Why are cinemas suddenly slashing ticket prices?

https://tribune.net.ph/2026/07/04/why-are-cinemas-suddenly-slashing-ticket-prices

> Consumers today have more choices than ever. Streaming platforms, social media, video games, live theater, concerts and countless other leisure activities are competing for the same audience. Inflation has also made Filipino households more selective about how they spend their discretionary income. Every entertainment purchase is weighed more carefully than before. > > ... > > The bigger question is whether affordability alone can change audience behavior.

Michael Jordan can’t swim (on ADMU and the recent tragedy) - from the Gold Star Daily

https://mindanaogoldstardaily.com/archives/157939

> Good thing Jordan and Barkley didn’t have to go through the Ateneo Blue Eagles’ elimination-style tryout. Otherwise, the NBA would have lost two of the world’s greatest basketball players of all time. > > ... > > Who will believe ADMU once it reverts back to its compassionate self, fighting for human rights? Who will now fight for the less fortunate if ADMU could not even take care of its own basketball players? And this was not the only incident. There was Lenny Villa who died in 1991 after injuries sustained at a frat hazing. That frat was not accredited by ADMU, though, so it was easier then to do a “hugas-kamay” over his death.

From Lovecraft's Letters to Moore and Others

https://github.com/punchmonster/Lovecraft-Letters/blob/master/19370207-Catherine-L-Moore.md

> The serious, non-commercial aesthetics of today suffers, as I have suggested above, from two distinct maladies—the irrational & solipsistic freakishness of the subjective decadent, & the prosaic propagandism of the social theorist. The decadent concedes the existence of such a thing as disinterested art, but allows the futilities & absurdities & paradoxes & contradictions of the dying capitalist culture to disorganise him to such an extent that he can reflect nothing but chaos, paradox, hallucination, & ironic contrast. The theorist, on the other hand, refuses to admit that any such thing as art exists as an independent entity. To him (& he is usually an orthodox Marxist who reads an economic motive into everything from the motions of binary stars to the sighing of the wind in the trees), every human activity must have a direct bearing on the technical problems of organising human society for the optimum fulfilment of the majority's physical needs; & art is justifiable only so far as it promotes the successful operation—or hastens the adoption—of a rational social order. Betwixt the two types, we get a sorry enough mess of nonsense & mediocrity. > > ... > > But the real joke of course is, that all this isn't a matter of choice anyhow! Capitalism is dying from internal as well as external causes, & its own leaders & beneficiaries are less & less able to kid themselves. I'm no economist, but from recent reading I've been able to form a rough picture of the dilemma—the need to restrict consumers' goods & to pile up a needless plethora of producing equipment in order to maintain the irrational surplus called profit—which has caused orthodox economists like Hayek & Robbins to admit that only starvation wages & artificial scarcity could stabilize the profit system in future & avert increasing cyclical depressions of utterly destructive scope. Laissez-faire capitalism is dead—make no mistake about that. The only avenue of survival for plutocracy is a military & emotional fascism whereby millions of persons will be withdrawn from the industrial arena & placed on a dole or in concentration-camps with high-sounding patriotic names. That or socialism—take your choice. In the long run it won't be the New Deal but the mere facts of existence which will be recognised as the real & inevitable slayer of Hooverism. Nobody is going to "destroy the system"—for it has been destroying itself ever since it evolved out of the old agrarian-handicraft economy a century & a half ago.

Time for Ateneo to look beyond Jesuit leadership

https://www.gmanetwork.com/regionaltv/essays/114519/time-for-ateneo-to-look-beyond-jesuit-leadership/story/

> When my father attended Ateneo in the 1950s, many of his professors were Jesuit legends — among them, Fathers Irwin, Bernad, Arevalo, Reuter, and his favorite, Horacio de la Costa, after whom I was named. Yet, when my son graduated from Ateneo just last year, he told me he did not have a single Jesuit teacher throughout his four years. When I lived in Cervini dormitory on campus in the 1970s, we always had at least two Jesuits living with us, and I’d sometimes get invited for dinner at the Jesuit residence. My son, also a Cervini dormer, never had that kind of interaction. > > That simple fact says much about how dramatically the university and Society of Jesus have changed.

Manuscript and printed survivors of WWII

https://opinion.inquirer.net/192686/manuscript-and-printed-survivors-of-wwii

> Contrary to popular belief, the destruction of the National Museum and the NLP collection was not total. My research in both institutions shows that not everything was destroyed. Five percent may seem like a big loss, but this was the jewel of the NLP; the most important books and manuscripts actually survived the war. A report from January 1946 states that before the war, the NLP had an estimated “650,000-700,000 volumes, pamphlets, etc., of which 36,607 have been salvaged.” Figures were given for the art collection, but I am not sure if this was the prewar count or what survived, but the National Gallery listed: “151 paintings, 55 sculptures and carvings, 575 rare historical objects and specimens, 3,543 maps, and 75,534 postage stamps.” T.M. Kalaw, in his introduction to the 1938 printed museum catalog, states that the inventory was incomplete because of the sheer number of items. Only what was deemed important or “more representative” was listed. > > In December 1944, at the tail end of the war, the library collections were in three locations. The Legislative Building (now the National Museum of the Philippines) housed the general collection: Filipiniana, reference, periodicals, public documents, etc.—”a total of about 300,000 volumes, plus about 250,000 unbound pamphlets, etc. mostly public documents.” When the Japanese occupied the Legislative Building in late 1944, library officials had the good sense to transfer its treasures across the street to the Normal School Building (now Philippine Normal University) and Manila City Hall. In the ground floor of the Normal School were “about 2,500 to 3,000 volumes of rare Filipiniana, and several thousands of valuable reference books and documents.” The most important items, like the “original letters of Dr. Jose Rizal and other valuable documents published in the Epistolario Rizalino, were deposited in the east vault of the City Hall for safekeeping.”

https://fastbreak.com.ph/ateneo-group-opposes-uaap-sanctions-before-probe-findings/sports-galore/

> The statement was issued in response to comments by sports commentator Quinito Henson, who reportedly suggested sanctions similar to those previously imposed on De La Salle and Adamson, including the possibility of Ateneo’s withdrawal from the UAAP. > > According to the group, the comparison is misplaced because the cases involving De La Salle and Adamson centered on established violations of UAAP eligibility rules.

Jose Mari Chan reveals he no longer receives royalties from his hit songs

https://entertainment.inquirer.net/674913/jose-mari-chan-reveals-he-no-longer-receives-royalties-from-his-hit-songs

Edit: What affects him also affects many other performers, including those who aren't wealthy.

And what are the repercussions of this on OPM and performers, i.e., the effects of declining record sales and (paid) digital consumption?

> Jose Mari Chan revealed that he has stopped receiving royalties from his songs due to declining record sales and digital consumption. > > ... > > “Unfortunately, since record sales are almost zero now, nobody buys records. Nobody buys CDs anymore. They download. And so, it’s hard to quantify those. So, I have not been receiving my checks from those recording companies,” he said.

TIL: The Story of the “Ghost Highway” Extension Along Katipunan Road in White Plains, QC

https://www.esquiremag.ph/long-reads/profiles/today-i-learned-katipunan-white-plains-highway-extension-a5260-20260622-dyn

> If you’re like me—a longtime Quezon City resident who’s spent years stuck in traffic along Katipunan Avenue in White Plains—you’ve probably glanced at the garden shops and restaurants on the southbound side and wondered: Shouldn’t there be another lane there? > > ... > > The story of Katipunan’s “missing” lanes involves a three-decade legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court multiple times. It’s also the story of how a grand vision for a 38-meter-wide highway gave way to urban planning whims and a "Gordian knot" of red tape.
