I-90/SR 18 weekend closure update: revised plan due to rain

Spring weather is keeping construction crews on their toes yet again.

Rather than canceling this weekend’s planned I-90/SR 18 work because of the rainy forecast, crews are shifting work to a different ramp with a shifted closure time.

THE NEW PLAN

From noon Saturday, May 16 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 19:

  • The eastbound I-90 on-ramp from both directions of SR 18/Snoqualmie Parkway will close
  • The right lane of eastbound SR 18 south of SE 104th St will be closed
  • The right-turn lane from eastbound SR 18 to eastbound I-90 will be closed

During this closure, crews will grind pavement, do electrical work, pave all lanes of the ramp, and install guardrail and curbing and adjust stormwater drainage.

Crews plan to begin paving late Saturday or early Sunday after the rain clears, then continue through Sunday and Monday. If work finishes early, the ramp will reopen early.

DETOUR DETAILS

Because exit 22 (Preston/Fall City) tends to back up heavily during these closures, drivers should follow the signed detour:

WB I-90 → Exit 20 (High Point Way) → loop back to EB I-90

Residents on SE 104th St will still have access from all directions, but should expect construction vehicles moving through the area and possible delays near the ramp intersection.

LOOKING AHEAD

A few more major closures are still coming as the I-90/SR 18 diverging diamond project wraps up:

  • The westbound I-90 ramp closure originally planned for this weekend is now scheduled for May 29–June 1
  • One final extended “full closure” of SR 18 (only under I-90) is planned for June 4–8 for final paving work

Planned closures may be postponed and rescheduled with short notice if rain is in the forecast.

During the upcoming soccer tournament, no major closures will be allowed mid-June through mid-July.

We know these last few months of closures have been a bit of a grind. Crews are working to get the paving done while squeezing around those spring weather windows. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled. Schedule updates will be available on the project webpage, WSDOT’s Travel Center map and the WSDOT mobile app.

I-5 reduces to one lane in each direction near Alger for 12 days (May 10-May 22)

If you travel between Burlington and Bellingham on I-5, plan ahead for the next week and a half. Both directions of I-5 near Lake Samish Rd have been reduced to a single lane for 12 days until Friday, May 22, while crews install a new fish-passable structure beneath the northbound lanes.

To create enough room for crews to excavate beneath northbound I-5, northbound traffic will temporarily shift onto the southbound side of the freeway using a crossover road. Northbound and southbound traffic will be separated by concrete barriers.

Let's get into the details of what to expect during these lane reductions:

Through 2 p.m. Friday, May 22

  • Northbound and southbound I-5 each will be reduced to one lane near Lake Samish Road (exit 240)
  • Northbound traffic will temporarily shift onto the southbound side of the freeway through the work zone
  • Speed limits will be reduced to 60 mph in the area

Important note: The Lake Samish/Alger on-ramp to northbound I-5 closed May 3 and will remain closed for 28 days. A signed detour routes drivers to the Nulle Rd on-ramp at exit 242.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

Traffic will be funneled into a single lane in each direction through a long-term work zone, which means backups and slower travel times are likely throughout the corridor, especially during peak travel periods and weekends. Drivers should expect congestion to build quickly approaching the crossover area, with delays potentially extending well beyond the immediate work zone during busier times of day.

Travel between Burlington and Bellingham will likely be slower and less predictable throughout the closure. Commercial trucks may want to consider using SR 9, while passenger vehicles can use SR 9 or SR 11/Chuckanut Drive as alternate routes.

If possible, travel earlier or later, consider alternate routes and check real-time traffic conditions before heading out.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

This project will remove 12 fish barriers along tributaries to Friday Creek and reconnect approximately 4.2 miles of habitat for coho, steelhead, resident trout and sea-run cutthroat.

The work is part of WSDOT’s statewide fish passage program and ongoing efforts to comply with a federal court injunction requiring the state to correct culverts that block salmon and steelhead migration in western Washington.

Once this northbound work is complete, major daytime and long-term lane reductions will pause during the regional World Cup match period (June 12–July 8) before construction resumes later this summer on the southbound side of I-5.

HEADS UP: Expect major congestion across Puget Sound throughout May

If it feels like there’s construction everywhere this month, you’re not imagining it.

Beginning this weekend and continuing through May, travel around the greater Puget Sound region is going to be slower and more congested as crews work to make major progress on highway projects before Seattle’s summer of soccer arrives.

Let’s get into this weekend's closure details (May 8-11):

From Friday night, May 8, to Monday morning, May 11, crews will work on I-5, I-405, SR 520, and SR 99, creating longer, less predictable trips across the eastside and Seattle.

Eastside impacts:

  • SB I-405 will close between Coal Creek Parkway and SR 900/N. Southport Drive from 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 8 to 4 a.m. Monday, May 11
  • All ramps to and from NE 85th Street (Exit 18) will close from 11 p.m. Friday, May 8 to 4 a.m. Monday, May 11. Both directions of Northeast 85th Street will also be fully closed from 114th Avenue Northeast to 120th Avenue Northeast with signed detours in place

And starting Monday, May 11, Kirkland drivers will wake up to two new roundabouts on Northeast 85th Street. Over the weekend crews will shift traffic to a new roundabout on the freshly excavated Northeast 85th Street level. The 114th Avenue Northeast intersection will also be reconfigured into a roundabout using a temporary setup with signs and barrels. Pedestrians will begin to use level two of the interchange, where Northeast 85th traffic was previously traveling while crews dug level one.

Construction at the 114th Avenue Northeast roundabout will continue over the next five months. Pay attention as you travel through this area. More information is available on the WSDOT website about how to navigate roundabouts. Reminders are also available on our blog

Seattle impacts:

  • The SR 99 tunnel will be fully closed in both directions for maintenance from 10 p.m. Friday, May 8 to 6 a.m. Saturday, May 9
  • EB SR 520 and all associated on-and off-ramps between I-5 and Montlake Blvd. will close for construction from 11 p.m. Friday, May 8 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 11. The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to EB SR 520 will also close
  • NB First Avenue Bridge South will fully close from 9 p.m. Friday, May 8 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 11

Map of major Puget Sound highway closures and restrictions happening May 8–11.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

When several major corridors are limited at the same time, congestion can extend well beyond the construction areas as drivers find alternate routes.

Travelers are likely to encounter congestion in areas they typically do not associate with freeway construction, including local roads and parallel routes.

Plan for miles-long backups on I-405 in both directions approaching Bellevue and Renton and heavier congestion throughout the I-405 corridor. Travelers in Kirkland should expect heavy congestion on city streets.

Expect constrained travel in Seattle, where two northbound lanes of I-5 remain closed across the Ship Canal Bridge.

So, if you can - leave earlier, travel later, take transit, find alternate routes, plan ahead, give yourself plenty of time and most importantly use tools like our real time travel center to know before you go.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS:

With the exception of Memorial Day weekend, we’ll have major work happening concurrently across multiple highways including I-5, I-405, SR 99, and SR 520. Normally, a lot of this work would continue straight into June and July. But this year is different. With Seattle hosting the men’s soccer tournament many projects will scale back or pause altogether to avoid major traffic impacts so we can keep people and goods moving through the region during the event.

That makes May a really important window to get as much work done as possible before those restrictions begin. And one more thing... we have a full closure of NB I-5 June 5-8 so we can pick up the Revive I-5 workzone. When NB I-5 reopens, all lanes including the Express Lanes will return to normal operations for the duration of the summer of soccer, before we return to our regularly scheduled summer of construction.

We’re back with another weekend closure at the I-90/SR 18 interchange, this time on the westbound side. In addition to the SR 18 closure, the westbound I-90 off-ramp to SR 18 and Snoqualmie Parkway will also be closed, so plan ahead if you’re traveling through the area.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

  • Starting at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 30^(th) westbound SR 18 will fully close between Issaquah-Hobart Rd and I-90
  • By 5 a.m. Monday, May 4^(th) at least one lane is expected to reopen but expect additional work to continue in a single lane as crews reinstall guardrail, curbing and stormwater drains
  • The WB I-90 off-ramp to SR 18 and Snoqualmie Parkway will be closed

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

Seattle-area travelers should prepare for a busy weekend on the roads.

This westbound SR 18 and WB I-90 off-ramp closures will continue to impact travel near the I-90/SR 18 interchange. Expect congestion in the area and delays along nearby routes.

Passenger vehicles should use alternate routes and plan for added travel time. To reach Snoqualmie Parkway or the SE 104th St area, follow the signed detour: continue westbound on I-90 to the High Point Way exit, then return to eastbound I-90 and exit at SR 18/Snoqualmie Parkway.

Issaquah-Hobart Road and city streets in Issaquah are NOT suitable for freight. During the eastbound SR 18 closures, freight traffic should use alternate routes or follow the signed detour on westbound SR 169 to northbound I-405, then take eastbound SR 900 to eastbound I-90.

This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled. Schedule updates will be available on the project webpage, WSDOT’s Travel Center map and the WSDOT mobile app.

We’ve got a project kicking off soon along SR 203 in Carnation and Fall City, and it’ll mean some daily lane closures in the area.

Crews will be installing vegetation along the roadway. Alright, I know what you're thinking, "when did WSDOT get into gardening?" Well, it turns out plants are pretty good at filtering water that runs off the roadways. The vegetation we add will treat runoff before it reaches nearby wetlands and sensitive areas.

Starting with a bit of setup work April 27, you’ll see crews out along SR 203. Expect single-lane closures with flaggers alternating traffic through each work zone:

  • Just north of Fall City near SE 3rd St (MP 1)
  • Near NE 77th St north of Carnation (MP 8)

Closures will happen Monday–Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the project is expected to wrap up by summer 2026. Crews don't have any scheduled work the week of May 4-8.

We’re in the final stretch of improvements at the I-90/SR 18 interchange, and that means a few extended weekend closures of SR 18 for final paving and striping work. Expect a mix of lane reductions, directional closures and one full closure under I-90 over the next few months, as the weather allows.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

  • Starting at 9 p.m. Thursday, April 23^(rd) eastbound SR 18 will fully close between Issaquah-Hobart Rd and I-90
  • By 5 a.m. Monday, April 27^(th) at least one lane is expected to reopen but expect additional work to continue in the right lane as crews reinstall guardrail, curbing and stormwater drains

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

Seattle-area travelers should prepare for a busy weekend on the roads. This eastbound SR 18 closure will take place at the same time as a weekend southbound I-405 closure in Renton.

That combination, along with ongoing I-5 lane reductions in Seattle, will likely lead to significant congestion, including in areas you may not typically associate with freeway construction such as local roads and parallel routes.

Passenger vehicles should use alternate routes and plan for added travel time.
