Which of you brave souls stayed up to watch the game and then went to school then?

Would love to know how you dealt with Year 8 period 1 on 2 hours sleep 😆

This book was such a great beach read. For fans of The Guest, Yellowface, Yesteryear, etc. An obsessive and unlikeable narrator who gets progressively more psychotic. Such a stressful experience but was impossible to put down!

How would you feel about a USA season? Maine to Alaska?

Zigzagging through the US, could be interesting for a country so reliant on aviation. Buses and hitchhiking it is…

The flight from Augusta to Juneau is only around £700 which makes it more challenging given how expensive things are in the US!

Absolutely loved Pizza Girl! Only 192 pages, but a surprisingly tragic story of teenage disappointment, grief, addiction and obsession.

I really felt for the protagonist, she was so sad. She was also very weird. Perfect for this sub!

I devoured “A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers” by Xiaolu Guo. Such a unique and heartfelt novel.

In the early-noughties, Z moves to London from Beijing to study English for a year. The novel details her falling in love, learning a new language and growing up. It’s a coming of age story, a romance story, an immigrant story all in one.

The writing starts in a broken English style, but you see how her English improves overtime by the way the writing changes. I learnt so much about Chinese culture and it was hard to let her go.

I may be biased as a Londoner, but I loved seeing the city through Z’s eyes. Her observations were so astute and witty.

I’m a big fan of Guo’s writing generally - Tweny Fragments of a Ravenous Youth was fantastic, as was her article in The Guardian about moving to Hastings.

Lifting Off by Karen McLeod: a compelling, witty and extremely readable memoir of life as British Airways cabin crew. Told from the perspective of a confused 20-something, struggling with her queerness and alcohol abuse.

Loved this so much! Karen writes deftly about her dysfunctional family dynamics, her stifled creativity, her addiction issues and her struggles with having to closet herself whilst working for the airline. The story takes place across many exotic locales, but her journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance is what makes this a real page turner.

Observations from Season 2

I’m only 2 episodes into season 2 (Mexico to Argentina). I’ve only seen seasons 1 and 6.

It’s super interesting how different the tone at the start is compared to seasons 1 and 6 where they started in Europe. I think starting in the deep end made them quite tense from the get go! Definitely feels harder for them.

A gripe - they know (if they’re not stupid) that Spanish will be spoken pretty much the whole way. Why not pick up a phrase book in Mexico City?! Would have made such a difference!

I’m finding the teams a bit less likeable than seasons 1 and 6, but I think that’s just because they’re starting off from such a heightened point of stress.

Finally, Mike losing £1000… no words. I wonder if it was stolen. You do have to look over your shoulder in Latin America more so than the teams in season 1 and 6 would have had to going through Asia.
