Rex loves the moorlands

We live in the 'burbs but the moors are only a 20 minute drive away. Rex will (barely) tolerate the journey but once we get on the trail there's no stopping him. Sometimes he can be a bit too eager, especially when descending rocky scree tracks and I still bear the scars f when he pulled me into a blackthorn hedge... He's also fascinated by wind turbines so this is a great day out for both of us. I couldn't wish for a better hiking buddy 😍

Plugins and iPadOS - clarification needed

Just moved over from Obsidian and running Joplin on iPadOS 26.6, Mac OS and Android. Installed the Extra Markdown Editor Settings plugin, and the Journal plugin on Android. It's not available on iPadOS though apparently due to Apple policy.

Can someone clarify this for me? It's not a dealbreaker right now but it's annoying. Is it something to do with nested folders?

What will happen to all the copper cable?

Now that there's a major push to get fibre installed, what will happen to all the old cables? I'm talking more about copper between poles rather then underground. Will engineers visiting homes just leave them up there or remove them?

Fellow preppers .. we are doing the right thing

We know we've been doing the right thing for some time now and hopefully your stocks are building up. I came across this video today, and Neil tells it like it is: many worrying statements and statistics in the video but worst of all is the Government's response to the crisis. It's not just the current Government, it's the past few who've neglected to keep infrastructure maintained and see farmers as cash cows with apparently deep pockets. The fallback has always been to import food but that's getting very difficult (and expensive) now. Ultimately it'll only be us, the prepared who will help us and we should be under illusion that anyone else will.

Bury treats in the garden? Too much effort!

Rex has figured out that if he buries treats in the garden, he sometimes forgets where and other times he needs me to open the door for him. So now he just rolls the treat up in the folds of the rug in the lounge: easier for everyone!

My working home ZIM creation setup

I recently updated my ZIM creation script so that it worked and can pass it on to you. I run Debian 13 here so it's quite straightforward. Hope it helps!

First, install zimwriterfs which is found in the zim-tools package. I used apt install zim-tools.

Please note that the image you use for the illustration icon must be in PNG format 48x48.

Here's my folder structure - all the files to be used are in a folder called DEMO

DEMO
+-- demo.png
+-- index.html
\+-- pix
+-- demo.png
\+-- videos
+-- 1.mp4
+-- 2.mp4
+-- 3.mp4

Here's the script: this is run from the folder under DEMO:

zimwriterfs -v -j \
--welcome=index.html \
--illustration=demo.png \
--language=eng \
--title="Demo Video Podcasts" \
--name="Demo Video Podcasts" \
--description="Description appears in Kiwix Library" \
--creator=Me \
--publisher="The Publisher" \
--source=assets \
DEMO \

Colchicine worked great: is allopurinol now a must-have?

I had a flare-up that lasted about 10 days and my doctor prescribed 12 Colchicine tablets (4 days) which cleared up the pain and I can now live a normal life.

I'm due to have a blood test in 1 month and my question is, if I'm pain free now, depending on the results, do I really need to take Allopurinol? I ask this because from what I read here, Allo will help dissolve the crystals but there's the possibility of more flare-ups while it's ongoing.

Disclaimer: I know everyone is different so this is just a general question: no medical advice asked for.

Need a working hardware/software parental control system!

TL-DR; I manage a Windows 10 (soon to be 11) PC which is a public-access terminal used by all age groups. I need a working solution for a parental control/adult content access problem. The Parental Control in my router does not filter this material/sites out. I set up Parental Controls on the TP-Link EX820v V1 router but it doesn't work (advice pending).

The PC is set up with Local accounts: mine is an admin account, guests use a guest account which is cleared out after logout by a Group Policy that I set up.

Is there an effective solution for this? I have a budget but not a large one.

EX820v V1 parental controls not working

I've set up the Parental Controls screen with a rule set based on pre-teen and have assigned the single device connected via Ethernet that will be affected by it. I've added additional domains and tested it, and the domains are not being blocked.

If I want to block https://dailymail.com I add dailymail.com and also www.dailymail.com but this simply doesn't work. If I click on Insights I can see the domain but nothing is happening.

I really need this to work as it's in a public-access Windows 10 machine. It doesn't rotate MAC addresses.

Got this for my dog: might wear it as well

I sometimes have to leave my (muzzled) doggy tied up while I nip into the shop quickly. He's very friendly but occasionally gets grumpy if someone gets in his face too much, so I got this. Now that I think about it I could wear it myself if I'm in a bad mood 😁 Win-win!

Failed installation due to (wireless) Telecare unit!

I finally decided to make the switch from Residential Copper to Full Fibre Max Regrade 🎉

Bought a beast of a router, tidied up the network and the engineer arrived. Drilled hole for fibre cable, disconnected old line and went to do pole work. On his way out he asked if we had a Telecare device (old peoples' panic button). Yes we do, for elderly relative but it's standalone and uses an eSIM to call out if activated.

So he had to cancel the job there and then! He apologised and said it happened a lot. None of the ISPs apparently ask if there's a Telecare system in place so lots of installs get cancelled, even if they're totally wireless.

Now I have to wait until Zen sees the job as cancelled, someone has to get an exemption certificate from the Telecare manufacturer and I have to wait for another appointment: possibly up to 2 weeks. Not happy 😡

At least he reconnected my old broadband and hopefully Zen won't cease the line until I get my new one!

So can someone tell me why, if this happens so often, has nobody thought to add this simple question to the order form:

"Does the property have a Telecare or similar alarm system even if it is mobile/SIM based?"

Nooch/nutritional cheese - is it safe?

I'm 3 days post-colchicine (12 tablets) and it's helped a lot. I'm trying to improve my diet though and am reading the usual sites for advice.

Apparently yeast is a big no-no, so I was wondering if nooch is still ok to eat? It's deactivated yeast, but it's still yeast so I'm cautious. Has anyone had any experience of this?

Installed Parallels Home Edition yesterday

I already had UTM on my Airbook M3 but I wanted something similar for my knockabout Neo as I wanted a small Linux distro to tinker with. After watching few YouTube videos I installed the free trial of Parallels, although at first I was sceptical of its memory claims. The installation was very smooth and I installed the recommended Debian 12 distro. At about 6Gb it didn't take up too much space. I know it's widely touted as the best way to run Windows 11 but I didn't see the point of installing a dying spyware blob.

The Debian instance runs very well and I plan to do further testing ver the coming week. At some stage I hope to add Haiku and Tiny Linux. Great fun!

Is it common for gout to follow an attack of shingles?

A week before I was due to get my shingles vaccination I contracted shingles. Not really bad but enough to make me rather uncomfortable for 2 weeks. That passed, I had a glass of red wine to celebrate and a couple of days later I got gout in my left foot. Very painful and it's not going away. Is this a perfect combination of shingles then gout, or just bad luck?

Oxford Uni asking for volunteers to test their new Ebola vaccine

This is not a doom-post!

Well, they've done it again! This time they've quickly developed a vaccine for the latest Ebola scourge in DR Congo, so now they want volunteers in the UK to "help them test it out because want to send it over to Africa". Apparently we "might feel a bit sore and under the weather for a few days". Hmmm... 😬

Moment family's newbuild home is destroyed by 'solar panel fire'

This seems to be maybe the start of a trend (hopefully not) - second one I've read about in a week. It's worrying when newbuilds are having panels as standard and I assume are bought in bulk and fitted to the same standard.

Does anyone know what might be causing this ?

Mudi 7 (v2) EU - what backup options are there?

Proud owner of a Mudi 7 which performs very well. However, this morning it failed to boot so after a couple failed attempts I put it on charge: everything then worked.

The problem I have is that I don't see any option to run a backup, and this is the first router I've owned where this doesn't seem to exist. Does the facility exist, if so where is it? If not, can you please add one?

Reflecting on the weekend

This weekend should have been the UK National Fox Terrier Meet held in Derbyshire which is about 2 hours drive for us. We were very sad when it was cancelled (due to lack of registrations), but now that we're in the hottest June in UK records, that looks to have been a blessing in disguise.

Not only would the drive have been awful despite the car aircon, our motel room would have been unbearable due to lack of aircon (pretty standard in the UK) so Rex would have really suffered. Then the event itself - set in a large open field with no shelter, with 200+ doggies? It would have been too much for all concerned.

So instead, Rex and I had our first walkies in 3 days and walked to our favourite local park, part of which is now being left as a mini-meadow. My boy loves long grass anyway, and he's a big wild flower fan of which there are now many. We came back and I dunked him in a deep tray full of cool water and washed his legs and belly - amazingly he cooperated and had been happily enjoying the cool of the house.

It's very rare that we'll pass up a day out but fate intervened and saved us from a roasting!

Local unmowed verges looking rather nice now

Calderdale decided to save money and extend no-mow May indefinitely. My dog loves it as he gets to rummage through the undergrowth in a more urban setting. Now we have some rather luxurious mini-meadows, and this one at our small park has really developed quickly.
