Chaotic and very Patriotic. The 4th of July weekend paint map is here!

Chaotic and very Patriotic. The 4th of July weekend paint map is here!

All this traffic makes me want a hotdog REAL BAD. Happy 250th Birthday, America! While most of our work is on pause for the holiday weekend, you can still expect HEAVY patriotic traffic on the roads. There are way too many local 4th of July celebrations to include on this map, but many will include road and ramp closures. A few things to know before you fire up the grill:

- It’s fire season! The best birthday gift you can give America is not setting it on fire. Follow city/county firework laws, make sure your tow chains aren’t dragging, and don’t park in tall, dry grass.

- Planning a ferry ride for the holiday weekend? So are nearly 400,000 other people over the next 4 days. The busiest sailings and longest wait times will likely be westbound (island-bound) Thursday-Friday and eastbound (mainland-bound) Saturday & Sunday. Visit our website for more info.

- All four lanes of I-90 across the Vantage Bridge will be open. But the usual holiday increase in traffic means travelers should expect delays, especially eastbound Friday and westbound Sunday.

- Going downtown for Seattle fireworks? In partnership with the city of Seattle, we are closing the Mercer Street off-ramp to I-5, along with the Boylston Ave/Roanoke Street and Lakeview Blvd exits around 10 p.m on Saturday. Plan ahead, because this could change.

- Take transit to the cookout! Check with your local public transit agencies for any holiday schedule or service changes. Amtrak Cascades passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets early and plan to arrive at the station one hour before departure.

- Expect heavier traffic as people head out on Thursday and Friday and come back on Sunday & Monday. The best way to avoid surprises? Check our app, website, and holiday weekend travel charts before you leave to find the best (and worst) times to travel on I-5, US 2, I-90 and at the border. Travel charts here 👉 https://wsdot.wa.gov/.../4th-of-july-weekend-travel-times

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend. May your glizzies be grilled, your fireworks stay in the sky, and your trips go according to plan.

Fourth of July weekend travel charts are here! Know when to hit the road (and when to not)

We've released our Fourth of July holiday weekend travel charts for all the Type A folks trying to make a plan for this weekend!

See the best (and worst) times to hit the road on four routes that tend to see the most congestion during holiday weekends:

Our charts span from Thursday, July 2, to Monday, July 6. Here's an example to whet the palate:

Appetizing, no?

How to read the charts

The colors

WSDOT traffic analysts looked at how many cars were on the road past 4th of July weekends. Based on this historical data, the graphs show how many cars (vertical axis) we project to be on the road each hour (horizontal axis) for 4th of July weekend 2026. As the graphs turn from green to yellow, drivers can expect some congestion. During the red hours, traffic analysts predict travel will reach roadway capacity. Once a roadway reaches capacity, any small incident can cause significant backups.

The black line

The black line running from left to right shows typical traffic. This gives drivers more information on how the 4th of July 2026 holiday weekend travel may relate to a typical weekend.

Do you travel Guide Meridian (SR 536) or Badger Road (SR 546)? We'd like your input!

If you regularly drive, bike, walk, roll or catch transit along Guide Meridian (SR 539) or Badger Road (SR 546), we'd like to hear from you.

We're in the early planning stages for paving projects scheduled for 2028, and because these projects include Complete Streets requirements, we're looking for feedback on how people use these corridors today and where there may be opportunities to improve things for everyone who travels through the area.

Visual of where repaving would occur on SR 539 and SR 546

The projects include:

  • Repaving about 2 miles of SR 539 between Bay Lyn Drive and the SR 546 interchange.
  • Repaving nearly 2.5 miles of SR 546 between Vinup Road and the SR 539 interchange (excluding recently completed fish passage areas).

The online questionnaire is open through Wednesday, July 1 and is available in both English and Spanish. You can answer a few questions about your travel habits and leave comments about the corridor.

Whether you commute through the area every day or only travel it occasionally, your feedback helps us better understand how these roads are used before design work moves forward.

When: Now through Wednesday, July 1

Where: Online

Details: Content is available in English and Spanish

Free, temporary internet access may be available to those who do not have broadband services. Washington state's open data portal has created a map of public libraries offering drive up Wi-Fi, including locations, hours and contact information.

Heads up, Bothell: I-405 traffic shift near Canyon Park brings a temporary 55 mph work zone

If you drive through Canyon Park, it's time to ease up a little on the gas pedal.

Overnight June 27-29, crews will close lanes and ramps on I-405 near SR 527/Canyon Park Parkway in Bothell while they shift both northbound and southbound traffic toward the shoulders. This traffic shift will create a work zone for the next phase of the I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project.

Once all northbound lanes reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 28, you'll notice an advisory speed of 55 mph through approximately one mile of the northbound work zone near Canyon Park.

That advisory speed will remain in place while crews build the North Fork Perry Creek fish passage and the inline Stride bus rapid transit station. The traffic shift is expected to be in place for at least the next 12 months.

If you're traveling through the area this weekend, plan for overnight delays, follow signed detours, and slow down through the work zone. Slower speeds help keep everyone safe while construction is underway.

An aerial of the section of I-405 that will have the speed reduction and an example of the advisory speed signage.

We're back with another MAPsterpiece! The June 26-29 paint map is here and she's packed with PRIDE

I present to you: this week’s MAPsterpiece.

From Pride to PLUR. Pirates to parades. Hoopfest to honky-tonk. There’s something happening in just about every corner of the state this weekend.

With Seattle Pride taking center stage, expect heavier traffic in and around downtown Seattle, especially on Sunday during the parade. Whether you’re headed to celebrate, dance at the Gorge, see pirates storm the shores of Alki, shoot hoops in Spokane or simply trying to get from Point A to Point B, here’s what you should know before you hit the road.

- Sedgwick Rd/SR 160 in Kitsap County remains CLOSED between Blackberry Hill Ln SE and Long Lake Rd SE through the end of October while crews build a new bridge over Salmonberry Creek. Drivers should continue using the detour via Jackson Ave SE, SE Salmonberry Rd and Long Lake Rd SE. Bicycle and pedestrians should continue using Phillips Rd SE, SE Salmonberry Rd, Long Lake Rd SE and Lakeview Dr SE.

- The ramp from SB I-5 to SB I-205 in Vancouver will be CLOSED from 10 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Sunday while crews complete paving work. Travelers will need to use an alternate route to access southbound I-205.

- The right lane of northbound I-5 near Napavine will be CLOSED from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday night for paving work near the Koontz Road overpass (between MP 69 and 70).

No matter where the weekend takes you, plan ahead before you leave. Check our app or real-time travel map, consider riding Amtrak Cascaded or transit when it works for your trip, and give yourself a little extra time!

And finally, because we couldn’t let this week pass without getting a little sentimental...

Believe it or not, this week marks 10 years since the birth of our very first paint map. They grow up so fast. Swipe to see the baby!

Transit? Walking? Driving? Future US 2 Trestle options are up for review and we want to hear from you!

WSDOT is asking for public feedback as we evaluate potential improvements to the US 2 Trestle corridor.

As part of an ongoing Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study, we're reviewing different alternatives for both ends of the trestle, including connections to I-5 and Everett on the west side and SR 204, US 2 and Lake Stevens on the east side.

The study will help identify which alternatives should move forward for more detailed evaluation and will also consider environmental impacts and potential mitigation measures.

Beginning Tuesday, June 16, people can visit an online open house to learn about the screening of potential alternatives. The PEL study will identify a reasonable range of alternatives to evaluate in more detail in accordance with federal laws.

When: Tuesday, June 16, until Tuesday, July 7

Where: Online

Details: Content is available in English, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Visitors can also leave comments.

Your feedback will help refine the proposed alternatives before a draft report is released for public review later this year.

US 2 Trestle Location

Free WiFi access is available at these Snohomish County libraries locations for people who wish to participate in the online open house:

  • Everett Public Library – 2702 Hoyt Ave.
  • Library on Wheels – 7312 35th Ave. NE, Marysville
  • Marysville Library – 6120 Grove St.

We heard the chants "M-A-P, D-A-D, U-S-A!" and we answered. Here's the Father's Day weekend paint map

Do you hear that? The chanting? M-A-P, M-A-P! D-A-D, D-A-D! U-S-A, U-S-A! Lots of cheering and a lot going on this weekend.

It’s Father’s Day weekend, which means several of this map’s residents have arrived with their offspring (peep the baby rhubarb and the baby bridge troll). Meanwhile, the World Cup is in full swing and Team USA is in Seattle this weekend, which explains the eagle, soccer ball and suspicious lack of orange on this week’s map.

While many of our major projects take a brief halftime during World Cup, we still have a few closures and openings you should know about.

Here’s what we’ve got going on:

- Sedgwick Rd/SR 160 in Kitsap County is CLOSED between Blackberry Hill Ln SE and Long Lake Rd SE through the end of October. This extended closure will allow crews to build a new bridge over Salmonberry Creek. Vehicles will use Jackson Ave SE, SE Salmonberry Rd and Long Lake Rd SE. Bicycles and pedestrians will take slightly different routes using Phillips Rd SE, SE Salmonberry Rd, Long Lake Rd SE and Lakeview Dr SE.

- SR 20 North Cascades Highway is OPEN! Crews completed repairs to washout and rockslide damage and reopened the scenic route three weeks ahead of schedule. Travelers should still watch for construction equipment leaving the area and wildlife adjusting to the return of highway traffic.

Whether you’re heading to a celebration, a dad’s day gathering, a World Cup match, a festival or simply leaving the house, check your route before you go and give yourself extra travel time.

Traveling from out of state for the World Cup? For a full list of resources during the matches happening from now through July 6, visit our website: https://engage.wsdot.wa.gov/seattle-world-championship...

Happy Father’s Day, happy Juneteenth, happy Solstice, happy World Cup and happy route planning!

Happy Father’s Day, happy Juneteenth, happy Solstice, happy World Cup and happy route planning!

Walter vs. Flat Tire: An unexpected I-90 matchup

Walter can handle pressure… his tire couldn’t.

Back in May, Mick Hedquist of our Incident Response Team stopped to check on a car with a flat tire on the shoulder of westbound I-90.

As Mick walked back to his truck, he thought he recognized the driver from somewhere. Then the driver stood up… and my-oh-my did it dawn on him.

This was his daughter’s favorite Mariner. This was Logan Gilbert, better known on game days as his ultra-competitive alter ego, Walter.

Roadside assistance was already on scene, but Mick stayed nearby to provide an extra layer of traffic safety while the tire was changed and to ensure everyone could get back on the road safely.

Knowing Gilbert is his daughter’s favorite player, Mick asked if he’d be willing to give an autograph and take a quick photo. The signed keepsake now hangs proudly in a frame at home.

Our Incident Response Team helps everyone on Washington’s highways, whether you’re driving home or taking the mound for Mariners that night. Our IRT responders are there to provide assistance, improve safety, and keep traffic moving.

And if you see IRT, emergency responders, tow trucks or roadside assistance vehicles stopped on the shoulder, remember to move over or slow down. Giving people room to work safely is one of the simplest ways you can help prevent serious crashes and injuries.

Thanks to Mick for sharing the story and to all of our IRT responders who are out there helping travelers every day. And good luck to Logan and the rest of the M’s tonight against the Orioles! We hope the road to victory is free of flat tires. But if not, we know a guy.

A highly accurate map of Washington for our visitors

It's heeeeeeere. A few reminders for the next few weeks:

  • With games in Seattle and Vancouver AND nine fan zones cross the state, expect heavy congestion on major north-south AND east-west routes.
  • Expect longer border crossing times.
  • Transit is your friend. We have a landing page that serves as a one-stop shop that links to our real-time travel map, our app, border wait times, and all of our regional transportation partners. Get familiar with it! https://engage.wsdot.wa.gov/seattle-world-championship-soccer
  • Most major construction is paused until July 6 but expect some overnight lane and ramp closures on non-match days.

And we literally couldn't find a place for it on the map, but in case it needs to be said: Go Dawgs, too. We love you, UW.
