Gastroparesis vs malabsorption

For context, I have been diagnosed with questionable gastroparesis based on an endoscopy (stomach was still full of food even when fasting appropriately) and an inconclusive emptying study (I could only get about 6 bites of the meal down without vomiting but they did the test anyway). I have a long history of iron and vitamin deficiencies that do not seem to correct themselves with treatment, but recently, last week I ended up in the hospital almost needing a blood transfusion my iron/Ferritin/vitD/vit b12 were so critically lol. I am getting my third iron infusion in 6 years next week. My doctors are obviously treating my deficiencies, but have referred me back to my gastero to investigate possible malabsorption or leaky gut as a cause. What is the difference between gastroparesis(possibly intermittent) and full fledged "malabsorption" in terms of treatment options or diagnostics?

Can iron/B12/vitamin D/folic deficiency cause sudden episodes of burning, paper-thin cracking skin?

I’ve had chronic iron deficiency anemia requiring iron infusions, along with long-term low folic, vitamin D, and B12. One symptom I can’t figure out is my skin.

I get episodes where my skin suddenly changes texture almost overnight. It becomes extremely dry, thin, fragile, and burns/stings. It cracks easily and almost feels like “paper skin” or like the moisture completely disappeared from it instantly. The texture is noticeably different during these flares and it hurts very easily.

I also have strange hair changes where some white hairs grow in thick/coarse and seem banded in color.

Has anyone experienced this from nutrient deficiencies alone, or did it turn out to be something else like malabsorption, autoimmune disease, thyroid issues, eczema, etc.?

For context:

chronic iron deficiency despite treatment

history of iron infusions

persistent low vitamin D despite working outside

low B12

elevated platelets during deficiency episodes

elevated D-dimer previously with negative imaging

I’m trying to understand whether deficiencies alone can really cause this level of skin change or if I should be pushing for more testing

Chronic vit D Deficiency despite treatment and more than enough sun

I’ve had low vitamin D for years despite taking the prescribed 50,000 IU supplements multiple times and I work outside all day almost every day. My recent Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy level was only 20.1 ng/mL, which is still considered insufficient. My ferritin is also very low at 9.

I also deal with iron deficiency anemia and B12 deficiency issues. Has anyone else had vitamin D stay low no matter how much sun or supplements you get? Did you ever find out what was causing it?

Severe iron deficiency anemia with ferritin 8-9, platelets near 500, elevated D-dimer but negative CTA — anyone else experienced this?

Hi everyone. I’m trying to understand what could be causing all of this and whether anyone has gone through something similar.

I’ve had severe iron deficiency anemia for years and have already needed 2 iron infusions in the past 3 years, but I’m still becoming symptomatic and my labs remain abnormal.

Symptoms:

collapsing/fainting

tachycardia (heart rate hit 128)

dizziness/lightheadedness

shortness of breath

exhaustion/weakness

headaches/concussion/head hematoma after passing out

Recent labs:

Hemoglobin: 10.2–10.9

Hematocrit: 33.2

Ferritin: 8–9

Iron: 12

Iron saturation: 2%

TIBC: 564

MCV: 73–77

MCH/MCHC low

RDW: 17

Platelets: 492

D-dimer: 268 (slightly elevated)

Vitamin D: 20.1

Chronic B12 deficiency for years as well

Because of the elevated D-dimer and symptoms, they evaluated me for a pulmonary embolism. I had a CT angiography that was negative, which was reassuring, but I’m still worried because my uncle died from a pulmonary embolism.

I’ve read that severe iron deficiency can sometimes cause reactive thrombocytosis (high platelets), but can it also mildly elevate D-dimer? Has anyone else had:

platelets this high from iron deficiency?

elevated D-dimer with negative scans?

repeated iron infusions but continued deficiency?

could there be an absorption issues?

I know nobody can diagnose me online, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with similar experiences.

should I push for hematology follow-up?

Not medical advice...Just support

I’m honestly getting scared and looking for advice/experiences from people who have dealt with severe iron deficiency anemia.

Over the last 3 years I’ve had TWO iron infusions already, and my labs are still awful. My ferritin is 8-9, iron saturation is 2%, iron is 12, and my hemoglobin is now 10.9 with low MCV/MCH. I’m also apparently vitamin D deficient.

What worries me most is the symptoms. I’m not just tired — I’m literally collapsing/passing out. I recently fell hard enough that I ended up with stitches, a head hematoma, and a concussion. I feel weak, dizzy, shaky, short of breath, and exhausted constantly.

My question is: at what point do doctors consider a blood transfusion instead of just more iron infusions? Has anyone had numbers/symptoms like this and ended up needing one even if hemoglobin wasn’t critically low?

Also…how am I vitamin D deficient when I work outside almost every day? I’m in the sun constantly. Could anemia or absorption issues somehow be connected to that too?

I’m following up with doctors, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar because this is starting to affect my ability to function normally.

Today was one of those days that reminds me why rescue is both the most beautiful and the most heartbreaking thing I’ll ever do.

Four of my five tiny babies went to their forever homes today. Just like that… the house feels quieter, a little emptier, and my heart feels so full and so heavy all at once.

These baby books are something I made for each of them... a little piece of their story, a reminder that their lives mattered from the very beginning. Every late night, every bottle, every tiny milestone… every ounce of love poured into them is inside those pages.

I’m so proud of the lives they’re going to have. Safe. Loved. Chosen. Exactly what they deserved from the start. But it doesn’t make letting go any easier.

There’s still one little soul left with me tonight, and I’m holding onto every moment a little tighter.

This is the part of rescue people don’t always see...the goodbye. The quiet after. The missing pieces.

But I would choose this kind of heartbreak every single time if it means they get their happy ending. 🤍

Go be everything you were meant to be, my sweet babies. I’ll love you forever.

Everyone, meet Sampson (the head emotional support kitty for new welcomes), Deliaha, Midnight, and Sampson. Midnight was our worst case...refused to come out of a bathroom window for a year! Once we got him to trust us, we were able to get his teeth fixed and integrate him with the others! Sampson is now his security blanket and best friend 🐈‍⬛️🖤

Hello, I own and run a rescue where we currently have 16 cats. 5 weeks ago a feral showed up begging for help as she was about to give birth. Long story short, we have been keeping momma and babies completely isolated in a spacious bathroom, but the reality is that once the babies are gone(we have homes for all 5!), we are going to have to introduce her to the main cat house where all at this point are FIV positive. I am dedicated to working with her to trust humans, but her instincts are still there. It's a heart breaking decision. Any advice. Momma and babies for tax!
