StoneEra is now available to Wishlist on Steam! 🪨

After months of development, StoneEra finally has its Steam page live and can now be added to your wishlist.
StoneEra is a voxel-based colony survival & management game where you build settlements, shape the terrain, assign professions, gather resources, farm, craft, mine underground, and try to keep your colony alive in a changing procedural world.
The game is still in active Alpha development, with a lot more planned on the road to release.
Coming October 2026.

What makes a colony builder feel alive?

I’m working on StoneEra, a voxel colony survival / strategy game where villagers build, gather, and grow a settlement.

I’ve been polishing the character animation pass, and I’d love feedback from other base-builder players: what small details or animations make a colony feel alive to you?

StoneEra — Colony Builder in a Voxel World (Alpha 0.9.7 Update)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on StoneEra, a colony management game set in a voxel world, built with Unity 6 and C#. The game focuses on construction, villager professions, resource management, and survival systems.

I recently released private alpha v0.9.7, so I wanted to share both the visible changes and some of the technical work behind them.

Technical overview

The world uses a custom chunk-based voxel system. Terrain is generated procedurally from a seed, with separate generation steps for height, biomes, rivers, caves, ores, trees, and vegetation.

Voxel data is kept separate from rendering. Instead of creating a GameObject for every block, each chunk builds combined solid and water meshes. When the player edits terrain, only the affected chunk and its boundary neighbours are marked for rebuilding.

The construction tools are also custom-built. They support Single, Line, Plane, and Box placement:

  • Single mode paints blocks while dragging.
  • Lines can snap to the dominant axis.
  • Planes can be locked to the floor or either wall direction.
  • Boxes can be solid or hollow.
  • Large edits are previewed and then applied as a batch.

The Layers tool allows players to hide upper parts of buildings and work on individual floors. Placement targeting is projected onto the selected layer so roofs and upper walls do not interfere with interior building.

Villagers use voxel-aware pathfinding and job systems. A worker must find a reachable position outside a workstation’s collider before starting a task. Villager state also controls movement, work animations, sleeping, stamina, hunger, and job transitions.

For rendering and performance, the project uses:

  • Chunk-level mesh generation and rebuilding
  • GPU-instanced rendering for repeated objects such as crops and stockpiles
  • Shared meshes and materials
  • Level-of-detail handling for vegetation
  • Frame-distributed world generation
  • Dynamic shadow distance based on the strategy-camera zoom level

The save system stores the procedural world identity together with player terrain edits, buildings, villagers, animals, inventory, and camera state. Loading regenerates the base world and restores the saved runtime changes.

What changed in v0.9.7

  • Redesigned main menu, settings, loading screens, and in-game HUD
  • Improved Colony, Orders, Stock, Craft, People, and Layers menus
  • New construction shapes, rotations, and multi-cell building brushes
  • Improved villager jobs, pathfinding, sleep, and survival behaviour
  • Improved production stations, stockpiles, lighting, fire, and smoke
  • Added English and Russian localization
  • General stability and interface improvements

The project is still in active alpha development. Right now I’m focused on making construction feel predictable, keeping the interface readable, and ensuring the simulation remains stable as worlds and settlements grow.

Here’s a look at the current menus and building tools.

I’d especially appreciate feedback on the building workflow, UI readability, and camera controls.

StoneEra – Official Pre Alpha Trailer

A world untamed.
A living colony.
Build. Craft. Endure.
Raise your stronghold.
Survive the night.
Welcome to StoneEra — a pixel-art survival colony builder set in a harsh, beautiful prehistoric world.
In this trailer you will see the birth of a settlement: from the first steps in a wild, untamed forest, to gathering resources, raising animals, crafting tools, building walls, and finally standing strong against the darkness of night.
Carve your path through dense forests, rivers and open plains. Manage your people, grow your food, craft what you need, and turn a vulnerable camp into a fortified stronghold. Every decision matters. Every night is a test.
StoneEra is a game about starting from nothing and creating something that lasts.
Your age begins.

Hi everyone! I’m a solo developer building StoneEra, a voxel colony-survival strategy game inspired by RimWorld, Minecraft and the old, probably now lesser-known Timber and Stone.

You guide a small group of villagers: gather resources, mine underground, build a settlement block by block, assign professions, survive changing seasons, and shape a procedurally generated world.
It’s still in development, but I’d genuinely love feedback on the concept and current direction. I’m also looking for people interested in alpha testing.

I’m building a voxel colony simulation game and I’d like some advice from experienced developers.

. My current focus is on making the gameplay engaging rather than adding lots of features. What are the biggest mistakes you’ve made when developing management/colony simulation games? I’d really appreciate any advice on game design, progression, or things you wish you had known earlier
