Storing cast iron stuff or other van-specific tips?

Over the winter I was living with my ex and started getting into using cast iron stuff again. Right now they've been living at my family's house.

When I bring them into the van for the first time I'm curious about storing them... does the oil from seasoning leach into wood? Is there a liner you use under them? I'm probably over thinking about how to store them.

I do the vinegar/water spray for my dishes but think that's probably not the right way to go here. I guess largely it'll still be the same as in a house with just water, dry, oil, cool, store...

Was there anything you found especially helpful while using cast iron in a van?

'Stuck in a loop' & 'skewed time' movies?

I've been really into these movies where characters are stuck in a loop or a setting, or there's a weird time skew of some sort. Triangle (2009) is one I see mentioned a lot here. Time Trap (2017) has more of the time shift aspect I'm talking about. I'm looking for stuff in the horror realm but if it isn't exactly, whatever. Dark City (1998) is a great combo of a mild version, loosest sense of both.

Some of the ones I've seen lately, whether I liked them or not were:

6:45 - started alright and was almost entirely all downhill. promising concept but failed poorly

Mine Games - alright iirc, saw it a while ago

Walk Away - literally just finished it and it was way better than I expected. Surprised I haven't heard of it until Tubi recommended it.

Dead Dicks - next on my list, listed as horror/comedy

Time Lapse - not exactly either of what I mentioned but has a weird time aspect to it.

Driveback - maybe a little bit of both.. was also way better than I expected

Eta: Two Distant Strangers - Netflix short (32mins). really good.

Electrolyte powders vs liquids

TL;DR - if electrolyte powders upset your stomach, have you found one that doesn't?

Whatever my body does, it runs through salts like there's no tomorrow, so simple gatorade powder isn't great since there's so much sugar compared to others. I'm active and in good health but some days I need the boost because diet and snacks aren't cutting it.

So I know pedialyte is like THE standard for an electrolyte replenishment, and there are various store brands. But the powder packets just make so much more sense in terms of money, storage volume, waste, everything.

The problem is the powders almost always turn my stomach a bit (or a lot), or they just straight up run through me in a bad way. The premixed fluids never bother me though.

Liquid I.V. was the worst for me, and Up&Up ORS from Target seems to be the best (some flavors more than others) but i still have to drink it with food. Mostly I've tried the various store brands...

I've seen Nuun mentioned a lot in my reading, but most of these are in terms of flavor and cost, etc. What's keeping me from *just trying* the pricier ones is exactly that - it's an expensive trial and error.

Anyway... i know everyone's body is different but hoping tonget any insight from others. TIA!

Does anyone else think the Amazon Pharmacy ads on reddit are/should be a horror movie?

I mean.. that fucking mannequin is creepy as shit as certainly doesn't make me want to want to buy medicine from them. Every time I see it I think there's a possession or haunting and my sister's dolls have come to life...

But I just hate them. HATE these ads.

Anyone else?

Eta: here's a short version I was able to find. The one I see on reddit is longer and weirder.

Finding horror in unlikely places? The Last Descent (2016)

Question first: what films from other genres scared the shit out of you?

The Descent (2005) gets a lot of talk here, rightfully so, and the caves setting seem to be a big part of it. I've never seen The Last Descent (2016) mentioned in this sub and the search feature brings nothing. I don't want to write up any spoilers, so I'll leave it at it's about the real-life events of caver John Jones. It's certainly not a horror film but it scares the shit out of me regardless.

Does Kindly, GA exist?

Edit: I believe commenters were right with it being Conley, GA

Like 20-something years ago I got stranded outside Atlanta and stayed in what felt like a really sketchy neighborhood I remember as Kindly (sp?). It wasn't in the city but wasn't really a suburb... there was an Asian-owned convenience store and the lady was amazed to see a white dude in there, and then just some commercial fast foods and gas stations.. we stayed in a motel that in the lobby was selling TVs that "fell off the back of a truck", a prostitute named Mercedes knocked on our door and barged in when we answered... you could see some sort of large development construction happening far across the highway (not sure which it was) from our room window...

And I remember the name being Kindly, not sure if that's spelled correctly. I'm not a big AI guy but I resorted to asking that about it and it came up with nothing.

Does this ring any bells or mean anything to anyone?

4-6 year old spices

Over covid I bought huge amounts of powdered spices because I was cooking a bunch, and then faded, and forgot about them entirely.

Cumin, curry, turmeric, garam Masala, coriander... lots of stuff for Indian and Thai.

They were all in ziplocks with the air pressed out and then in another large ziplock. All smell alright and aside from being packed, they're all powdery still if I loosen them up.

I've read that they really just lose potency, but want to double check with the crowd. Thoughts?

Thank you.

Pocket Casts has introduced chapters in episodes

I remember an episode (I believe about ai) where he talks about this happening in Apple(?) and how he was disappointed in it.

I too am disappointed with this introduction : /

I assume this wasn't something he added? I don't remember him mentioning adding them...

Beyond this, it feels like all my common apps have introduced ai components I can't escape. It really feels like being groomed. Not a fan.

Anyone have experience or ideas mounting old knobs as hangers?

Customer has a bunch of these old faucet handles they want to mount to hang hand towels and little things on.

I was thinking about getting a length of wood and running some bolts out from behind every 6" or so. Find some set screws and mount them to the bolts as if you putting them on a faucet valve.

Wherever the set screw lands on the bolt I'd flatten out pretty well so it's less likely to spin. Trying not to make the attachment permanent or I'd just use some sort of adhesive in there.

ULPT - always keep maps open when driving to easily report cops

No matter where I'm going I always have my maps open with a random destination. This way when I see a cop posted somewhere it's really easy to add it to maps for others to see.

Also noce to report road hazards, but whatever.

For anyone who thinks the HD listing image is the correct way to have something installed:

Taken directly from home depot's website. In regard to the whole shelf bracket thing from earlier... just because it's listed as such doesn't mean shit. They don't have tradespeople making their website.

How to focus on breathing but not body sensations?

I know breathing helps me relax but right now I need to not think about my body but DO need to focus on breathing. But as soon as I start on the breath all the body sensations start flooding in.

I have a comedy on in the background and it helps a bit but not nearly enough.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

P.s. tried searching the sub but all I see are 'breathless sensation' posts.

List of music mentioned positively on the podcast?

I'd been marathoning episodes lately and started a list of music he talks about loving or thinking is highly influential (The Human League was the last one) in my notepad but have since lost it : /

Does anyone else have a list going of albums he's mentioned in high regard?

Forest drop-off in beginning of S3E06 Homecoming

Scene: When they're tired of people not dealing in Hamsterdam and round them all up, some get dropped off in the woods and are told to navigate back by the north star. After the cops get back in the van one of the guys turns and looks up. The darkness and sound of insects is obvious.

My story: I used to work on the coast in a marine research facility, sometimes with middle and school students who'd never been outside a city. They'd never seen the stars of a clear night sky. They'd never seen a forest. Never been near the ocean that wasn't part of some dirty harbor covered in trash. One time we were out on a boat and pulled in a net full of fish, crabs, some seahorses, all sorts of stuff. And with each of these experiences the excitement on their faces and amazement in their eyes was by definition *awesome* for me to see. It was usually part of a week/weekend camp, but the difference in their attitude and appearance from start to finish was clear as day.

These students were far from the type of people dropped off in The Wire, but the environments were the same. I'm watching the show for the third time and every time I see this scene it makes me think of those kids.

TL;DR - it's likely that's the first time any of those guys were out in nature and I wonder if it affected any of them. They'd have a bit of a walk and a good amount of time to let it sink in. Idk.. what do you think?

Bad thermostat or water pump

2004 chevy express 3500 6.0L V8

170k miles automatic

Noticed a coolant leak, and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the water pump. I thought the thermostat might be stuck closed which makes me wonder - if so could that cause the leak?

The thing is, lower hose was 108F and upper 150F, but van isn't overheating at all - staying at like 200ish according to the dash cluster which makes me think the water pump has just gone bad? It's not making any unusual noises.

I'm tight on time, money, everything right now so if i can get by with just the thermostat that would be great, but I assume I'd still have to redo the gaskets for the water pump, right? So at that point I might just get the pump, thermostat and housing assembly.
