> On the outside, the Yesteryear Music Gallery looks like a dinghy little warehouse. But on the inside, a passion for music burns, as exhibited by some 20,000 vinyl records and vintage cassette tapes containing Filipino music—the oldest of which is a record of the songs of Maria Carmena, 100 years and counting. >
> Seventy-nine-year-old Nestor Reyes Veracruz began collecting the tapes since his retirement from banking back in 1998. His favorites include the zarzuela songs of Atang dela Rama and Vicente Ocampo; he even has a tape of the songs of Fernando Poe Jr.

Cheapest and Best Setup for Classical Music in a 24 sq m room

The old system (still working) is a JVC EX-A5 (from 2005, with a CD player and 30W per speaker) and a Jamo 200 (200W subwoofer, because the salesman recommended it to make up for the lack of depth in the sound), with around 2,000 classical music CDs (top-notch, from Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Hyperion, Chandos, etc., and mostly purchased brand new at 75 percent off because distributors were offloading them and almost no one wanted to buy them, and also some jazz from Verve, Blue Note, and so on, plus blues).

The room is at most 24 sq m (580 sq ft).

What setup would you suggest that would be similar to the one above but cost no more than 1,000 USD, and preferably as low as 500 USD? The albums can also be ripped to FLAC or similar, to be played in a dedicated media player, if not from a PC, laptop, or smartphone in the same room, with the CDs archived somewhere (or can still be played from a computer DVD drive).

The place is in SE Asia, which means mostly Edifiers are available, with SMSL imported from China, and other brands probably 25 percent more expensive, and sometimes with only the seller's warranty.

Reel-to-reel tape recorders: How Bing Crosby helped launch a home audio revolution (1940s-70s)

https://clickamericana.com/topics/science-technology/getting-real-with-vintage-reel-to-reel-tape-recorders

> Bing Crosby is the reason that machine found an audience. Crosby wanted to pre-record his weekly radio show instead of performing live every week, and after testing a Magnetophon he was sold on tape as a production tool. > > He bought the first Ampex Model 200 built, then ordered nineteen more, and his production company became Ampex’s exclusive distributor for several years, selling recorders to radio stations and studios around the country. Reel-to-reel machines soon became standard equipment in broadcasting and music production, and by the 1950s smaller, cheaper models had made their way into homes, schools and offices for dictation, music and general voice recording.

Homer vs. Hollywood: Daniel Mendelsohn on Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey

https://www.nybooks.com/online/2026/07/31/homer-vs-hollywood-discussing-christopher-nolans-odyssey/

> In this special hour-long edition of NYRSeminars recorded July 29, 2026, Daniel Mendelsohn, Editor-at-Large of The New York Review and author of the most recent translation of Homer’s epic, discusses Christopher Nolan’s polarizing blockbuster adaptation of the Odyssey. Mendelsohn outlines his judgment of the film, which he reviewed at length for the Review, and then opens the floor to questions from audience members. Among the topics addressed are the debate over the fidelity of the film’s sets, ships, and costumes; the film’s handling of its female characters; and the question of whether the director’s vision of Odysseus represents a betrayal of the epic’s values.

Barkadan: Filipino-inspired survival horror roleplaying game launches on Kickstarter

https://www.geeknative.com/240361/barkadan-filipino-inspired-survival-horror-roleplaying-game-launches-on-kickstarter/

> Set in a bustling metropolis where predatory mages and parasitic demons target fragile urban settlements, the setting centres heavily on community-driven survival. Players take on the roles of ordinary citizens connected by shared social bonds; whether as childhood friends, immediate neighbours, or individuals raised by the same local Lola (grandma). Instead of traditional dungeon crawling, characters must navigate social hierarchies, gather scarce resources in bustling markets modelled on real-world locations like the SM Mall of Asia, and preserve their public reputation. Crucially, simple cultural acts such as forgetting to offer a mano po gesture of respect to an elder carry mechanical weight that can directly influence a group’s standing within the city.

Security flaw in Vatican’s ‘Click to Pray’ app leaves over 700,000 global users exposed — app has been leaking user data for over six months and still does

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/cyber-security/security-flaw-in-vaticans-click-to-pray-app-leaves-over-700-000-global-users-exposed-app-has-been-leaking-user-data-for-over-six-months-and-still-does

> Click To Pray, the official prayer app of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, was found to have zero security by a security researcher. According to BobDaHacker, they discovered in January 2026 that the Vatican-linked app had zero security, allowing anyone to access user data through the API endpoint by simply typing in user IDs. They emailed nine individuals about the vulnerabilities as soon as they discovered them but received no responses and saw no changes for six months. > > The information that anyone could get from the Click To Pray app’s database included first and last names, email addresses, and birthdates, among other information. You may not think this is much, but getting names and email addresses is more than enough for bad actors to start sending phishing emails to vulnerable users. BobDaHacker also pointed out that most of the app's users are likely older people who aren’t tech-savvy, so any enterprising scammer could tap into the app for a literal treasure trove of email addresses.

I've Spent Decades in Editing Rooms. Here's Why Alien Still Terrifies Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PB9mxHJV0M

> Matt examines why Alien's $4.2M budget produced a film that still terrifies while modern horror burns through eight times that, how Scott's deep-black cinematography turned a budget limitation into a visual language, and the specific editing and pacing decisions that make the chestburster scene land 47 years later. No review scores. No nostalgia. A filmmaker's honest breakdown of the craft.

To the mods, I don't think AI was used in his videos.

The vlogger's Matt Feury:

> But if you prod him a little, he reveals that he got his degree in film from Boston University at right about the time that Avid was starting up. He found his professional home there (he’s now Senior Director of Artist Relations) and began dabbling with The Rough Cut in 2005. In 2019 he got serious about it, and since then it’s been a weekly industry resource, providing deep insights into the art and craft behind the biggest movies and shows rolled up in a lively and engaging discussion. Learning and laughing—what more could you want?
