"In the 1960s, transplants were often fatal. Most donated kidneys came from close relatives with similar genetics to the patient, to improve the chances that a recipient’s immune system would not reject the new organ.

Dr. Russell was able to bridge the gap between laboratory studies, which pointed the way to suppressing the immune reaction, and clinical practice.

At Mass General, Dr. Russell founded a laboratory in the 1960s to study transplantation biology, which has evolved into the hospital’s Center for Transplantation Sciences, with 80 specialists working in 19 labs. Gradually, survival rates improved.

“The early results, as he himself said in retrospect, were terrible,” said Dr. Pierson, who is himself a transplant surgeon. Dr. Russell learned from each operation. “As the decade ended, the success rate went from 20 percent or less to 40 or 50 percent,” Dr. Pierson said.

As more desperately ill patients sought transplants and more hospitals offered the surgeries, matching donors to recipients became an organizational challenge.

In 1968, Dr. Russell founded the Boston Interhospital Organ Bank, now New England Donor Services, to procure organs and match donors and recipients. Today, it works with nearly 200 hospitals in six states and Bermuda.

The Women's Voter Register Dataset is created from Election Department registers used to register women voters in 1920 after the passage of the 19th Amendment. The dataset contains information about newly registered women voters including name, address, place of birth, occupation, place of work, naturalization information, and closest male relative. This dataset is in progress and is updated periodically as additional voter registers are transcribed.

"On the basis of the data we have in Cleveland, low-cost housing must range from $1,200 to $3,000, which is high; preferably $2,500 should be the total cost to meet the incomes of the people who must live in these homes. These figures are derived from allowing 20 percent of the total income to go for shelter. The financing is based on a 10 per cent gross in the case of the higher brackets and an 8 percent gross for the lower brackets, because in the lower brackets we believe the new Housing Authority will be able to take advantage of the 30 percent grant and possibly tax exemption. The experimental building in the city will be a definite attempt to bring the cost of that building. Including the land and all other charges, to $2,500 per unit, which at a 10 percent gross for a five room apartment will produce $4 per month rental per room."
