braided into my hair or whatever tf they think a women's haircut was). Now it's so long it makes more sense to go to a salon, but it's got me thinking... do men with long hair get turned down by barbers? Which led me to my final question, is the surcharge for salon's or "women's haircuts" for something or is it just a classic pink tax? It'd be one thing if it took more skill to cut longer hair, but in my years of trimming friend's hair, I've found it a lot easier to not mess up long hair than short hair (not that either are easy, cutting hair is a very skilled trade) so that feels hard to believe.

My hottest take

The medical community has acknowledged that BMI is not an accurate measurement of weight/fat-related health. So any study that uses BMI to assess the relationship between weight/fat and health is invalid. Period.

P.S. Practicality of alternative measurements does not affirm the accuracy of a current one. "But how else?" does not negate my claim.

Ex-Republicans shouldn’t be welcomed with open arms

I wrote this awhile ago and decided not to post it because I felt like white men were going to run into the comments with some class reductionist ass takes accusing me of IdPol* (not cuz DSA is full of those kinds of people, but because Reddit is) and I didn’t want to deal with their willfully ignorant opinions. But since what’s his face‘s SV allegations went public, I decided it’s worth saying.

There is a conservative to libertarian to socialist pipeline (that, in my decade of political organizing, seems to only happen with white men, so that’s who this post is about).

A lot of them find their way to DSA, probably because we have no requirements to join our organization and almost anyone left of the Democrats is welcome. That’s awesome. I am so glad their disillusionment has led them to DSA and not the manosphere. But the vast majority of them jump straight from libertarian to socialism (or even conservative to socialism) without doing any deconstruction of their internalized racism and sexism. And boy is it showing in this moment.

Until they do that work, they should be treated with skepticism. They should not be welcomed with open arms into our meetings or campaigns or socials, because when they are, they cause harm to poc, women, trans men, and enbys and then we leave and we lose more people (with more revolutionary potential) than we gain. Someone who wants universal healthcare is not a comrade, they are a potential comrade. Someone who wants universal liberation is a comrade. And achieving universal liberation requires understanding and rejecting racial and gender hierarchy, because those are two major ways capitalism functions. Until these new members do that work and we compel them to do that work, we will keep seeing wild takes like “it’s anti-socialist to give a r*pist institutional power if they might get us kind of universal healthcare” (which is mostly from random people on Reddit, but also a non-zero portion of people who actually participate in DSA).

P.S. Solidarity with all SV victims everywhere. You didn’t deserve it, you dealt with it the best you could, we believe you, you are not alone.

*I forgot about the internet people who can’t hold nuance and think having any standards is a purity tests.

Poi Sonai is being marginalized by white supremacist AIs

I recently found out that Hawai'in DJ, Poi Sonai, is being confused with something called poison AI. It's really sad to see another artist of color being marginalized by bigoted tech that reflects the racist biases of their creators. Personally, if I was Poi Sonai, I would sue, but we all know that people of color experience disproportionate discrimination in courts so I understand why she hasn't done so. I hope DJ Poi Sonai's reach is not negatively affected by this offensive confusion.

How long do I need to wash my body?

So in 2020 we all learned we need to spend 20 seconds washing our hands to effectively wash off the bacteria. Does that mean I need to wash each part of my body for 20 seconds when I shower or I'm not effectively cleaning myself?

NSFW advice

Please do not respond with unsupportive comments about how can I possibly be attracted to someone who isn't CC or whatever. I have spent 6 years CC and 6 years contemplating whether it was worth the romantic/sexual loneliness and I've decided I need to find an in between because the effects on my mental health are too severe. If that upsets you, you can journal about it. Shaming me for it is not going to do anything besides hurt someone that is part of your community.

I am dating/having sex again and surprise surprise none of the apps have CC people (yes I've tried the CC apps but I live in a country/city with like 5 people on each of them). I have met someone that I am considering having sex with and am not sure how to proceed.

I've decided I'm unwilling to kiss (and unwilling to not mask if we have sex indoors). But I don't know how to naturally transition from something like cuddling to sex without kissing. I could of course just say "I want to have sex now" (and at some point I would verbally ask for consent because active consent is important yada yada, but that's a lot different when it's obviously headed that direction as opposed to when you have no idea if that's even on this person's mind cuz you guys are just watching TV on the couch). But that violates a social norm and knowing that I'm already violating two (not kissing and masking), I'm worried about violating anymore. Does anyone have experience making this transition without kissing and without being extremely blunt and have advice on what worked or what didn't work?
