Dexter Season 6 Review: The weakest season so far

I just finished Season 6, and honestly, this was a huge drop compared to what came before.

My biggest issue is the villain. Every major villain from Seasons 1-5 had some kind of personal connection to Dexter. They challenged him, reflected parts of him, or affected him emotionally in some way. But the Doomsday Killer just feels like a regular case. There’s no real personal rivalry or psychological battle with Dexter, which makes the conflict much less interesting.

The religious themes were also not for me. And to be clear, it’s not because I dislike religious themes in fiction. Daredevil handled religion extremely well because it was deeply connected to Matt’s character, his beliefs, and his struggles. Here, it just felt like a concept placed on top of the story rather than something that naturally fit Dexter.

The side plots were another big problem. There were so many of them, but I honestly didn’t care about most of them. Instead of adding more depth, they often felt like distractions from the main story. A lot of them didn’t feel connected enough to Dexter or the main conflict.

The one side story I actually liked was Brother Sam. His relationship with Dexter was interesting because it gave Dexter a different perspective and challenged some of his beliefs. It was one of the few parts of the season that felt like it was actually exploring Dexter as a character instead of just moving the plot forward.

The villain twist was probably the worst part. The idea could have been interesting, but the execution was messy. A lot of things don’t really make sense when you look back at them. It felt like the twist was designed mainly to shock the audience rather than being a satisfying reveal that was properly built up.

The ending itself was definitely shocking, but that’s kind of the problem. Compared to something like Season 4’s ending, which had both shock value and amazing writing, Season 6’s ending felt like it was only shocking. The moment works because of what happens, not because the season naturally built toward it.

Overall, Season 6 had some interesting ideas, but the execution just wasn’t there. The villain wasn’t memorable, the religious angle didn’t connect with me, most side plots were boring, and the twist felt forced.

Brother Sam was probably the highlight for me, but overall this is easily my least favorite season of Dexter so far.
