For those who need a reminder the episode is about Jean saying she’s treated as someone who needs to be protected because she can’t handle herself because she’s a girl so she forms a girl only group to fight crime.

The problem is that this idea that the women of the show are treated differently isn’t true.

Jean has been given leadership roles and is treated as a member of the team as capable as any other such as Scott or Kurt if not more so and she’s been treated with respect in pretty much every episode.
Other members such as Rogue or Kitty have also never been treated differently because of their gender.

Jean complains that Scott is sexist but throughout the whole show he’s treated her and every other girl such a Kitty or Rogue as an equal.

Also Storm is a teacher and is treated with the same authority as Wolverine or Beast so the women on the show have never been treated as lesser be they adults or teens.

Something else that bothers me is that the girls engage in rather immoral behaviour and it’s treated for laughs such as when Tabitha invades Toad’s privacy, shaving Blob’s hair and stealing Lance’s car. If the roles were reversed the boys would be treated as the bad guys for this and rightly so.

The girls have never been treated as being weaker because of their gender on the show and this episode shows them not only complaining about a fictional problem but also as criminals.

Something else that annoyed me is that Jean got angry at Scott for saving her and Amara from a boulder even though he did that because they needed help not because Scott thinks they can never handle themselves.

My take is:

• Peter and MJ go there for some couple time

• Peter wants to go to the arcade but MJ Wants him to stay and put sunscreen on her

• Peter is paranoid that Sandman of Hydro Man will attack and MJ thinks it’s cute and tries to call him down

• MJ reads her book and sunbathes while Peter gets her a drink, ice cream and rubs her feet

• some guys leer at MJ and Peter glares at them to scare them off

• MJ goes swimming and Peter tires to sneak off to the arcade but MJ has him guard their stuff

• MJ goes back to sunbathing and a crab punches her toe

• Peter pulls the crab off and throws it away and asks MJ if she’s ok. She’s a bit teary and says no so Peter gives her a hug

• Peter gets them both ice cream and they cuddle

• it gets dark and they prepare to go but MJ says they can go to the arcade now and they play Street Fighter together and Peter kicks MJ’s butt much to her chagrin

I’ll explain.

I was staying with my aunt Natalie and her boyfriend and we had a little auntie and nephew time where she took me to McDonald’s and then to the old Forbidden Planet in Glasgow where she got me The Dark Phoenix Saga and Astonishing X-Men vol 1.

She dropped me off at my grandparents where she was living at (they were on holiday at the time so it was just me, her and her boyfriend Adrian) where her Adrian was and put him in charge of looking after mew hole she went to her friend’s birthday but she said she’d be home before 10 to put me to bed.

She left but not before kissing Adrian and giving me a bigger kiss and a hug.
Adrian was a decent guy if a bit of a goof who made an effort to talk to me and I told him about this scary clown movie I was interested in which was IT with Tim Curry and as it happened aunt Natalie had the dvd in the house and he put it on for me which was a big mistake for 6 year old me.

We finished part 1 but my 6 year old mind was spooked and Adrian noticed so he put on Cartoon Network to clam me down but unfortunately I’m what was playing was the episode of Ben 10 with Zombozzo the evil clown so he switched it the news. Adrian knew aunt Natalie would kill him if she found out so he gave me £10 to keep my moth shut and apologised for getting me scared.

Aunt Natalie came home and asked how we were and we both said we were fine. Aunt Natalie then put me to bed and gave me a kiss and a cuddle goodnight.

I did fall asleep but I had a nightmare about Pennywise and Zombozzo coming to get time and my omnitrix in the dream wasn’t working and just when they got me I woke up and ran into aunt Natalie’s bedroom and she asked “honey what’s the matter” she sounded a bit annoyed but also concerned and I told her I had a nightmare and asked if I could sleep in her bed and she said “of course sweetie” and let me in and gave me a cuddle which allowed me to fall asleep. Even though the nightmare was pretty bad and felt real aunt Natalie’s cuddle made me feel safe and that no scary clown could get me.

For those curious the next morning she made breakfast and noticed the IT dvd case in the living room and put 2 and 2 together and was pissed at Adrian so she took a waffle from his plate and gave it to me then spent breakfast cuddling me on the couch and asking if I was ok while she put on cartoons for me with a much more lighthearted episode of Ben 10 on.

I think this story is wholesome not only because of the hug making me feel safe but also because she chose to have a little day out with her nephew, but me a couple graphic novels when she only had money from working part time at Dennistoun’s Blockbuster and cut her time at her friend’s birthday short so she could put me to bed
