Australia’s social media ban preventing teenagers from accessing the news, research finds

A new study from Western Sydney University, Queensland University of Technology, and the University of Canberra has found that while most teenagers have not been significantly affected by the social media ban, just over half of those who have are now seeing less news than they were before the ban. Around a third of teenagers who describe themselves as moderately affected are seeing less news, and around a fifth of those who describe themselves as unaffected.

Before the ban, a little under forty percent of those surveyed described social media as the main way they got their news. This correlated with age: a bit over seventy percent of those aged sixteen and seventeen used it for news, while only 37% of those aged 10-12 did.
