Heads up: Montlake Boulevard and several SR 520 ramps will close this weekend (Aug. 21-24)

Heads up: Montlake Boulevard and several SR 520 ramps will close this weekend (Aug. 21-24)

If you use Montlake Boulevard or the SR 520 ramps in the Montlake area, plan for a weekend closure starting Friday night, Aug. 21.

From 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, to 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, Montlake Boulevard will close between East Hamlin Street and East Louisa Street, along with several nearby streets and SR 520 ramps.

So, what exactly is closing?

  • Montlake Boulevard on-ramps to eastbound and westbound SR 520
  • Eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard
  • A 300-foot section of East Roanoke Street west of Montlake Boulevard
  • Lake Washington Boulevard between Montlake Boulevard and 24th Avenue East

The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to northbound Montlake Boulevard will remain open.

People walking, biking and rolling will still be able to cross SR 520 on Montlake Boulevard, with a limited detour south of SR 520.

What will crews be up to?

During the weekend closure, crews will install three new mast-arm sign structures and mount new signs on them. They'll also remove the large sign bridge spanning Montlake Boulevard just south of SR 520 and install a new southbound sign north of SR 520 on an existing utility pole.

If you're traveling through Montlake this weekend, give yourself extra time, check the real-time travel map and consider alternate routes.

Whidbey Island travelers: SR 20 is going down to one lane for 19 days

If you travel SR 20 south of Anacortes, especially if you’re headed to or from Whidbey Island, you’ll want to plan ahead and give yourself extra time over the next 19 days.

Starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, SR 20 will be reduced to one lane near Campbell Lake Road. An automated traffic signal will alternate traffic through the intersection around the clock until 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.

During the 19-day lane reduction, crews will grade the intersection in preparation for a new roundabout planned for 2027. So, what does “grade” actually mean? In this case, crews will bring in material to build up lower areas and reshape the intersection for the future roundabout. Similar to my stomach after a large meal… all that new material needs some time to settle. In this case, the settling and stabilization process takes about six months over the winter.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • One lane of SR 20 with traffic alternating in both directions, 24/7
  • Delays, especially during busier travel times
  • A reduced 40 mph speed limit near the intersection
  • Travelers to or from Whidbey Island can also consider the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry
  • If you’re headed to the Anacortes or Coupeville ferry terminals, give yourself extra time to get there

After the 19-day lane reduction ends, SR 20 will return to its previous configuration, including the eastbound SR 20 left-turn lane to Campbell Lake Road and the acceleration lane.

We know this will add time to some trips over the next 19 days, but it’s an important step toward a future roundabout designed to improve safety at the intersection. In the meantime, plan ahead, give yourself some wiggle room and check real-time conditions before you head out.

So much to do, so much to see! The Aug. 14-17 paint map is here!

The maps start coming and they don’t stop coming. So much to do, so much to see, so perhaps consider taking the backstreets? Or whatever Smash Mouth said.

It’s WSU Pullman’s Move-In weekend for the Cougs and its Bass Canyon weekend for the ravers. We’ve got some road work y’all should know about. The I-90 Vantage Bridge is still reduced one lane in both directions, so leave early, consider alternate routes and expect delays. To the Cougs, safe travels to Pullman! To the rave babies, safe travels to the Gorge!

Westsiders! We’ve got a busy weekend of sports, fairs, concerts and closures up ahead. Whether you’re headed into town, out of town, or just attempting to get around town, here are a few things to know:

- We’ve got the ongoing Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge. The express lanes are northbound 24/7.

- NB SR 99 will CLOSE at the 1st Ave S Bridge from 5a Sat. to 11:59p Sun. for bridge and structure preservation. During this closure you will not be able to access E Marginal Way or Michigan St. from the bridge or continue NB on SR 99.

- The SR 99 tunnel will also CLOSE in both directions in Seattle from 10p Fri. to 6a Sat. for tunnel maintenance.

- NE 85th St and I-405 ramps will close between 6th St and 124th Ave NE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. to grade pavement and install curbs. Ramp closure details:the NB & SB I-405 on- and off-ramps at Exit 18 will close.

Ferry riders, you’re part of the busy weekend too! Expect more travelers on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route as people head to and from the San Juan County Fair through Aug. 16. Plan for delays and long lines, especially for interisland travel.

Then, starting at 6a Mon, Aug. 17, SR 20 near Campbell Lake Road will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic 24/7 thru Sept. 4 while crews prepare for a new roundabout. The work is on a key route between Anacortes and Whidbey Island, so ferry travelers should plan for additional travel time.

So before you get your game on and go play, check the real-time travel map, give yourself extra time and make a plan. You’ll never know if you don’t go, but you’ll have a better idea of what you’re getting into if you check the map first.

Déjà vu, Kirkland? I-405/NE 85th is closing again this weekend.

Hey, Kirkland. If it feels like you've lived through this before... you have. Last weekend, to be exact. And we're back for round two this weekend with another I-405/NE 85th St. interchange closure from Aug. 14-17.

Here's what's closing:

Starting as early as 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17:

  • The northbound and southbound I-405 on- and off-ramps at Exit 18 will close.
  • NE 85th Street will close between Sixth Street and 124th Avenue NE.

Basically, you won’t be able to get on or off I-405 at NE 85th Street for the weekend, and you won’t be able to travel through the interchange on NE 85th.

Here's what we'll be up to:

While the closure looks familiar, the work is different this time around. Last weekend, crews prepared the foundation for the new 114th Avenue NE roundabout and connected the new roadway to the existing lower level of NE 85th Street. This weekend, crews will grade pavement and install curbs as work continues as part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project

How to get around it:

Signed detours will be in place (check out the attached map for a look at the detour route), but if NE 85th is normally part of your route, give yourself some extra time and expect more traffic on nearby streets and interchanges.

The SR 14 West Camas Slough Bridge deck is finally getting a full refresh

Say goodbye to THIS.

The SR 14 West Camas Slough Bridge is getting a makeover.

Starting today (Aug. 10), crews began work to repair and repave the driving surface of the bridge connecting Camas and Washougal. For years, crews have made temporary repairs, but traffic and weather have continued to wear down the bridge.

This project is more than a patch job. Crews will remove the old pavement, repair the bridge deck where needed, install a new waterproofing layer and repave the roadway.

What does that mean for travelers?

- Most work will happen overnight on weekdays, with one direction of SR 14 closed at a time. The bridge will remain open in both directions during the day.

- A weekend closure is planned from Friday night, Aug. 14, through Monday morning, Aug. 17. Only one direction of the bridge will be closed at a time, with signed detours through Camas and Washougal.

Let's take a moment to say goodbye to those ROUGH ROAD signs and get ready to enjoy a smoother ride ahead.

SR 291 REOPENED between Spokane and Suncrest

SR 291 has REOPENED.

After more than a week of closures, SR 291 has fully reopened between Spokane and Suncrest. The highway had been closed between Assembly Street and 7 Mile Road, and between Rutter Parkway and Swenson Road due to the Spokane Complex Fires.

Before reopening, our crews worked with the Cal 7 fire incident management team to make sure the highway was safe for travel. Crews used a drone to survey slope stability and removed dozens of hazardous trees along the corridor. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the reopening possible.

While reopening SR 291 is an important step, we know communities throughout the area continue to face the impacts of the Spokane Complex Fires as response efforts continue.

Fire response efforts continue in the area. Please allow extra travel time, watch for firefighters entering the highway from side roads and be cautious of reduced visibility.

Level 3 evacuations may still be in place along portions of SR 291. A reopened highway does not mean evacuation orders have been lifted. Please check Spokane County's evacuation information before traveling into affected areas and continue to follow directions from emergency personnel.

Conditions can change quickly as fire response continues. Check our real-time travel map for current conditions and stay alert while traveling through the area.

SR 155 and US 97 are OPEN. SR 291 remains CLOSED. Here's the latest.

As communities across Central and Eastern Washington continue to face the impacts of these devastating wildfires, here are the latest updates on state highways affected by fire and smoke.

SR 155 IS OPEN AS OF 12 P.M. TODAY

After being closed for nearly three weeks due to the Kaiser Fire, SR 155 has reopened.

Fire crews remain active along SR 155, and an advisory speed limit of 45 mph is in effect through the 30-mile corridor. Please allow extra travel time, watch for firefighters and emergency vehicles entering the highway from side roads and be prepared for reduced visibility.

Thank you to our crews, incident management teams and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation for helping safely reopen SR 155. Dozens of burned trees were removed, and guardrail repairs will continue. For current Kaiser Fire and evacuation information visit the link in the comments below. Please follow emergency responder directions.

US 97 BLEWETT PASS IS OPEN

US 97 Blewett Pass reopened Monday, Aug. 3, after being temporarily closing due to wildfire conditions.

Fire crews remain active in the area, so motorists may encounter fire equipment and emergency vehicles. No current delays, but conditions can change quickly. Please use caution and stay alert.

SR 291 STILL CLOSED

SR 291 remains closed in multiple locations due to the Spokane Complex Fire, including between Assembly Street and Seven Mile Road, and between Rutter Parkway near Little Spokane River and Suncrest. Swenson Road also remains closed at SR 291 in Suncrest. Please use safe alternate routes, yield to emergency vehicles and expect delays.

Hot, dry conditions continue across the state and stronger winds today and tomorrow could increase fire risk. Our crews are monitoring forecasts and conditions. Even on reopened highways, fire crews remain active and conditions can change quickly. Do not drive past closure points. They are in place to protect travelers, firefighters and emergency responders – and we don’t want them pulled away from active fire response. Prepare for poor air quality that can reduce visibility and be extra vigilant for wildlife on or near the road. Check road conditions before you travel and always follow emergency responder directions.

Weekend travel in the Puget Sound region: Here's what to expect Aug. 7–10

This is an extraordinarily difficult week for communities across Washington. We will continue sharing updates about road closures and reopening as part of WSDOT's role in the statewide response to the devastating wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington.

For travelers in the Puget Sound region, Fri., Aug. 7, through Mon., Aug. 10, will bring several major construction projects that will affect travel.

-NB I-405 and ramps will CLOSE from SR 900 to Coal Creek Parkway SE from 11:30p Fri. to 4a Mon. Crews will replace pavement and excavate drainage crossings.

-NE 85th St. and I-405 ramps will CLOSE in Kirkland between 6th St to 114th Ave NE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. Crews will pave and stripe the road. Closed ramps: NB & SB I-405 off-ramps to Exit 18 and NE 85th Street on-ramps to NB and SB I-405.

-EB SR 520 will CLOSE in Montlake area between I-5 and Montlake Blvd from 7p Sat. to 11a Sun. Crews will repair an expansion joint on the bridge. EB SR 520 across Lake Washington remains open. Only the section of EB SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Blvd will close.

-SR 202 in Fall City will close just east of the SR 202/203 roundabout from 5a Fri. to 9p Mon. Major storms in Dec. 2025 and Mar. 2026 eroded the Snoqualmie riverbank supporting the highway. Crews will rebuild and strengthen the riverbank to help protect the highway from future damage. Tubers, paddlers and boaters should expect temporary closures on portions of the Snoqualmie and Raging rivers and some nearby access points.

-Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge is ongoing. Express lanes continue to run NB 24/7.

Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day. The Mariners 50 Seasons Celebration, Seahawks Football Fest and Capitol Hill Block Party will bring extra traffic into and around Seattle. With EB SR 520 closing at 7 p.m., expect additional congestion on EB I-90. The Fred Hutch Obliteride for cancer research will also bring thousands of bicyclists to roads across the region. Drivers should use extra caution.

Allow extra travel time, follow signed detours and check our mobile app or real-time travel map before you go: wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

LOOKING AHEAD: Once this weekend's work wraps up, another overnight I-405 closure is scheduled. SB I-405 will close between SE 8th Street and I-90 from 11:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, to 4 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11 while crews continue replacing pavement and drainage crossings.

Also beginning Monday, Aug. 10, construction starts on the SR 14 West Camas Slough Bridge project in Clark County. With the Clark County Fair running Aug. 7–16, travelers should plan ahead for overnight SR 14 closures:

-WB SR 14: Aug. 11, 13 and 16–18, 8p–7a

-EB SR 14: Aug. 12, 14 and 17, 8p–7a

-Full closure: Aug. 19, 9p–6a

SR 291, US 97 Blewett Pass and SR 155 CLOSED due to wildfires

Our hearts are with the those who are affected by these devastating wildfires.

In support of incident commands managing the fires, several state highways are currently closed:

- SR 291 is CLOSED in both directions between Assembly Street (milepost 3) and Seven Mile Road (milepost 5.2) and also closed from Charles Road to Swensen due to the Spokane Complex Fire.

- US 97 Blewett Pass is closed in both directions from mileposts 150-178 due to the Liberty/Swauk Creek Fire.

- SR 155 is closed in both directions between Omak and Nespelem, mileposts 46-77, due to the Kaiser Canyon Fire.

WSDOT crews are staffing closure points and coordinating our efforts to support firefighters and emergency responders.

We ask you please do not drive around road closures. Conditions can change in minutes and entering a closed area can put you, our crews and emergency responders in danger.

Cross-state travel remains possible, but routes may change quickly. Check the WSDOT real-time travel map before and during your trip (see comment for link to map).

Your safety, the safety of our crews and those fighting these devastating fires is our top priority. Many of our own WSDOT employees live and work in these areas and are facing the same uncertainty, even as they continue helping support the response. Thank you for your support as crews continue their efforts.

Seafair weekend is cleared for takeoff! Here's your paint map travel briefing.

SEAFAIR WEEKEND IS CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF. We've hit pause on most major Seattle-area roadwork for Seafair weekend, but the skies won't be the only thing that's busy. Expect heavy weekend traffic, especially around Seafair events.

Here's your pre-departure briefing for getting around the greater Puget Sound:

The I-90 bridges will be open across Lake Washington. But here’s the deal… “open” does not mean that this is where we stop, stand, shimmy, or gander at the pretty blue angels in the sky. Now repeat it back to me “I will NOT stop along the I-90 Trail during the Seafair shows.”

Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge is still ongoing. The express lanes are northbound 24/7. Expect very heavy traffic, especially along I-5 in and out of Seattle. If you've got a game or concert on the itinerary, consider arriving by bike, bus or light rail. For details about Seafair activities including maps, parking and accessibility: www.seafair.org/seafair-weekend-festival/#accessibility

Heading from Tacoma toward Gig Harbor? Plan extra time Saturday, Aug. 1. From 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., two right lanes of the westbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the Jackson Avenue on-ramp to westbound SR 16 will close while crews perform emergency reinforcement of previous bridge joint repairs.

Travelers in the South Sound should also plan ahead. The Tribal Canoe Journey to Nisqually is expected to increase traffic Friday through Sunday around DuPont, JBLM and Nisqually.

Before you taxi out for the weekend, download our mobile app for real-time travel information so you can chart the best route to the ballpark, the waterfront or wherever your weekend takes you. Happy Seafair!
