Are 18 credit hrs of recent As enough to make up for a bad undergraduate GPA?
I'm applying to a fairly selective applied social sciences master's program at a prestigious school in the US. When I did my original 3 year undergrad degree 10 years ago, my grades were abysmal. My target school only looks at upper division coursework, in which my GPA was around 2.
The GPA cutoff for this program is normally 3.0 but if your department wants to admit you, they can make exceptions.
I'm about to finish upgrading to a 4 year bachelor's, for which I took 18 credit hours. (My classes end next week.) I expect my GPA just in these recent 18 hours to be 3.8. Because of the number of failed classes I had in my 3 year degree, this will at best bump my upper division GPA to 2.5, so I'll still have to ask for a GPA exception.
Are 18 credit hours enough recent evidence of improvement to be compelling? I'm considering taking some extra post bac coursework this semester to try to gather more As. Not sure if it's worth my time and money.
I have two professors and two former managers as recommenders, and my GRE is 170 v / 161 q.
