Why do people seem to hate Venus?

It's been 2 years, 7 months and a week since season 4 ended and Venus officially won, but this past year especially it seems that people have...soured on her? Why?

TL;DR I love season 4 and I liked Venus on it. Is it something she did beyond the show that make people irked by her? I wanna know, but please let's be civil and not rancid. You can dislike someone and not antagonize them and I don't want this post to be locked up. I'm just trying to learn.

Full disclosure, I haven't kept up with her socials or personal life. Aside from everything shown on her season, the most I know is that she changed her mug and she's wearing body/has given up on the androgynous bent entirely.

While I was prepared to dislike her in Episode 1 for just having the fashion/look queen stereotype vibe, she won me over as the season got going. She seemed determined to push herself comedically (such as in the Rusical and a bit in the infomercial, for what that challenge was worth), her lip syncs to "Invited" and "Pull Up" were completely raw and while her non-tucking "brand" was a bit whatever, I think she was incredibly inventive and creative with her looks. Even when they amounted to just showing body, most of them had a little detail that just elevated them a bit. I had to give props on her red fur runway (although I did get schadenfreude when her leg fur slid down during the lip-sync 🤭), her finale gown, mug and hair were so gorgeous they gave me body dysmorphia and my favorite look of her's is her bridesmaids flower gown with the petals for hair! She also had my respect in Untucked when combatting with Melinda (whomst I ADORE). While most queens of her calibre and age would become shrinking violets during a crash out like this, I commended Venus for shouting back and trying to keep the peace without being a pushover (I think of "Woah...woah....WOAH!😡" all the time).

I hope I don't sound too glazing, but I'm saying that she had a narrative that justified her win ultimately. I wasn't fully satisfied with out top 4; They were all strong, but they all had glaring issues that held me back from rooting for any of them to fully win, but out of all of them Venus seemed to have the clearest storyline. She'd never been in the bottom but she also wasn't coasting. She was super present and consistently produced good work even beyond her look-queen sensibilities and on top of that she had a point to represent her indigenous heritage. I'm not saying that representation automatically deserves brownie points, but there seemed to be substance to her is all. Maybe not the most astonishing winner in Drag Race ever but she wasn't a roach. She did very good.

But that's on the show and that's behind the edit. Has she done something off of the show that I didn't hear about? Did she say something? Do her out-of-drag thirst traps on Insta annoy people? Did they just hate her step-down look? (fair) It just blindsided me how dismissive people seem of her as a winner when at least in the edit of the show her win seems justified.

Again, be civil. I'm genuinely trying to just learn.

How do I keep my makeup from rubbing off my clothes after a performance?

Full disclosure: I'm a sweaty queen. It seems whenever I perform, my collar is stained with my makeup and I'm about tired of it.

Is there a way to seal my makeup better? Should I stop using the setting sprays pictured above? Or is the problem with the type of makeup I'm using?

Any reccs or advice are appreciated. I'm just on a tight budget (but please just be nice. I'm just an amateur trying to teach myself how to do drag).

Books about gay life before the AIDS crisis and after Stonewall?

I'm looking for books that have

  • First or second-hand accounts of the day-to-day goings on of gay men (or queer people) in the United States at this time
  • Accounts of gay club/bar life in this era
  • Especially accounts of queer people who didn't live in major cities (i.e. LA or New York)
  • Accounts of the lives of college-age queer people/gay men at this time

I'm also open to fictional stuff that has these qualities and are generally rooted in reality

Question for older gays: How was the gay clubbing experience in the 1970s?

I hear a lot about the decline of the gay bar today and it makes me curious what they used to be like? How did people at these clubs have to navigate discretion in this era?

Where were they concentrated? What was the vibe? Was there a major difference between bars in the beginning of the decade vs the end? Were these clubs mostly for sex, for dancing, some mix of both or neither?

How did The Most Popular Girls in School get away with using such recognizable dolls?

I know that some dolls were knockoffs from the Dollar tree but many were recognizable as Disney princess dolls and involved very minimal customizing. And as far as I know they didn't get a cease-and-desist for copyright infringement or anything.

If anyone has any insight, please let me know.

What is a very esoteric/highly specific Drag Race thing that it seems only you care about [picture somewhat unrelated, other than I like this face]

What is this online flat art style called and is it still used that much?

I remember when this seemed to be everywhere, to the point that it just feels expected. But I'm curious if other people see it that much nowadays [reuploaded due to a spelling mistake]

If you saw the name "Sol", how would you pronounce it?

Would you pronounce it "sawl" with the "ah" sound

or "soul" like "soleil", sun in Spanish of "sole".

I love queens repeating outfits SO much. Drag is expensive, so wear an outfit twice!

What are some of your repeated outfits? Either repeated on Drag Race or repeated from social media (like, I've seen Crystal's hand dress on social media before and I think it's fabulous that it made it to air).

Do they have trade schools for fashion design?

I'm in school currently, but my school doesn't have a fashion design program. I also am not sure what aspect of the fashion industry I want to join. Lastly, my sewing skills are less than amateur. I have a good idea of the kinds of silhouettes I like, but not necessarily how to make them. Building my skillset seems like a good instinct but I'm not sure if programs that focus solely on sewing and design as a trade exist.

If anyone has any insight or recommendations on what course of action to take, let me know, please.
