We loved the Split Jump, so here's a sneak peek at how it looks in our game [WIP]

The Split Jump is one of those moves we loved from Classic Stealth Games.

This is still very much a work in progress — animations and timing are being refined — but we're happy enough with how it's feeling that we wanted to share. Sage: Psychic Spy is a stealth action-adventure where your abilities are psychic instead of lethal: read minds, move objects, slip past guards without firing a shot.

Would love to hear what you think, especially from folks who know their stealth games. What other classic moves would you want to see?

Still WiP but finally got Split Jump feeling right. Sage: Psychic Spy is our love letter to classic stealth games.

Been heads down building Sage: Psychic Spy — a stealth action-adventure where your weapons are psychic abilities instead of guns. The Split Jump was non-negotiable for us. Classic stealth fans will know why.

Enemy Concept Art: Krad Industries PMC Soldiers - Standard

Krad Industries is a mulitnational conglomerate. Technology, weapons, defense, cybersecurity, military services, consumer products. They're called the company of tomorrow.

Krad Industries has a seemingly positive public reputation, but with darker, mysterious, nefarious operations underneath the surface.

Krad City was originally called Havenville, later renamed in appreciation of the company, due to saving the town from near economic collapse. The town became a metropolis in an unprecedently short amount of time, due to the company investing many of it's profits into building up the city for whatever it needed.

Krad Industries has a Private Military Corporation. Although they are often contracted out to seem legit on paper, their real purpose is to be a strike team for operations on behalf of the company, often covertly.

The Krad Standard enemies are more powerful than your average gangster. They come equipped with silent pistols, to limit public attention during operations. They wear combat gear and purposely look like police officers, meant to trick the public into thinking they're local authorities. Krad Enemies wear communicators, to coordinate with each other and Tactical Operations Command.

Experienced, well-equipped, and well-prepared. These guards are amongst Sage's most capable foes.

Are any of you Superhero fans?

Doing a general poll, because I’m curious if there’s an overlap between fans of the Stealth genre and Superhero genre

Side note: I loved doing stealth in Spider-Man games. He’s not typically known for it but man, it’s still a lot of fun.

Cel-Shader tests - Using light bands to tell players how dark an area is without needing HUD UI

We created a 7-band cel-shader for the game. The cel-shader has gone through multiple iterations so that we can achieve the comicbook aesthetic, while simultaneously creating dark shadowy environments that give the players two things:

- Shadow areas that create opportunities to hide

- Beautifully lit environments that make it feel like you're playing a comicbook videogame

A common feedback from our last playtest was that the art style and the cel-shader felt off. That's because we're using temporary assets! These are high-poly assets with a cel-shader applied. We plan to create original stylized assets that will look beautiful with the cel-shader.

High-poly assets tend to look worse cel-shaded compared to low-poly ones. We just needed the high-poly ones to test if the cel-shader works or not :)

Hear Me Out: I Thought This Game Was Kind of Fun

For a fighting game, it stands out amongst other Marvel games. I think it had cool concepts that could have been interesting if it got a sequel or a spiritual successor

What Are The Chances of an X-Men Legends Remake?

This game had such a huge influence on me as a game developer. My final project for graduation was a Superhero Action RPG based on Xmen Legends. It was one of the hardest things I ever did, and despite that, if someone offered me to remake X-Men Legends, I still would.

What are the chances of an X-Men Legends Remake? Has anyone tried pitching it to Marvel/Disney? If they're rejecting it, does anyone know why?

For Strategy fans, how many of you play Stealth games?

I'm a game dev doing research. I've noticed that a lot of satisfying elements of stealth games seem to overlap with strategy games, especially turn-based ones.

I want to put my hypothesis to a test. As a fan of strategy games, do you like stealth games?

Yes and no answers are both welcome. Even better if you can describe why. I would like to take notes and make improvements to my game based on your thoughts. You guys would be helping me out. Thank you!

What about making factions in Endless Legend is the most challenging?

I love the Endless Legend factions. Every faction is so unique that I'm okay with the lower number, if that means they're more interesting to play.

But Endless Legend has 14 factions against Civ 6's 70 leaders across 50 playable countries. What makes these factions harder to make?

There's obvious stuff like:

- Narrative. They have to write original factions, characters and quests, while staying consistent with lore. Then you also need heroes as well

- Fewer employees. Firaxis has 200 to 300 employees, amplitude is somewhere under 200.

- Mechanics. Balancing the different empires is probably very difficult. You have faction-specific abilities and tech

- Concept art + Design. They likely need original art, design, iterations, etc before they can finalize faction concepts. They also have to spend time designing so that the factions are satisfying to play as

- Technology. Civilization has had 6 iterations and uses an in-house engine. Amplitude is using Unity. There's pros and cons to both. Amplitude also makes games in multiple genres. So chances are, they need the engine to stay generalized rather than be really good at one specific type of game.

- Updates. Civ 6 was updating the game with new leaders all the way until Civ 7. So of course they'd have more leaders/factions, due to how long they spent updating the game.

Asking this because we're game developers. If we ever want to make a 4X game, we'd want to to understand this before going into it. We love Endless Legend, so understanding what makes it more challenging would really give us insight. Your thoughts would be super helpful!

Youtubers that cover Stealth Games - Recommend them to Us!

We're looking to get our game covered by Youtubers with a following. It'd be really helpful to get the thoughts of them and their fans. We'd even be interested in any Youtubers that would like to do interviews.

Could you recommend some Stealth game Youtubers to us? Their feedback/thoughts/suggestions (and those of their fans) would be taken back to the team to see if we can incorporate those improvements into our game :)

Loved Mark Bagley's art on Ultimate Spider-man! One of our artists made this piece in a similar style

I grew up reading the Ultimate Spider-man comics. Feels surreal to see my own original superhero done in a similar style.

Tips on how to make a successful Kickstarter campaign?

I'm prepping my studio to put our videogame project on Kickstarter to get some funding. Currently, my plan is to put out a demo for the next Steam Next Fest (not the one this month). I'm also doing some early marketing now to get some traction and buzz.

Aside from what I've mentioned, do you guys have tips for how I can get a lot of attention on my Kickstarter campaign?

Enemy AI features that can make a stealth game feel unique?

I often think of F.E.A.R and how their enemy AI could throw down props for cover, or play dead to sneak up behind you when you aren't looking.

I'm making a game more similar to Splinter Cell. Do you guys have suggestions on how to design my AI, beyond simply reacting to doors opening/closing, lights going out, or hearing sounds?

Tips and Improvements for Cel-Shaders in Unreal Engine 5

https://preview.redd.it/16qi0g0pbp6h1.png?width=1815&format=png&auto=webp&s=24ca122f3dae52b1b57f13d18cb0c878952ab6ab

We're currently using a 7-band cel-shader in Unreal Engine 5. It's our first time using a cel-shader, do you have any tips for how to make it stand out strongly for a game with comic-book graphics?

Do you also have ideas for improvements? We have Shadow Contrast and AO intensity. I want to think of other features that benefit our artists and designers, but can't think of anything.

What was your favourite story arc from the USM comics?

I loved Ultimate Knights. There were really strong moments like Daredevil being pushed to the edge, with Spider-man having to talk him down. Moon Knight revealing his identity so he could testify against Kingpin.

I read the comic growing up as a kid, so I had never seen that much tension (both internally against themselves, and externally against villains) between superheroes before.
