Boliden’s Laver copper concession survives appeals
Sweden rejected two appeals against the concession, allowing Boliden to proceed toward an environmental permit. The project could double Swedish copper production. Why it matters: Laver could add about 10% to European copper self-sufficiency and support approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Where is the copper supposed to come from if we say no to mining in Sweden and Europe as a whole?
I’m trying to understand why Miljögruppen Pite Älvdal and Älvsbyns Naturskyddsförening are appealing the Laver mine decision.
I understand the desire to protect nature. Mining has a major environmental impact and should be scrutinised carefully. But copper is essential for power grids, hospitals, computers, phones, data centres, industry and electrification.
If we don’t mine these raw materials in Sweden or the EU, the demand doesn’t disappear. We simply import them, often from countries with weaker environmental standards and greater geopolitical risk.
Europe has already learned what dependence on Russian energy can cost. Do we really want to create the same kind of dependency for strategic metals?
I’m not saying Laver should automatically go ahead. But I genuinely want to understand the alternative.
If Sweden and Europe need more copper, but we don’t want to mine it here, where exactly should it come from?

Plug Power writes off planned EUR400 million Antwerp hydrogen plant
Plug Power fully impaired the proposed green-hydrogen project in Antwerp port, where it had planned to invest up to EUR400 million, after judging its economics too uncertain. Why it matters: The cancellation exposes the commercial gap facing large European green-hydrogen projects and removes planned clean-fuel capacity from a strategic industrial port.
