On this day 25 years ago, DreamWorks' "Shrek" was released in cinemas in the United States.

Based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book of the same name, the film was directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, produced by Aron Warner, John H. Williams and Jeffrey Katzenberg, written by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman and Roger S. H. Schulman, and featured the voice talents of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad.

Promotional tie-ins included a soundtrack CD from DreamWorks Records, a music score album CD from Varèse Sarabande, TDK Mediactive’s Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown video game for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, a Burger King kids’ meal promotion which consisted of nine “Candy Caddies,” and Baskin-Robbins’ special ice cream flavor titled “Shrek’d-Out Chocolate Mint,” which featured a combination of white mint mousse ice cream and five different Shrek character chocolate pieces filled with green-mint goo. The film grossed $493 million worldwide against a $60 million budget and won numerous accolades, including the 2001 BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, which honored animated feature films released in 2001. The Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2020.

General Mills Shrek cereal, 2004

The cereal, a combination of sweetened corn puffs and marshmallows, was released in 2004 to promote the theatrical release of Shrek 2. A print advertisement for the cereal was part of a coupon booklet that came with the original DVD release of the film; General Mills promoted the film's home video release by putting Shrek T-shirt iron-ons on boxes of their most popular cereals, such as Cocoa Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios, and Trix.
