It feels like I'm the only person with a special needs sibling

My older (26M) brother has high support needs autism. He's tall, strong, and nonverbal. He also has OCD and ADHD. We've done ABA with him, but my parents didn't follow through so he doesn't use his ipad and he doesn't regulate besides hurting himself by slapping, pinching, and screaming. He doesn't know the word stop. He also has gastrointestinal issues which prevented him from learning how to poop properly until last year. His OCD causes him to rearrange things like clothes, pots and pans, food, and now trash in irregular ways. They make no sense besides whatever logic he has in his head which he can't articulate. On Self injurious behavior, he likes pressure, but only when people are applying it to him. So despite regularly hitting himself, he will use his strength on someone so they can push back.

But what pisses me off is that he is on the precipice for things. Like he can shower himself, he can feed himself, and he can be deceptive. We have locks because he doesn't know how to regulate his eating habits. But he knows how to open locks with keys and does so when we aren't in view. He can wash dishes (though doesn't really clean them out fully). When he organizes bottles or his spoons, he seperates them into pairs of 2s or 3s, showing he can count and organize. For the majority of my life, I always just thought of him as this unthinking, unfeeling guy. He only works off his bodily needs. But a lot of his behaviors honestly feel like stubborness. If we ask him to do something he can do, like pick up his trash, he will just ignore it until we have to get louder. It feels like an issue of motivation, but I feel like its too late to do anything.

But onto why I made the post: the r word. Its coming back into fashion on both sides of the political fence. My fucking psychology and law teacher used it, and I had to be the one to educate her. My classmates didn't say shit. None of these people know what its like to have to sacrifice your free time to take care of a brother who doesn't know/respect your boundaries. Or the fear of having him hurt himself and not being able to stop him. Or the fear of putting him in a program and wondering if he'll be safe.

Ofc old school movies use it, like Scary Movie, White Chicks, Jennifer's Body, and Legally Blonde, but newer movies have also used it like Venom having Eminem drop it in the rap, or even Deadpool and fucking Wolverine. People will always comment on some other problematic aspect of these movies, but never the use of ableism. And even older movies used idiot, moron, and imbecile, which were equivalents of the r word. The 3 Stooges built its whole act from comparing the leads to people with mental disabilities. But bring that up causes ppl to become defensive.

It also makes me hypersensitive of any words that seem to imply mental disability. A new game I play, Deadlock, had a character ask another character how often her mom dropped her. And I immediately made think "is he basically saying she is mental disabled". When I asked people on a discord I'm on, I got mixed messages saying he was just calling her dumb or saying shes dumb because of brain damage. But many of the people there were very condescending, saying I was being too soft. The same thing happened when I posted this on reddit. I didn't know who to believe and I ended up spirialing, and I learned a lot of things that I didn't want to. Like the "No this is Patrick" meme coming from ER where Kevin Michael Richardson played a mentally disabled character. Or the Pinhead Larry joke being based off of people with microcephaly.

I feel so alone in all of this. I don't have anyone to talk to. And I can't get a clear answer on things. Not just about my brother, but about ableism in language and how to deal with it.

[Japanese > English] What is being said in this retro OVA scene?

Context: In the series, The pink haired girl (Birdy) is fused with a boy (Tsutomu), who is represented as a voice here.

I wanted to know what the literal japanese phrase he says to here for not noticing the electricity box in this scene (22:40). Is the translation accurate?

Etymology and Meaning of the phrases "Touched in the Head" and "Dropped on your head"

So I've been thinking about mental health/disability a lot lately, so I was wondering about the meaning of these phrases.

In 11th grade I read Grapes of Wrath and one of the characters calls another character "touched in the head". I assumed it meant mental disability (such as being kicked in the head causing brain damage) but apparently it means to be crazy/mentally disturbed according to dictionary.com and oxford. I say apparently because wikitionary uses mentally deficient and says a synonym would be the r-word and searching up the meaning lead to people who use it in that sense (including an MSW on quora). I don't know which is more correct

Second one, "dropped on your head as a kid" got me some flack. I argued that it implied mental disability from brain damage and I saw a movie clip of some little people telling a clearly mentally disabled clown that, to which he agrees. Others told me it just meant someone who is dumb. Even a r/disability mod. Is their an implication or am I just reading too much into it

Driving while LV is FRUSTRATING

So I'm on my 3rd round of practicing for a CA DL (the 1st time I was busy with school, the 2nd I failed the behind the wheel because I didn't practice enough and the DMV wouldn't let me take it again because my stupid doctor wrote my a new perscription). But now that I'm out of college I have more time but tons of fear.

I'm still afflicted with the mindset that someone LV can't drive. Back in HS and College when I told people about getting my license, I was told to stay off the road and I'm a danger. Especially when I had my cane with me. I struggle with reading street names but beyond a little delay (I think, idk how visiontypicals see lol) I can see other signs just fine. But I always feel like I'm missing something and I'm gonna hit someone or something. Plus having my mom screeching in my ear and manhandling the wheel in her paranoia doesn't help.

I worry that I AM dangerous and I can't even get the special license and I'll never be independent. I don't want to rely on the train or bus for everything, I just want to drive.

Usage of "idiot" in Shakespeare and his thoughts on disability

Mcbeth famous line " It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." didn't mean much to me as a 15 yr old reading it for my english class. I assumed the meaning was the same as today, a stupid person. However, when I got older, I learned that "idiot" used to be a medical term for the mentally disabled, which was turned into a slur and then became common usage. One can easily draw the comparison to the r-word, which isn't fully at the common state (though many are trying).

Obviously, as someone with a nonverbal autstic brother with high support needs, this revelation sent a chill done my spine. A lot of the media, particularly older media like the Three Stooges, which used idiot had more nefarious intentions than I thought. Especially considering the prominence of eugenics in that era. But truly what gets me is the lack of literature and commentary on this than, say, on sexism in classics. Its a complete blindspot in criticism, probably due to the lack of those affected by mental disability being present in academics.

But I digress, back to Shakespeare, I wonder if this meaning holds true? After all, idiot used to mean a private person and by the 19th century became a medical diagnosis as far as I'm aware. Its easy to handwave this off as "politically incorrect villain", but I ran across this article detailing sterotypes of intellectual disability presented in a different character from a different shakespeare play https://doi.org/10.18061/dsq.v40i4.6903. There was another thread about it here, but I couldn't exactly parse it. So, in short, i'm intersted in understanding what the elizabeathen perspective of "an idiot" was and what Shakespeare thought of using it alongside his beliefs on (mental) disability.

Its astounding the amount of white ND people I see that say racist crap and excuse it with Autism

With the slayr vocaloid drama, I'm saying way to many white ND spout microagressions in response to rap. Saying shit like "YN should make more songs like this" or "rap is too overstimulating for me!11!!1!" If you don't like a genre, just say that. Going on and on about why exactly you hate it makes you come off as a hypocrite and more racist. Hell, I searched up rap is overstimulating on reddit and the top results were auadhd subs and more often than not the OP in the comments will start saying racist dogwhistles like its not "real music" or some shit.

Look I'm a black person who doesn't really enjoy rap. I mainly listen to rock. HOWEVER, if you like other genres of music and you aren't also listening to the black creators in those genres (listen to Death if you like rock btw), then your issue isn't sensory overload. Your issue is unchecked racism.

Edit: crap seems like reddit cut out a lot of my initial post.

How and where to resell Bioptic Lens?

When I was 17, I begged my mom to buy me bioptic lens so I could drive. She had me go to this doctor who overcharged her for $5000 and didn't tell me she spent that much until way after. Other doctors have said I don't need those lens for me to drive (and even the doctor himself said I didn't need them), but I was an extremely anxious 17 yr old who wanted independence.

I still feel really bad about it years on. While I don't have my liscene, I would like to recoup at least some of the money. Any good ideas for where I could resell it?

Does the Esoteric Order of Dagon worship Dagon or Cthulu?

Just finished Shadow Over Insmouth (which was a slog to get through) and I was confused when they brought up rising forth for a tribute to Cthulu at the end, despite being named after Dagon. I even read through Dagon (which wasn't a slog) and besides being the Fish God he seems to be the one worshipping at the monolith. I haven't read CoC since I was 15 so his relation to Dagon is lost to me

Mini 99. Mini Evo... or Polaroid?

I'm looking to buy myself an instant camera in the future (hopefully when there's a sale on the camera and the film or if I can find it a good 2nd hand deal).

I'm not a professional, but I do want to be able to get creative with it. I gravitated to the Mini Evo since it would let me select the photos I liked, and download them to an sd card where I could retouch them and put it back to be printed. The downsides are my disinterest in using an app (I'm looking for longevity here) and it feeling too digital and modern apparently (I don't mind having a digital camera to get a 00s feel, but I would like to have that analog feel)

I see a lot of people talking about the Mini 99. I'm not sure I'd like going through the painstaking process of planning and taking a photo and hoping it turns out ok. But it seems like it has some better functionality like a view finder compared to the Mini Evo.

Or I could get a Polaroid if there is something that combines both options. IDK. Tell me which one I should get

I have a 3.69 GPA, did interning at a private practice for a semester, and am doing some volunteer work with 7 cups which was reccomended to me by a faculty advisor. I'm looking for a job through the department of rehab to help me gain experience, but Idk if that will impact my quality as an applicant.

I'm looking to get and LMFT and an LPCC from the program. I want to apply by this fall and I don't want to move out of state.

Why would Emma work with one of the horsemen?

So I never watched the og series (wasn't born yet) and am not overly familiar with her in the comics. I know she develops this "for the children thing" later on but rn she would be a self-interested bussiness woman who wants to take over the world. But my question is why would she rationally help someone associated with Apocalypse? Is she unaware of his plans for mutantkind? I know I talked about her being a business woman, but that explains her selling out X-force. Money is a pretty dumb reason to help someone who is going to enslave you

[USA] Considering Grad School in UCLA for Clinical Psychology... Would I be a Good Applicant?

I graduated 2 months ago from CSUF with a bachelors degree in Sociology and Psychology. I have a 3.69 gpa and many of my professors in both fields liked me. I also interned for a semester at a clinic and did some parent group work there. I was also reccomended to do 7 cups by my faculty advisor to boost my resume (tho I just started a couple of days ago). I'm working on getting a job too.

A professor told me that no one gets into UCLA from CSUF. But I'm hoping at LEAST having 2 degrees would make me look nice, Any Clinical Psyc grads have any thoughts?

Is it Safe being a Therapist?

So I (22F) recently graduated with a degree in Psychology and Sociology. I think I want to be a therapist. I even interned at a clinic for people reffered by the court working in the parent group (which did have some overlap from the DV group, but the most I saw was misogynistic men) for my internship course.

But I've been having some doubts. The start of this year Rebecca White was killed by a patient, which sent me into an existential spiral. Its emphasized that patients are more a risk to themselves than to therapists, but that doesn't mean there's no threat at all. I asked 3 people about it: my internship boss said he was never in danger but then a week later he was like "oh a schizophrenic guy was talking about having thoughts of killing me and that got me nervous, and 2 of my professors said they never felt they were in danger from clients.

I thought I might be able to choose which type of client I want to work with to mitigate this, but apparently thats limited to PP, and I'm not interested in starting one up.

I did take a class in psyc and law, IO psyc, and biopsyc, so I guess those are options. But Im suprising really good at talking to people so I shouldn't waste my talents. I have a couple months before I apply to a grad school and "finalizing" my decision.

Any reason why Rom is called "The Idiot" in JP?

Hi, outsider looking in here. I have a habit of reading wikis for media even if I'm not interested in playing (I just like stories). Anywhoo, reading the wiki on Rom the vacuous, apparently in Japanese she's called "The idiot" but in the old classic sense. So basically the r*t*rd. IK its a ref to Dostoevsky, but it was still a suprise to me. You don't see mentions of mental disability like that in japanese media, let alone a word as strong as that. I assumed that the topic is avoided out of politeness/taboo, hell apparently they have a thing called word hunting which is essentially what we in the west do when we consider a word derrogatory to a group.

Besides the obvious book ref, I can't seem to find any info why the writers chose a medical title instead of going for poetic titles that pack the same punch like Vacuous.
